Can you believe Mariah didn’t win a Grammy for this song, it was nominated but she didn’t win. Mariah had like over 5 nominations for her album daydream (the album this song is in along with Fantasy) but did not win one single Grammy. That’s why so many of us fans hate the Grammys because they robbed Mariah so many times.

Mariah was nominated for 6 awards that year, including Record of the Year for this song (which was still #1 at the time) and Album of the Year for Daydream. She was shut out of everything, which shocked everyone that year, including many critics who predicted she would clean up that night. It's considered one of the biggest injustices in Grammy history. After that, Mariah went on to score 9 more number #1s and solidified her legendary status in the industry. Moral of the story: awards, at the end of the day, are just SHELF ORNAMENTS and do not define your worth, potential, or legacy.

I love this song. Every time I hear it though it catapults me back to a very sad memory that’s burned into my mind forever. One of my good friends little brother, who was only 8 at the time, died tragically by an accidentally hanging. I was 15 at the time. They played this at his funeral and I will never forget seeing all of his little classmates just sobbing and sobbing. Ohhhh it was heartbreaking. Every time I hear that song I can close my eyes and still see the absolute wave of heart break and grief on everyone’s face. Nevertheless, that’s still one of my favorite songs of all time. ❤

Many people think its record has been broken but it hasn't lol it's still running for the 24/25th year as the longest at number one, streaming/views are not the same as actually sold music. I have always loved this song, but it took a new place in my heart after one of my best friends passed away unexpectedly two years ago. I listened to it every day for weeks, even when it hurt like hell. Just hearing this song in your reaction makes me think of him and the tears start to well. Oh man growing up as a kid in the 90's radio and TV were like the only places where we can listen to music. It's not like today where we can just play any song and listen to any song we want. I just had certain radio stations that I would jump back and forth between to check which songs were playing. This song was SOOO big at the time that it would constantly be playing on every radio station simultaneously. It actually held the record for the most amount of weeks at #1 on billboards, since it came out in the mid 90s, until just recently when that lil nas old town song just broke its record by 1 week.

She dedicated this song to a best friend david Cole from c&c factory who died that year in 1995 but you probably heard one of their 1990 song called gonna make you sweat (everybody dance now)but she told her then controlling husband that she wanna do a song with boyz ii men as a tribute to David Cole but now the song has become a beautiful ballad classic you can hear it playing at weddings graduations and funerals.

If you really want to know how far she can go in terms of all the above, please react to the studio version of "Petals" (off the album Rainbow (1999). The vocals and production are amazing though her songwriting is the true focal point. She once said it took 4 years for her to finish writing this song. IT WAS WORTH IT. Her cascading vocals, honesty within the song and emotion makes this track a true undiscovered highlight of her career.
