L’altro giorno mi hanno detto che sono un vecchio melomane nostalgico e che bisogna guardare avanti e non ascoltare le vecchie registrazioni di cantanti “vecchi”. Io guardo in avanti e sento il nulla, vedo coreografie oscene, cantati che sanno cantare solo con microfoni, cantanti che non sanno cantare e pensano di essere degli Dei. Quindi se questo è il presente ed il futuro, GRAZIE Maria per essere esistita ed aver lasciato a noi Vecchi Melomani le tue registrazioni e continueremo a bearci della tua voce sino all’ultimo nostro giorno. Lady Macbeth rediviva, è lei!!!! E lo strumento straordinario... ogni volta che l'ascolto gelo, fremo, mi stupisco, piango. Un ventaglio di emozioni ad ogni nota, quel fraseggio sempre azzeccato e originale, originale come le potenze della sua immensa voce. Magistrale. Le asfalta tutte. E' la Dea della musica.
The genius of this voice renders me incapable of comment of any kind... For many decades I am faced with incredulity that a human could produce a voice as shockingly stupendous as this..... this lady was touched by the Gods, that is all I can say.

Possiamo passare in rassegna ogni nota e disquisirne la bellezza e divertirci a trovarne i difetti e a fare paragoni con altre grandi soprano ma la Callas è un universo a sé. È la Divina non solo come tecnica, interpretazione, forza, ecc.. ma è la Divina perché ad ogni ascolto provoca emozioni che nessun altra (talvolta anche con voci più belle) arriva a generare. Non esistono parole. Basta ascoltarla in quasi tutti i ruoli, almeno fino al 1955-57 e non serve altro. I soprani di oggi sono lontane anni luce dalla Divina. In Macbeth poi, tolta in parte la Verret, non ha avuto rivali. La Netrebko, per esempio, dovrebbe addirittura smettere di interpretarlo, altro che prima alla Scala. Da 50 anni mi beo nell'ascolto della Divina, regalo materiale all'Umanità. RIP Maria
Une performance vocale surhumaine .On comprend ici pourquoi Callas est digne de sa légende . Techniquement il y a tout ,notes de poitrine ,vocalises , trilles ,aigus et suraigus , projection du son, autorité de la déclamation et aussi incarnation insensée du personnage .Personne ,personne ,personne depuis Callas ne peut rivaliser .Je pense la même chose du rôle d'Amina dans la Somnambulla : inégalable !
I've read that while she was in conservatory she would audit as many other voice lessons as she could. She said there was something to learn from each singer regardless of their natural talent.

Asombrosa intensidad y despligue de recursos vocales increibles.. Alguna otra soprano ha podido llegar a tal nivel? Intenso dramatismo logrado a plenitud. Única e irrepetible. Pasma y deja estupefactos a los espectadores y a los que la oimos en grabaciones como esta.

