@ThatGreenDayFreak, if I were ever wound up tightly enough to sing that B-flat, two things would happen: 1) I would instantly become constipated and unable to walk, and 2) I'd almost certainly blow a gasket just trying to hit it (so it would definitely not sound pretty at all).
A very meh rendition of this piece. Not sure if this singer was having an off night. He was definitely having issues in several places in this song, as evidenced by his having to take breaths in odd places that threw off the phrasing. He's extremely tense on the high note. Watch his face. You can see his veins bulging. Not to mention that his vibrato starts to slow noticeably while he holds that note. A sign that he didn't properly prepare for it. It's only a B flat. Any professional tenor should be able to hit that note without those kinds of issues. In the end, his voice is so shot that he has to flip to his falsetto to float that pianissimo, but his breath support is so haggard that it doesn't have the ping that it should.
I have just heard Amsel Elgort, who plays Tony in the WSS remake, sing Maria. He leaves out those central repetitions of Maria, they are beyond his voice. Aaron Tveit is an amazing real tenor with strength and sensitivity.
When I saw the recent movie, I loved Rachel Zeglar’s performance, but I found it hard to believe that she would stay with Tony based on Ansel Elgort’s performance. However, if Aaron Tveit played Tony, I would’ve totally understood why she would have wanted to stay with Tony after killing Bernardo 🤣
he was honestly awful. Rachel seemed very alive, but I couldn't feel anything from Ansel, both his acting and singing performances fell flat. Aaron's too old but would be infinitely more magnetic, I'm sure
Huh, I didn't feel that way at all. I think they both performed well. Ansel was a good and sensitive Tony. A bit tall for Rachel maybe, he was towering over her lol
This is the best I've every heard Maria, not only sung, but acted. So connected. So moving. There are not enough adjectives to describe how gorgeous his interpretation is. Just stunning.
Aaron Tveit, a name I'd never heard before Schmigadoon, is a real tenor. Maria is a test for the male voice. And his movement on stage is so effective, rather than standing in place for the entire song. He is a fabulous dancer in the Gene Kelly mode, I've recently discovered.
As a long time fan of Aaron’s (kind of came to know him after Les Miserables and also as a result of his work in Next to Normal), I always find it so interesting to meet folks who have only discovered him recently. Welcome to the fan club, and enjoy the ride. 😂
@@PianoDisneygal10 oh my god same the reason I know him is because of Les Miserables. I didn’t really like Marius but I absolutely love Enjolras (Aaron’s character) ❤❤❤
Jerry Hadley does the best version by an operatic lyrico tenor. Aaron is an artistic... an actor... exquisite in his delivery and he happens to have a beautiful singing voice... started to look at him after watching One Royal Holiday... such talent!
Seems like he was born to play this role. Everything's there. The passion, emotion, the acting, the dynamics, the voice -- and what a voice!! (I've heard him sing about iced coffee & it sounds amazing) I played this over a few times (guilty) and I couldn't pick out one part to "bookmark" or "highlight" above the rest. The whole thing is just incredible, best I've heard. Well done Tveit, well done.
Try this one from West End singer Rob Houchen. His version of Maria is the best I have ever heard. His high notes are stunning m.ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-hS1dYdaGZ10.html
@@gamer5101 Marius has some low notes in his big song ("Seul devant ces tables vides"), but at least he's written with a tenor voice in mind. Now, Tveit has sung the title role in "Sweeney Todd" - and that is serious baritone stuff.
@@crees1445 Joe Gillis requires a somewhat lower voice than that of Tveit, best would be a low tenor like Hugh Jackman or really high baritone (none that comes to my mind). However, recently he has even sung the title role in Sweeney Todd, which is written for a real baritone.
Aaron Tveit is everything. His voice is angelic. To describe how beautiful he sings Maria is beyond words. Just watch it and even play it hundred times won’t be enough…. At least for me. Aaron Tveit is a perfect name for challenging and difficult songs on Broadway musical. He can literally sing any songs. Perfect. When I heard : …. Suddenly …. it’s a very unique voice you hear. I’m no vocal coach but at least I can catch those short moment and I think that’s what makes him unique. You can hear it in some of songs he sang.
Wow wow wow I have just now seen this one of the most fantastic versions of that song! His control and his voice and the emotion are just perfect. I am so honored that I got to work with him on Moulin Rouge and get to see him do so wonderfully every night one of the most consistently perfect singer actors I have ever seen!!!
