it was during Ray Steadman-Allen's time at a music school in Bolney Court near Brighton in 1960/61 that the march Southdown was composed. The close proximity to the downs in the southern county of Sussex gave rise to the compositions title and this piece represents music of a simpler nature of this imaginative and ground-breaking composer.

Brings back a memory or two! Played this at East Midlands Divisional music school, 1963. Michael Kenyon conducting.

Many years ago the now defunct Corps at Halifax UK had an outstanding YP Band which travelled far and wide. The Band Leader enlisted me as the band's spiritual leader which meant that I also played alongside the youngsters. A particularly memorable visit was as far as Winton on the south coast. As it was a bank holiday weekend it ended with a Monday evening festival chaired by none other than Eric Ball. The programme concluded with the South Down march which the Band Leader invited Eric to conduct. He graciously did so and was very complimentary. What a wonderful memory!

good playing but......... :-( pity that they make a transcription of this great brass band march for windband.

That's a sad comment to make. Why not want to share the best SA compositions with the concert band world? I think this is fantastic! And a great way for the concert band world to even find out about SA banding heritage.
