Maria Callas:
Weight loss
In the early years of her career, Callas was a heavy and full-figured woman, though she admitted to weighing "no more than 200 pounds."[13] Despite her figure, Meneghini and others considered her beautiful, but during her initial performances in Cherubini's Medea in May 1953, Callas decided that she needed a leaner face and figure to do dramatic justice to this as well as the other roles she was undertaking:
I was getting so heavy that even my vocalizing was getting heavy. I was tiring myself, I was perspiring too much, and I was really working too hard. And I wasn't really well, as in health; I couldn't move freely. And then I was tired of playing a game, for instance playing this beautiful young woman, and I was heavy and uncomfortable to move around. In any case, it was uncomfortable and I didn't like it. So I felt now if I'm going to do things right-I've studied all my life to put things right musically, so why don't I diet and put myself into a certain condition where I'm presentable.[13]
During 1953 and early 1954, she lost almost 80 pounds (36 kg), turning herself into what Maestro Rescigno called "possibly the most beautiful lady on the stage".[11] Sir Rudolf Bing, who remembered Callas as being "monstrously fat" in 1951, stated that after the weight loss, Callas was an "astonishing, svelte, striking woman" who "showed none of the signs one usually finds in a fat woman who has lost weight: she looked as though she had been born to that slender and graceful figure, and had always moved with that elegance."[25] Various rumors spread regarding her weight loss method; one had her swallowing a tapeworm, while Rome's Pantanella Mills pasta company claimed she lost weight by eating their "physiologic pasta", prompting Callas to file a lawsuit.[8] Callas stated that she lost the weight by eating a sensible low-calorie diet of mainly salads and chicken.[13] Some believe that the loss of body mass made it more difficult for her to support her voice, triggering the vocal strain that became apparent later in the decade (see vocal decline), while others believed the weight loss effected a newfound softness and femininity in her voice, as well as a greater confidence as a person and performer.[14]
[edit] Voice
Callas's voice was and remains controversial; it bothered and disturbed as many as it thrilled and inspired.[14] Walter Legge stated that Callas possessed that most essential ingredient for a great singer: an instantly recognizable voice.[26] During "The Callas Debate", Italian critic Rodolfo Celletti stated, "The timbre of Callas's voice, considered purely as sound, was essentially ugly... yet I really believe that part of her appeal was precisely due to this fact. Why? because for all its natural lack of varnish, velvet and richness, this voice could acquire such distinctive colours and timbres as to be unforgettable."[27] In compensation for the lack of classical beauty of sound, Callas was able to change the timbre of the voice and her vocal color and weight at will and according to the role she was singing, essentially giving each character her own individual voice.[14][17]
Maestro Carlo Maria Giulini has described the appeal of Callas's voice:
It is very difficult to speak of the voice of Callas. Her voice was a very special instrument. Something happens sometimes with string instruments-violin, viola, cello-where the first moment you listen to the sound of this instrument, the first feeling is a bit strange sometimes. But after just a few minutes, when you get used to, when you become friends with this kind of sound, then the sound becomes a magical quality. This was Callas.[11]

michsturge is 110% correct. Ponselle's recording of this aria is absolute perfection, even with the less than adequate recording techniques of the day. Here we have weak trills at best; then there's the high note spread. Some of this is fine, but some isn't, and anyone who says this is the "standard" is very easy to please indeed. I am not against Callas; I am saying she was not the be all and end all as far as singing goes.

Ponselle? The woman who barely had a stable B flat? Please! That wretched voice was killed within 5 years and she was forced to sing Carmen to avenge her horrid and wretched voice. Callas "10" years easily beats Ponselles. Don't get me started on her having better articulation, trills, coloratura and fioritura, better musicality, and better understanding of the text.
@deadwalke9588

RMPsumma Sure. Come up with a legitimate response to back up your supposed "claims" of Ponselle having the better interpretations. Because unless I'm confused, many sopranos have out sung her in the same repertory (even outside of Callas). Fleming is just one of the singers who sounds and even sings better Ponselle. +LohengrinTH and +Lohengrin O could even attest to this.

Medea most emphatically DOES require Dramatic Coloratura. There are runs up and down a two octave scale, especially in the final act, where Medea turns into a wild savage and decided to kill her children. Also at the end of Act II where, singing against the chorus, she must let go a volley of notes that come on like a machine gun.

Interesting story - - - Rescigno said during the recording of this aria he was suddenly inspired and ripped into the cabaletta at a much faster tempo than had been rehearsed. Callas, startled, looked at him "with those big eyes" and joined in the race for the finish. This is the amazing result. Who cares who:-) else sings it how else - - - let's just enjoy it for the amazing thing it is.

MrYonexguy63 BellovV is right.this is what Rescigno said about Pirata: a machine gun rather than a singer. María looked at me a bit frightened when the passage was coming up and she didn't make it. I told her that next time I would put on the brakes just before her entry."No, don't do that," she answered. "I like the tempo very much; it is valid and I don't want you to help me." "Well," I said what if you don't make it in performance?" That's my business not yours she countered. However out of her fantastic will came this superb, astonishing thing at the performance,all in order!