Callas es un fenómeno irrepetible, modernizó la manera de interpretar ópera, realmente es el personaje artístico más influyente en el mundo lírico y un personaje conocido fuera de ese contexto. Aquí da cátedra de belcanto y nadie la ha superado en el rol de Lady Macbeth. Callas eterna.
Aquí esta en plenas facultades vocales 29 años la gran Callas. La intensidad vocal, la explosión vocal en todos los registros y esa electricidad que solo ella tiene y transmite en su voz, la mejor Lady de todas en esta grabación de juventud.
This is an amazing performance. The only other performances I enjoy are verrett and gencer although this is clearly the gold standard. Nobody singing today even remotely approaches this
Qui non è semplicemente una grande cantante: è inumana! La potenza esplosiva degli acuti, la precisione delle colorature e dei trilli, i bassi di petto: un capolavoro dall'inizio alla fine. Pensiamo, ad esempio, alla parte iniziale, quando canta "quel freddo core"; ebbene, quasi tutti i soprani continuano con la voce di testa e praticamente non si sentono: lei no, lei usa una meravigliosa voce di petto e si sente forte e piena fin nelle note più basse. Gli applausi alla fine della cavatina, poi alla fine della cabaletta e poi alla fine di tutto il numero, così fragorosi ed entusiasti, mi fanno commuovere; di certo tutto quell'entusiasmo del pubblico è ampiamente giustificato: è meravigliosa per noi che l'ascoltiamo registrata con le tecniche di quasi 70 anni fa: pensate che cosa sarà stata dal vivo! Sentite la voce di donna che grida "brava" al minuto 20:09 : ecco, pensate che quella signora, se all'epoca aveva solo 22 anni, adesso di anni ne ha 90; probabilmente, però, era più grande, e quindi adesso sarà morta e, se fosse viva, avrebbe 100, 110, 120 o più anni.
Dopo a scorpacciata televisiva del Macbeth inaugurale del 7 dicembre 2021 questa meravigliosa Callas ci risolleva il morale donandoci le emozioni che la voce e l'interpretazione devono trasmettere.Ovviamente non è accaduto con il Macbeth scaligero,almeno per me.
Hanno calpestato il macbeth alla Scala... una lady Macbeth che sembrava una canzonettista... poi grazie al cielo abbiamo le registrazioni della Callas, e le orecchie riprendono vita...
Que grande fue! Que grande es! Antes de escucharla en est grabación, había tenido por muy buena la de Shirley Verret, que es lo mejor que había escuchado. Sigo pensando que la interpretación de la Verret es muy buena y el aplauso que obtuvo, la sorpresa de un público que ya estaba resignado y que descubría que se podia canter bien el aria. Pero delante de esto, todo palidece. Que voz! Que expresión! Que música! Queda uno atontado de asombro y de contento.
Aquella noche fue fantástica. Por fin, se había encontrado la cantante que encarnara a la diabólica Lady Macbeth. Toscanini la buscaba para hacer justicia a las indicaciones del gran Verdi sobre este personaje en concreto, debía o debe escucharse sobrenaturalmente no humano, que evidenciara la maldad. Pero fue el mítico director De Sabata, que encontró esa cantante. Callas que todo lo entendía cantó esa noche tal cual como está en la partitura...recitativo+cabaletta. Extraordinario!!!!
Voici ce qu'a écrit Christophe Capacci à propos de cette Lady Macbeth de Maria Callas saisie à la Scala en 1952 sous la direction de Victor de Sabata. "(…) Qui voudra rencontrer Lady Macbeth devra entendre cette représentation scaligère car si Verdi était désespéré par l'angélisme d'une Tadolini, il faut reconnaître à Maria Callas une rage démoniaque qui, d'emblée, en fait le personnage rêvé par le compositeur. L'incarnation vocale est tout bonnement indescriptible. Comment expliquer cette tenue instrumentale, faite de légèreté, de virtuosité et, en même temps, cette malignité terrible du timbre, de l'émission, du phrasé enfin ? Le miracle de la rencontre avec Victor de Sabata opère dès la première scène dans un andantino incantatoire, dans un maestoso au crescendo sauvage, Maria Callas convoquant les "ministri infernali" dans un mystérieux silence de la voix, puis laissant enfler la transe jusqu'à la strette, impeccable, d'un aplomb renversant. Ensuite, les dialogues avec Macbeth lui donnent l'intuition du sotto voce, du quasi parlato qui glace son Cawdor et fait frémir le public d'une joie cathartique. Évoquons encore ce génie de la voyelle, ce "u" italien que Maria Callas laisse résonner dans "Una macchia è qui tuttora" avec le même désespoir lancinant que dans le "Alfin son tUa" de Lucia. (…) Dans la fosse, c'est un meneur de sabbat qui fouette cette course éperdue vers le pouvoir et nous dévoile à chaque moment les ravages de la folie" (fin de citation). Mon propos personnel : nous ne savons pas si la Lady Macbeth rêvée par Giuseppe Verdi (il a beaucoup écrit à ce sujet, les sources sûres sont éloquentes) a existé avant Maria Callas, d'autant moins que quand elle s'empara du rôle, l'œuvre n'était quasiment plus jouée, mais nous savons que Maria Callas n'a pas (encore) d'héritière dans ce rôle "imprenable", sauf par les armes du génie dont elle était entièrement pourvue, ce qui est autre chose que le talent d’autres cantatrices, serait-il immense. La Lady Macbeth de Maria Callas est anthologique, idéale et insurpassée.

