For the first time in Glorious DES STEREO Maria Callas Covent Garden Concert from November 4, 1962 Conductor Georges Pretre & Act 11 of Tosca with Tito Gobbi & Renato Cioni. February 2, 1964 Conducted by Carlo Felice Cillario
The top voice coach in Chicago said it was worth the price of a ticket just to see Callas walk on to the stage. She was right. Who could stand there silent for five minutes and keep the audience enthralled on the edge of their seats? She was unprecedented, unique and so far unequaled. RIP La Divina.
It’s known that she believe in the musical context of every aria. That’s why she’s have these forever long introductions before started singing. This demonstrates that more than a singer or an outstanding actress whose magnificent presence filled the stage, she was a musician who understood the importance of introducing the audience and herself as performer, to the magic of every piece.
exactly. she dominates space and time and music, she embodies any aria with perfection inside herself. Total Acting. another level, ...in full regality of Voice and Persona
I as a child in 1964 i got to sing with Maria Callas in Tosca Covent Garden Opera House, what an honour, and got to see Franco Zeffirelli many times during rehearsals and during the show.
Unsurpassable unique exquisite- she doesn’t act the role- she IS the role. Those who criticise her voice have hearts of Formica. Bless you Callas for how much of yourself you gave us.
I have written many comments about this unic artist. Maria Callas was the greatest actor and soprano in the world and will be that for ever! Written by a musician that love singing and singers in Opera.
Gosh ur almost holding ur breath till she sings the first notes n I liked how when the applause started how she was smiling n acknowledged each section of the theater with her eyes just lovely
Elmira I am so inspired that there are still persons on this planet who have retained the depth of comprehension of beauty art and the great drama of human travails and of course its duality with tragedy
If there are kindred spirits out there like this correspondent we should communicate by e mail to sustain friendships and even eventually possibly personal contacts. The world is a bleak place if we relationships are not shared with a spirit of love and virtue so let’s us begin
I only come across this amazing lady recently just by ancient wlow what a gift she left the world just beautiful soul even her life was so sad but had so much to given in her voice god blessed you
42:10 - 42:33 is the single greatest moment of Tosca for me. It isn’t to perform, but to live a real performance. Tito and Maria, the best Tosca to this day!
A great actress who does not overact with histrionics like Bartoli and her her ilk and who does not use her bodice as an enticement and whose precise range of vocals and timbre are unmatched
I watch this and marvel. Scarpia stretches out Tosca's arm before him, such malevolence. The great Gobbi and Callas. It doesn't matter that I have the 1953 soundtrack in the back of my mind (except for 54.20-56.42, which is for the ages). It doesn't matter that the Medea film failed to capture Callas. Thank you for posting this great piece of sung theater.
I don’t think you quite grasp the meaning of that word or it’s understanding… There are, in fact, many of them… Do you want me to name them? Or shall I just let you continue with your baseless suspicion and lack on understanding! Because that’s what your word shows! Ignorance and a refusal to believe somebody else’s word for it…