There are two "gold standard" versions of this aria: this one by Callas. The other one is Rosa Ponselle's. The term 'the Ernani trill" has been referred to for generations of lovers of great singing. No one who listens to Ponselle's cabaletta can forget that trill. Why is there not a discussion of Ponselle here? Also, Sutherland, Moffo, Steber, Sills and several others are worthy contenders in addition to Caballe.
@mmjhcb
@mmjhcb 6 лет назад
pkunzip501 Haven't you noticed? The great Rosa Ponselle is usually bashed (when mentioned at all) in Callas threads -- as if she presents some threat to Callas (and she does, of course). Ponselle's version is THE GOLD STANDARD for this aria. Period. End of story. And the Ponselle trills? Unmatched. Lastly, the final Callas note here is NOT what I'd want to leave the audience with, but criticizing Callas in ANYTHING prompts only vitriol and loathing from her cultists.
@wilsonwatt9283
@wilsonwatt9283 5 лет назад
There is no discussion because people wish to comment on how Callas is singing this aria. There is no need to discuss other singers although a proper analysis of anyone's singing must include such comparisons; however, this is a fan site not a music school site and fans of almost any singer like to talk about their singers not others. Interestingly, Callas would probably agree with you on "where is Ponselle" as Callas stated that Ponselle was the greatest.
@shaundudley4576
@shaundudley4576 4 года назад
@@mmjhcbNonsense. Ponselle is worshipped by Callas lovers. It would be a betrayal of Callas to disparage Rosa as she herself held her in the highest regard. This is a late recording and of course cannot be compared to the peerless Ponselle. Except as an example of the Callas Stylistic Musical and dramatic genius and her superhuman ability to do more with her worn instrument than any including Ponselle could with even the best.

I agree that she handles it pretty decently. It's a very competent role for her, without the excitement and virtuoso lure of Callas's. Medea is such a heavy, heavy role. Has to have consistent weight in the vocal line, as well as some lyricism, growling chest tones etc. The dramatic coloratura is there, particularly in the final scene. It's not as complex as Rossini or Bellini coloratura, but it requires an heroic voice with agility, like all Assoluta roles.

For me, even though she was a leggero coloratura, Ms Sills outshines even this performance by Ms Callas. Ms Sills' agility, her trills, the caballetta at the end are just perfection on the recording she made. Here Ms Callas was rather sloppy in the agility department and her top notes were strident and close to a scream quality. If you have heard her early recordings, pre '53 more or less and then compare this with those, there is no comparison!

Yes of course! Dramatically it's as lacking as every other attempt at this role. But vocally, Deutekom is the only woman who could manage the legato, and the only soprano who did not humiliate herself singing Medea. (Apart from Callas, of course; as always, it goes without saying that she is supreme.) I agree that the role demands ferocity throughout the 2+ octave range (I think it's Bb3-B5) and heavy authority, but why do you think it requires coloratura?

@@golden-63 It's so sad to see her perform. I was watching a performance of I 'L Trovatore at Coruna Spain. I was so disappoint by her poor vocal skills than later they had a concert with the same very sad outcome.So I asked myself Why is she continues to sing at such low level at the Met she was in Rossinis Semaramide & it was so bad I could not watch anymore. Ponselle's relegates this Callas version to the back burner. Ponselle's singing in general (and certainly of this aria) puts her in a class all alone. While comparisons are sometimes odious, in this case, there is no comparison.

Astonishing how many experts in singing technique live on utube ,all waving the technique flag ,all avoiding like the plague to explain what they actually understand under the word "technique" .I have a sinking feeling they have no idea what they're talking about and just use it to give "weight" to their opinions ,which aren't even opinions ,just preferences and name dropping of their fav singers ,with or without use of CAPS ,exclamation marks ,emojis ,and the rest of the attention-seeking arsenal of the common utube-dweller . The more sophisticated variety than our worthy Tim here usually throws in terms like "portamento" , "scooping" , "intonation" , "breath control" ,"placement" and the like ,without having the fuzziest ,bless them. Always a source of merriment to me . Tim ,wouldn't you oblige me with an offering? Pretty please?

Quite the contrary , you realize the greatness of Callas knowing that she followed the magnificent Ponselle and created operatic history as did her predecessor . Why are we running our beloved singers against each other when we know so well that each of them gave their whole lives , hearts , beauty to the art form we love , the art of singing. Have you not seen the photograph of Callas with Ponselle ? the awe she felt was very evident . Thank God for these treasures of our lives , how we miss them . There is no way you can overrate an artist such as Maria Callas , she is what she is , stupendous and incomparable , just as was Ponselle , Pons , Melba , Galli-Curci , and in more recent times Steber, Price , Sutherland and Sills .

Sutherland's 1961 version is even greater than this. With it's vocal coloring, stunning coloratura, an actual trill (as opposed to whatever Callas did here) and sung in a much more beautiful voice, it's never been equalled.
