0:58 - Commit to the bass line and 1:41 - basically saying don't do a fill if you can't get back to the beat safely. These are two very good points from Marcus and rules that I'm so guilty of breaking all the time! Words from the master must be heeded!

Commit... but also know when he did change it... right before redundancy... yes, he could've kept going, but around 16 bars, if nothing else is going on, doesnt have to be much more than a tap, could be more space...

Great contrast between two styles of players that play two different types of strings. Michael is primarily a fingerstyle player playing flatwounds and Marcus is primarily a slap player playing roundwounds. Love and appreciate both!

Marcus was a sideman from the late 70s to the early 90s appearing on over 500 albums ...hes a extremely well balanced bass player...yes his preference is slap but he plays whatever the situation requires ..his finger style is just as distinctive as his slapping

I love how Michael naturally did a fill on 1 even though Marcus (lightly) called him out on it. But we all know that that's totally a Michael League-ism and it's SOOOOO good! Later on Marcus wanted him to do it again. Everything about this is so awesome. I'm learning a lot from it.

Inspiring to hear the last bit about commiting to a sound. I often find myself wanting to change my sound because I get inspired by very different styles of music. "I need a new bass because I can't get that sound with the one I already have. I need different strings because I can't get the sound I want with my ultradead flatwounds." Deep down I know where my heart really lies and what sound I consider to be my own, and I'm starting to realize that I need to commit to it.

I only just discovered "Snarky Puppy" two weeks ago, [no shit] & was reveling at how they sounded like the music I used to listen to and had no trouble finding ... in the 70s that is. Mr. Miller is as funky as usual and very generous. His guidance and advice are so on point. This video was like going to school. thank you. btw: I can't believe people are TALKING during this in the audience, they should all go home and stand in the corner for an hour & think about their awful behavior... learn some respect& if this sort of performance is not your thing, don't go, leave the seat for people who care.
@tonartification
@tonartification 5 лет назад
... yes, indeed the noisy talking coming from audience is pretty loud. The truth is that the stage was outdoor with a bar located nearby. The second truth is that especially dutch people are loud in public anyway ...

What Marcus Miller says from 7:00 on regarding 'commiting to one instrument' ist the ABSOLUTE, PLAIN TRUTH! Even with some great players, whenever they change guitars often I always feel that it sounds worse than what their main instrument does. Of course, 'speciality' guitars like 12-strings, baritones, etc have their place but I see those as tools. Think of it: Hendrix, SRV, Gilmour had their Strats. Some guys like Clapton and Beck changed their weapon of choice over the years but they would commit then and stay with Strats fro a long time. That's even true of studio players, like Larry Carlton and his ES-335, James Burton and more recently Brent Mason with their Telecasters. Those guys covered a wide variety of music. Great video BTW, both guys are absolute badass musicians.

I like Marcus's statement about commitment to one instrument. Im always seeing bassist online with 20 diffrent basses but to tell the truth there is very little diffrence in the sound from one bass to another generally. Commitment to one instrument can force a player to get all the sounds he or she wants with just practice. Marcus gets plenty of sounds from his jazz bass and he usually only has maybe 2 or 3 basses at his concerts but sticks primarily to one instrument. So does Jeff Berlin and Jaco and Stanley Clarke and Victor Wooten.