I mean , for God’s sake, this guy is not for real!!! This is beyond incredible. His singing is seductive, his acting is intoxicating. What an amazing performer! I think this is better than any other rendition of this genius song/aria. I just got goosebumps all over. Wonderful!
And you know, the audience would have kept on clapping and cheering, much longer, were it not for Maestro Tovey moving things along. What an incredible performance! Wow!
I don’t think the Maestro did that, it was Aaron. He tends to cut applause off, he does this in concerts. Almost as if he is uncomfortable or even unworthy of the crazy ovations. He ran off with Laura and they were called back because the conductor knew they didn’t get the proper appreciation for such a duet.
aaron definitely did it justice so gorgeous the vibrato and how he went into his falsetto so gorgeous why he wasnt tony for the movie i have no idea but wow so beautiful ive done this show and i can say this amazed me
fave version as well but unfortunately he's now too old to play Tony in a movie: he's 11 years older than Ansel Egort and 18 years (!) older than Rachel Zegler. He's also 16 years older than Richard Breymer was in the 1961 version. It may work on stage, but it would be another Dear Evan Hansen situation in a movie version. It doesn't take anything away from this performance tho
Fun Fact: When he sings “Maria” he most commonly sings it using a tritone (like at 0:50)- which was associated with the devil at the time… before the writer of West Side Story decided to transform it into something beautiful.
At age 12, I stood alone on the stage of Grady Gammage Auditorium sang this song in for a jury of college music professors. I got a 'standing O' and was the first elementary school student to ever earn a full scholarship to a nationally renown fine arts camp for •high school• kids. They called me a "true Heldentenor." It's always been a work close to my heart but I have never heard an interpretive performance as outstanding as this...since mine in 1966 [KIDDING!!] Tveit's high B-flat is... thrilling!
Thanks for being an Aaron Tveit superfan! I have watched your videos for a year now, wishing I was there too. We got to see him in Moulin Rouge last summer and met him after the show.
lucky you! I really want to see him in Moulin Rouge but I live in Germany and I would have to spend over 1000€ to see it and we just don't have that money, but would it be worth it?
We live in Arizona but a trip to NYC is always worth it when it is safe again! We flew to see Derek Klena in Anastasia and he had the night off so we had to go back a second time to see him before he left the show. It was absolutely worth it though! Aaron was absolutely amazing in Moulin Rouge, the set and cast are all incredible and is worth the trip. The tours are okay but nothing compares to the original Broadway casts if you can make the trip!
no words to describe how exquisite this is, especially at the 1:49-minute mark...music is powerful stuff that moves the invisible insides of our souls. thank you! 💚💙
Gosh I’ve been so hard on this guy in the past and honestly never real got his appeal (other than his good looks), but this absolutely wowed me. I cried. This is just a beautifully acted performance. Maybe the best version of this song?
I always come back to this performance when watching Spielberg's West Side Story. I WISH Jeremy Jordan was Tony in this film. This performance refreshes me after seeing Ansel Esgorts plain rendition of Maria, he was plain and straight faced the whollleeee movie
The most beautiful sound I ever heard Maria, Maria, Maria, Maria All the beautiful sounds of the world in a single word Maria, Maria, Maria, Maria, Maria, Maria Maria! I've just met a girl named Maria, And suddenly that name Will never be the same to me Maria! I've just kissed a girl named Maria, And suddenly I found How wonderful a sound can be Maria! Say it loud and there's music playing, Say it soft and it's almost like praying Maria I'll never stop saying Maria! Maria, Maria, Maria, Maria, Maria, Maria, Maria, Maria, Maria, Say it loud and there's music playing Say it soft and it's almost like praying Maria, I'll never stop saying Maria The most beautiful sound I ever heard Maria!
This is such a wonderful interpretation by Aaron!! I liked Ansel’s one, but Aaron’s voice makes everything realistic, it’s kinda magical. Glad to feel it again
I have no words good enough for how perfect this angelic wonderful beautiful man is and watching this performance is like watching heaven unfold before your eyes. Mr Tveit Sir, I love you so damn much!! Please god give me a gay clone of this amazing man to worship as my own!!! 😍❤️🥰
Aaron, Aaron, Aaron---this is simply divine. I knew you were a huge talent; but it's so rare to have a Tony who not only can sing beautifully, but can act! And your gestures, subtle, fluid, organic--as Fanny Brice sang in Funny Girl--You're a great big clump of talent! Also, I think I'm now in love, but don't worry--I would have said the previous even if I weren't. Blessings to you! (Also, the orchestra--lush and thrilling as always!) Bravo to all-- :)
