In the beginning of Mariah’s career people weren’t aware of her fractured relationship with her mother. She tried so hard to make it work and look like she’s had it all together and that they had a great relationship. So of course she was going to play up their relationship and her inspiration but growing up her mother would belittle Mariah’s singing abilities (read her book) and compared to her mother, she really is heavily self-taught. So stop hating, her music career is over 30 years strong and still going.
That is fake. Her mom made an off-hand comment once. she "you should be lucky to become half the singer i am" and honestly i don't see it as her mom putting her down, i think she was just boasting and tooting her own horn and child mariah was hurt by it. but all our parents say ignorant and potentially hurtful stuff once in a while and i dont think they mean harm by it. but otherwise her mom was supportive of her singing.
She said that her mother told her that mariah would never be half the singer that she is and honestly I feel like her mother set her up with false information about breath support and stuff to protect the voice hence the reason why Maria has nodules. That’s just my theory, though I don’t know
I think her mother KNEW that whistle in the long run can damage her voice that's why Mariah said that the 'training' (classical way) is really strict and requires discipline and she just wanted to be 'free' and do it vocally however she wanted to. If she listened to her mother, she would've been using fully-connected head voice now and her voice is as pretty as ever. I have nothing about whistle (in fact I love that she didn't listen to the classical teaching because we wouldn't be hearing her heavenly whistles if she did), but she really should've trained with her mother. That way, she could switch from whistle to healthy head voice and preserve her voice in the long run. If my mother was an opera singer, I swear I wouldn't shut up and vocalize with her on the piano every day lol
No. Whistle notes do not damage your voice. Mariah has vocal nodules. Most singers who have this cannot sing PERIOD. She has learned to sing around them.
How can you say that about classical, is more commun in classical music to hear the opera singers make use of the whistle tones, listen the Queen of the night.
@@jeviro1083 that's just high head voice, Mariah can sing in HV, falsetto, flageolet (super head voice) and whistle, but she typically relies on whistle and falsetto. Whistle doesn't cause damage, undersinging (so called whisper) absolutely does.
Interesting how she changed from “My mama taught me and coached me, to “she taught me a little bit-when I asked her, but I was too impatient” to basically “I don’t warm up (in a singers way), “I sing to the radio” to “I don’t talk before shows”. I think she tried not give her mom any credit. Just like she pretended not to know what an octave was or how many octaves her range has.. kind of sad. I think a little brushing up on the technique and warm ups in particular would help her voice tremendously to get that warm and round tone back
She doesn't like her mom, because she almost got her killed. In 1969, Mariah was almost shot because her parents (specifically her mother) decided to move in and stay in an all white, racist neighbourhood. They chose to put their mixed race children in danger, so I understand that Mariah wants to discredit her, even if they still appear to be amicable at times.
Interesting. Every other interview she contradicts herself. "My mom trained me," and then, "I haven't done any real vocal lessons," and then, "My mom taught me how to harmonize," and then, "She didn't really teach me, it was more of this and that..."
+Jennifer Smith You're an arrogant and belligerent piece of crap. I can't stand pseudo-intellectuals such as yourself. And no, she doesn't contradict herself. You might want to take it down *several* notches and go back to college and sign up for the psychology and sociology classes you blatantly didn't take.
Jennifer Smith *not being able to stand me isn't my fault.* Thank you for admitting that you're a pseudo-intellectual. That's all I needed to hear. You got called out and I caught you; have fun, bitching to others on the internet about your meaningless "three degrees" which don't mean a *damn* thing over the internet. My sides are hurting from laughing at the fact that you actually think a couple of make-believe degrees actually means something over the internet XD While you're at it, I suggest you remove that atrocious and unflattering profile pic; it only gives others ammunition to dog you to hell. It's about time you overdose on some serotonin pills, so take your own advice and check yourself into a psych ward. The way you talk over the internet, I guarantee you would get busted or popped dead in the face and well-deservingly, too. Good riddance, Snow White!
***** We all know that you're the biggest troll and Mariah hater on RU-vid, so just know that nobody takes you seriously. You can remain pressed at the fact that Mariah slaughters your idol Shanice Wilson all day, everyday.
@@lolitalilaa4478 her here got darker as she got older. Look at her roots now they are dark hair colored. She is one of those people that have blonde hair as a kid and turn darker as they get older.
she had to keep training with more professional vocal coaches, she didn't realize at that time about how things change during years, voice changes so what was okay in her 20's was not okay 10 and 20 years later.
