"what Marco did today was bad for me but extraordinary for cycling" Jan Ullrich said at the end of the legendary galibier stage of the tour 98. When he literally saved a tour that risked not even arriving in Paris due to continuous doping scandals during that edition. Jean Marie LeBlanc thanked him no longer inviting him from 2001 onwards. Here it is. This can be enough to tell what Marco's life was. The most exciting sportsman I've ever seen. one too special to feel good in this world.

This stage was my most favourite memory of watching cycling since about 1993. Marco just incredible. Thank you.

I remember watching this during my first year of road cycling. I had finally found a sport where a man as physically small, but determind as myself could make a larger man cry, leaving him far behind.

I was on the final hairpin corner, just over a kilometer from the finish line. Got soaked and cold waiting in the rain, but forgot all that when the race eventually arrived; because of the weather the usual TV helicopters weren't flying, so the roar of the crowd following the riders, like a wave, rolling up the road was even more noticable than normal. Pantani was going so fast that I couldn't photograph him, but I got a good one of Ullrich with Riis and Bölts, looking wasted.

I don't think so, I like Pantani but he'll be remembered by many for being right at the spearhead of doping. This performance alone has been well documented for the massive amount of EPO found in frozen urine samples. The fluctuations in his hematocrit over the years '94-'99 are huge. He'd have been average in the pro peloton without the drug.

@@ad9898 Yeah but everyone was doping back then, and he was the best of the dopers. So it still means something.

@NestorMakhno17 it´s not true!! Because Bahamontes won the Tour at 1959 and he was a pure grimpeur! Another great grimpeur was Fuente, "el Tarangu", comparable with Marco obviously. I invite us to see " le Tre cime di Lavaredo, at 1974" and see this incredible show
@blostier
@blostier 7 лет назад
bryangrimpeur ??? I didn't wrote that Pantani has been the only pure grimpeur to win the Tour. Probably the best but I remember not Bahamontes only but Charly Gaul (perhaps in the 1956) and Lucien Van Impe (1973). Furente has NOT won the Tour ! And ne er the Giro too...

When people say they were cheating by taking E,P,O It's only cheating if no other riders and rivals etc aren't taking and doing it too !! So ye Not cheating on anyone! You are just MAKING THE RACE EVEN AND EQUAL ! AS I say you can't cheat ye rivals If you are doing the same as them ! And Only cheat them If They Aren't !!

What happened to Bobby Jullich ? Shouldn't he have been "the" American to win the TDF ?
@Prometheus4096
@Prometheus4096 13 лет назад
@oldtwins They didn't dare to use as much EPO after 1998. Many probably didn't have access to the alternative doping some like Armstrong had. Not that Jullich was clean in 2000, but such a performance drop is to be expected.

Yes no EPO but there's the option of blood doping and merely sleeping in a hyperbaric chamber can give the same effect as EPO. This is almost impossible to detect. Tho we must accept that a trained athlete will have higher hematocrit levels than an untrained person and that thre are variations naturally. So a rider may have a naturally higher level of hematocrit or testosterone.

Pantani was never found positive, he was trapped in 1999, but he had no evidence to plot back, he lived the further 5 years in Humiliation due that he started to take drugs before the Mona Di Campiglio he was completely clean rider, you have to see his documentary - Pantani - Accidental death of a cyclist
