This mans joy on the drums is so contagious. I couldn't help but smile watching the video. And while he looks like he's just goofing around he absolutely nails it. Marco is such a legend.
But anyway, what made Mike Mangini stand out over the other drummers was the fact that he really wanted to be in DT, he really needed it and desired it. Marco is a phenomenal palyer, and I'd bet he was the most refreshing and surprising for the band, but this gig wasn't only about technique, but also about chemistry and commitement.
Actually Mike Portnoy and Mike Mangini were good friends and i think they had an agreement back then about it. But yeah Minemann is a beast he is the top 2 on the audition list.
@@diegomazzaron9191 They were, and still are as far as I know. You can find a clip here on RU-vid of Mangini joining Portnoy onstage once at a DT show and jamming on one half of Portnoy's Siamese Monster kit.
I think marco deserves the spot bc portnoy was not only a drummer he was a frontman. And marco gives better vibe on that i think. Plus i think his drumming was closer to portnoys style
APPARENTLY he was their first choice, but he only knew 3 songs and had a lack of interest in their material song-wise. Either way, this guy is a legend in my book. Plays with so much feel and loves what he does
KamikazeDoom64 on an interview he said that he didnt even knew the dt guys which looks really impossible. i like him because he worked with paul gilbert and aristocrats but i think he wouldn't do good for dt not because of his technicalities but because he's too much proud of his skills.
agree, i think Marco is not fit to be in DT anyways his taste of music is just different, mangini is the perfect fit for DT, but marco i like his style alot
I reckon Marco was the last chance to save DT, he woulda injected their sound with a fresh energy. Instead we've just had years of tedious soulless technical noodling and weak songwriting.
He was the winner of DT's auditions, but he refused the offer. This guy is the equivalent of Rudess on the keyboard...they are wizards. And btw, JR and Marco are very good friends, Marco didn't want to join the auditions but the wizard conviced him.
@@Ash_HudsonIn the highlights auditions video someone said that Marco was asked for exclusivity with the band meaning he couldn’t do any of his clinics and side projects so he declined.
@@hertechprep hence forth why Portnoy chose to move on and subsequently get involved with countless musical projects since departure. The band and management has bent on this since Mangini arrived, but lowing Portnoy and not receiving Marco were both hindsight MISTAKES.
In fact, there are some rumours that Marco actually did got the gig, but he refused to play in DT due to some issues in the contract that prevented him from being in other side projects and such. The band has never confirmed it, of course, but Marco claims this to be true.
He played it like its a piece of cake for him. Incredible!! After hearing most interviews, no one really like to audition for DT except Mangini. They were invited to look like they wanted to audition. Seems like an american idol thing
i've been learning this song and realize now how many parts he actually played differently. and i wouldn't change any of it. i've watched this SO many times over the last decade, this was the vid that made me a big fan of marco's
Every drummer that tried out is amazing and world-class in their own right. Personally, I'm partial to Donati - the guys is simply amazing. His technique is jaw-dropping, especially his stuff with PX. Marco is awesome too though of course. He's a perfect fit with Gilbert :D They are both musical geniuses and always seem to have tons of fun playing.
I love watching Marco play. He has such joy and makes everything look so effortless. Honestly, he makes like as easy as playing a simple blues tune. He is incredible. Thanks for posting!
Marco It was amazing to see you try out for Theater...and i was hoping to see you go all the way with them, But Mike came to the table with a whole new level of love for the band and the guys of DT...no matter where you go in the world your a drum hero for sure!!! MAD PROPS TO MARCO
no one has ever brought that much sexyness to "The Dance Of Eternity". Love from Geemany. Machste wunderbar, Marco!
"doesn't take music too seriously and is just having fun." are you serious? In his genre, Minnemann is one of the best at what he does. You don't get to that level of playing without taking music seriously. "The Dance of Eternity" is a complex piece. Musicians who aren't serious about what they do can't play complex music. Having a good time while playing your instrument doesn't mean 'you're not taking it seriously', he's simply got a positive mental approach to playing.
Although Marco is my favorite drummer (by a long shot) that Dream Theater auditioned, I do believe they made the right choice in Mangini. He's just a better fit because of the ensemble nature of DT. Minnemann would overpower the other members with his playing, energy, and showmanship. I would love to have seen what he would have done creatively through the writing process though. I think he could have brought new energy with a jazz/funk fusion.
He is really good but he even said himself that he didnt know much about DT and didnt even have any of their records. Mangini was crying when he heard he made it. He is very good also so i have no problem
Portnoy wrote the original one, it wasn't an interpretation. He is one of the original arrangers and composers for it. But yes Marco's interpretation is amazing.
Can't believe they didn't pick him. Mangini is a tech monster but Minneman has the 'feel'. I'm kind of glad it worked out the way it did though, Minneman probably has way more fun playing with Satriani than he would with DT.
Minneman is just as good, if not better then Mangini. However, Mangini was a better pick because he played all the Portnoy parts exactly how they were played.
It has NOTHING to do with his playing, Marco is just not a good fit. He even said he just did it for fun as he had never even heard DT until Jordan called him.
What I like about this guy is that he really seems to enjoy playing the songs on drums. He's having fun and playing awesome stuff. And that's why I hoped he would have been the next DT drummer instead of Magnini. Marco clearly doesn't take music too seriously and is just having fun. And IMO music should be about having a good time. I'm not saying Magnini was a bad choice but I would have preferred Marco.
I TOTALLY LOVE HIM!!!!!!!! He could play all DT-stuff with absolute effortlessness!! There is simply no better drummer on this planet! Not only technically! You can see this love for music in every stroke! He does´nt play just beats and rhythms... he makes MUSIC with the drums! Way too good for DT (and I am a fan of DT)!
Imagine if both were picked, like they both traveled with DT on the 2011-2012 tour, but each played, say, every other concert. Like one gig it's Mangini, the other is Minneman (did I spell that right?), and maybe every 5th concert they'd do a duet. (Mangini, Marco, Mangini, Marco, Both, and then it would repeat)
