Margot Fonteyn: The Ballerina

Growing up, training and loving ballet, Dame Margot Fonteyn became my angel, the one I looked up to. She didn't have the best feet, or arabesque, and certainly, by todays more rigged standards, she wasn't a "Balanchine" sort of body. But she had so much more. Totally intangible and totally real. Many have come into ballet and many have left, but Fonteyn left her mark forever. The Ballernia.
To the memory of Fonteyn. WIth all my heart and love.

The one and only, our divine dream girl ! Would she had known as much happiness as she gave to others; I hope she realised her art and her beauty were absolute and eternal...

for you Twinkler a friend sent me this about Margot and I met her twice! Only for autographs but she was very sweet. "Something beautiful about understated simplicity that makes you want more."

Having just watched this again, and all the wonderful performances of Fonteyn, what a glorious tribute to her art this is, and a labour of love!

I do have to say that in my opinion I think she had the most beautiful arabesque of any dancer. Her extension is not as high as todays gymnasts but the line was total purity. She has a luminescence about her and a womanliness that I have seen in no other dancer.

RozRuss I couldn't agree with you more! I've seen many ballets and ballerinas, she is the ONE. No frills, just the dance. Who cares how high one can lift a leg? Her quiet style transcends all others. To me, the most elegant ballerina who ever danced. Have you seen all the documentaries and books on her life? A very tragic end to a spectacular career! Thanks for posting.

What a super description-"no frills, just the dance!" She always said get out get on with it don't linger! so many today make such hard work of dance. Adding to many frills and so overdoing the effect. And she was a WOMAN dancing!

I'm sure she could lift her legs higher, this is the line we were taught at nyc ballet in the 80's . We were often told to bring our legs down. I think it's a bit vulgar when today the legs go so high and their skirts are in the air

Yes, that's the one! Very interesting but very hard to watch nearer the end. I think I've seen bits of the one you mean, "A Perfect Partnership" online. And very true, too. As for her and Rudy's being together, it would have been good for her in many ways I'm sure. But she just had this issue with choosing the worst people to be with, and that's awfully sad. Still, whatever her and Rudy had, it was pure magic and they gave each other the best of each other. Cheers and thank you again!

Pas de bouree-a progression of very small steps-here we see that definition-incredidble-the control it must take!

Thank you very much for watching and for your kind comment! Can't add more to what you said. Totally right. Although I do know what you mean about her personal life. I read much on her but I did manage to see a doctumentary only a couple months ago, "Magot" done in 2005. It was that that made me do this tribute to her.

Is that the one by Tony Palmer? If it is, I do own that one. There's another one with Rudy called 'A Perfect Partnership.' I enjoyed that one also. They were quite the pair weren't they? Too bad they didn't marry ( I know there was an inherent problem) but anything would have been better than Tito. What a creep! But she remained devoted to him until the end. It shows what a tremendous sense of duty she had. Thanks again and keep up the good work.