Che meraviglia nel pieno fulgore di una voce unica, che incisività di accenti, che musicalità. Dopo di Lei solo la Verrett si è avvicinata a questo livello.

Mai una volta che c'azzeccasse ..... mi ci mette anche la Tebaldi che il Macbeth non l'aveva manco in repertorio...come altre elencate...
This is superhuman, incandescent singing. She only sang Lady Macbeth in this Scala production in December 1952 at the age of just 29. She cancelled the scheduled 1957 San Fransisco performances, pleading illness after the exhausting Edinburgh Sonnambulas, and was famously fired by Rudolf Bing from the 1959 Met production. So this is a very precious document indeed. My only peeve is that the Sleepwalking Scene is conducted way too fast (Victor de Sabata I believe) and Maria sounds rather rushed, although she very cleverly saves the high D-flat from sounding like a scream.
Sometimes I feel almost scared listening to Callas sing this music. Based on everything I've read about this role, including words from Verdi himself, Callas comes the closest to embodying Lady MacBeth. In his book, Meneghini talks about listening to Callas singing the music from MacBeth with Toscanini at the piano, which made him feel uneasy, uncomfortable, even disturbed. There was supposed to be a production of MacBeth with Callas and Toscanini, but for some reason it never came to fruition. Other sopranos have tackled this role and are able to perform it, which is certainly an accomplishment. No one, however, has come even close to Callas' ability to embody this or any other role for that matter.
Verdi pide al principio de La luce langue una voz sombría pero ligada, exactamente como hace la Callas siguiendo obedientemente todos los arcos de legato, y luego, a partir de 10:35, pide una voz en pianísimo un poco oscilante..., y Callas podía hacerlo exactamente así. Es muy interesante escucharla con las partituras, porque es la manera de ver, al margen de la forma como ella enfrentaba estos papeles, añadiendo algunos temibles fortepianos expresivos, que cantaba las partituras obedeciendo además a todas las indicaciones.
I think it still would’ve been a great role for her. But there’s evidence that she and Meneghini manufactured that controversy so that she could do a highly lucrative concert tour instead. See Michael Scott’s book.
Thank you. How exciting, if one didn't have to hear the debilitating stress on the voice. My vocal folds become tired just listening to her. She is a study on everything that a singer should NOT do. But, she is not boring. I appreciate these recordings from you.
I think her chords never gave out, as has been written, but every new role chipped away at her ability to sustain such physical, emotional, artistic and vocal force at an even more intense level than in the roles before. She gave as much power to her work as a pride of lions, and then . . . There was just no more to give!

But, I think most of the time people look at her "giving" and don't include a really important fact for the Olympic skill of operatic singing; she simply did not know how to use her instrument; she consistently, also, let her ego dictate roles she never should have sung. To "get through" a role doesn't mean it has been sung well. There was a time when I wanted to hear recordings before 1956. When I heard those I was shocked at the fact that the voice was, even then, pushed, worn, tattered, as if she sang on guts and desire with no skill in the art of singing. I understand why many love her. I do. Hearing her makes me cringe. I hear what is happening, and I cringe; I cannot take it. I think it says much for her that I do try over and over to see if I missed something. She was a phenomenon, if only that.
@@Mimi-ey5ej OH, and yes, her vocal cords or folds gave out pretty much by '57. But, they were tattered long before that. I believe she actually sang Turandot in '49. I would love to hear how she sounded before that.
Perhaps your cords become tired listening to great singing because you are not a great singer. This is nearly technically flawless…to hear this and say she didn’t know what she was doing…What a laugh 😂
