Great match, and finally a three setter since 2001 ! Deserved victory for Sharapova who simply was the most offensive player by far, willing to make more mistakes but never going away from her game plan in order to actually take and win this match. There were disputable things such as the usual time taken for serving and that 10 minutes break after the 2nd set, but Halep showed class in her press conference about that and it's up to the WTA to change rules if necessary. For the young Romanian, there is still a lot to come for her if she keeps working hard and gets the best of her nerves in big stages. She was too passive and didn't take the ball early enough to trouble Sharapova (who doesn't move that well, but also loves to use angles if you don't take time away from her while you force her to move), and only really appeared to show her agressive play when she had to save break points. - All in all, a fantastic tournament for WTA, with top seeds tested or even ousted by promising players, Sloane Stephens getting another reality check (for her own good), and ultimately both hottest players on clay making it through to the final.

You guys are saying that Maria is overrated? She can still manage to win a GS after her career-threatening shoulder injury! Know what's overrated? When they praised Stephens while she got not GS.. When they pit Bouchard on the pedestal with no GS.. Sharapova, Hingis, Williams, Graf, and a lot more got their first GS while on their teens..

Maria Sharapova is a great champion and she proved it again today. The media hype these young ladies like Halep. Bouchard, Stephens BUT the veterans like Sharapova still dominating women tennis.

I think the biggest thing that improved in Maria's game that has allowed her to excel in clay now is her patience. More than her movement, it's her patience in engaging in those long rallies where she would usually get impatient and try to outhit her opponent for the winner, now she can rally and wait for the right time to strike. That's awesome. She's almost Nadal-like that way, wearing down opponents til they break. Think that's what happened in this final -- Maria won the last 2 games without dropping a point! Credit to her patience, fitness and endurance! Bravo, Maria!

This is awesome, very challenging gameplay from both players till the last ball, each point was a war, and yet people comments about grunting and nonsense stuff. Bravo Maria, you deserve it

Simona had the easier path in and as always Officials craft a tough road into Grand Slam finals for Maria. She relishes in fact takes on the challenge every time and after making stirring comebacks in the 3 previous matches she did as all sports champions do, she dug deep time and time again during this match to win a Dramatic and Memorable final. No other player on tour could have done this. No wonder Mighty Maria was emotional and overjoyed post match.

For me, Simona is the queen of this final! Because now she is nr. 3 în WTA ranking :) And in the future, the people will hear about Simona Halep like it did before, when Nadia Comaneci ruled the world of gymnastics! Ladyes, beware of Simona! She doesnt scream, she just play tenis.

Some comments refer to "grunts". MS doesn't grunt. She shrieks and wails to high heaven, prolonging it into the opponent's stroke. It's meant to disturb the other player and it's interference. WTA does nothing about it because MS is one of their main poster girls..

Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine Sharapova lifting a 2nd Roland Garros title!! With her kryptonite Serena always looming, and other players gradually rising to the occasion, slams have always been rather dubious. But here she stands with 2 slams on her initially worst surface, POST potential career-ending injury, 5 Grand Slams tall. Here's to continually carving her name into history, when she already has more money than she can count. Carry On.

What really pisses me off with these "highlights" that Roland Garros has been uploading throughout the tournament is that there is little to no emotion in them. I don't just want to see a group of random points that ends in the match point. The match point is great, but they even ruin that by cutting the video out before you really get to see the full reaction from the winner. I get no sense that I just got a nice summary of a match I missed live. Why couldn't they, at the very least, show set points as well. I would call those highlights too. If they're going to show match points which can usually not be as dramatic as we all wish they were, they should be able to show set points. This match is a perfect example of when they should've done that. The sets (score-wise at least, I wouldn't know since I couldn't watch it live) seemed very close, and it would've been nice to see reactions towards the end of each set. Unfortunately, all I got was a group of random (albeit nice) shots that ended with the match point and then that was cut out the second Sharapova dropped to her knees... How anti-clamatic. Please get some better editors next year, Roland Garros.

Wonderful match! Great job by Maria! :) Also great job by Simona! :) Simona will be in the top 3 in the WTA rankings for a long time. She seems to be a better version of another very good player, Agnieszka Radwanska. Like Agnieszka, Simona will continue to have her struggles when playing the more powerful players like Maria or Serena. But she will continue to probably stay higher ranked than Maria because she is more consistent in beating the lower players, and I think Simona will be No. 1 when Serena leaves again for a while, or retires.

What a player sharapova used to be. Makes me sad seeing her in bad shape theses days.

I'll almost always root for Sharapova. When you're a kid you pick your favorites and it's hard to go back! There are a few genuinely positive aspects to her court behaviour and personality. Just look at her speech after her Australian Open win - class all around. SOME of the criticism regarding the shrieks etc. is valid but let's not call Maria a cheat... Anyway, with all that said, I've been following Halep for the last six months now and really taken to her too. I felt for Halep so much when she lost... just a really nice, candid girl with an admirable no frills attitude. It felt wrong that she lost today. Maria deserved it but Halep kept fighting until the end. Maybe a bit of variety is all that's missing in her game... She's won a lot of fans - I'd like to think more than just a contingent of tennis fans who can't stand the 6'+ behemoths like Masha, Azarenka etc....

Simona halep is only 22 years...she is the best in her generation, she won all the competition as a junior. In a few years she wont have any oponent,

Sharapova won, the end. People keep saying Halep has potential but in fact THIS was her chance to prove it. Potential means she has what it takes,but is not performing well enough to show it.