Yea, you have to adapt your technique as you get older, your range, tessitura and passagio change with age so you either have to strengthen your voice and technique or lower the key, your voice also gets weaker as you get older due to thinning of the vocal folds and reduction of breath support.
What she says makes a lot of sense. I can do whistle tones when I can't speak at all/I'm hoarse but when my voice is connected / healthy I can't do them at all. By the way this channel is life! keep uploading videos! :)
Omg, same ! Whenever my voice isn't too warm yet, I can do some whistles. Examples: "Someday", "Lead The Way", even the "Dreamlover" intro...But then, I start exercising, I practice, I sing, I belt...I don't sing too bad, when I use proper techniques to warm up my voice. And that's the moment when I cannot whistle anymore...Or if I can, it doesn't sound as good and resonant as when my voice is cold...Isn't it ironic? I'm fascinated with Mariah, cause she has that great gift: she can go from belting to whistling to anything in a few seconds cause her vocal chords are so flexible. I mean, she's amazing: she can do ANYTHING with her vocal chords. Her voice is not an instrument: it's an orchestra ! And how fast and easily she goes from ( very ) low to, sometimes, ( extremely ) high notes in like two seconds...it's magic. It makes her incomparable. Her voice is a gift from God...Mariah the Queen ^_^
Catherine Vaz have you heard her interview with Craig Seymour? Somewhere in that long interview she kinda goes into more detail about her voice and different textures and what’s easier when and what isn’t. It’s a really fascinating interview overall too
That makes sense. A vocal coach said to train for the whistle tones you can start doing vocal fry. And than try to go up in tone and see how it goes. Vocal fry and hoarse sounds are kind of similar. Maybe this helps you.
Listen listen PEOPLE listen. This is why we try as hard as possible to keep informing people that it WASNT because of improper technique whatsoever. She doesn’t have a bad technique but the reason for her so called decline is because she has nodules (had them since she was a kid) and they got worse each time she would overwork her voice. I’m surprised this isn’t a known enough fact tbh.
Thank you for bringing this up. Mariah has an OTHERWORDLY technique. She needs to in fact, to keep up with the decline of her voice, she needed to be constantly improving her technique and musicality. Vocal nodules cause constant infections and can lead you to become MUTE!!!
The fact that her favorite style of singing is very breathy also adds to her vocal decline. Sadly, her beautiful falsetto has been very damaging to her chords.
How is she jealous in this clip? If anything she's complimenting Mariah. After she says "My mom taught me how to sing and harmonize," her mom says "Mariah is a born singer and gifted."etc.
@@TheAvgWoman O.K. will do. I just don't see what you see in this particular clip. Is it a look? Mariah's mom does kind of have "resting b**ch face." Maybe that's what you see in this clip.
Apparently, her mother is narcissistic and would always tell Mariah that she will never sing as good as her/reach her level. She even called the police when Mariah was on their home because she has a nervous breakdown (around the time of Glitter). It was all stated in her memoir.
He was using his gap as an excuse for not hitting that warm up, and she said that a tooth gap can actually help you sing better (Not word for word. Lol. paraphrasing) she said some of the best singers.... And then it cut off.lol
+tian tang She said "You know that could help you too, some of the best singers have gap--- yes!" Singing greatly stems from how much air you can intake to utilize, so if he has a gap he could let more air in than someone with all their teeth... I guess? It was a joke but I imagine he could draw in air from the gap lol
This video is a great example of how non-whites are trained to honor thy mother and father even to the point of struggling to give them credit for what they didn't do well while raising us. (Hint: It's time for us to start crediting GOD instead of our dishonorable parents.)
+FlylikeaBr1an She probably changed her singing style due to the nodules that got worse in around 97-98, the 90s were pretty much demanding to her already fragile voice with the nodules she have since childhood, she was releasing singles every year, performing, recording albums, making shows, tours, in 1996 she was on her vocal prime in the daydream tour and in 97 she suddenly appeared hoarse and she should have take a break for vocal rest but instead she still worked hard releasing songs, albums and tours she even said that there were times when she didn't sleep for days what is pretty wearying to a healthy vocal cords, sadly for her it caused even more damage, and at that point her voice started degrading. She also have some bad habits like alcool. Even so she is still a good singer, just not like she was in 90s
+Alex Lundell The thing is that when you are a singer vocal guidance by an experienced and credible voice instructor is necessary for all singers. We are all humans and make mistakes and stray so we need to always be humble and have that professional who will always steer us in the right direction vocally. There is this belief that if you are trained you no longer have "a natural God given gift". Which is total BS! A good singer always trains their voice, which, is why Mariah is always needing tea or humidity to 'sustain' her voice. Those things are cliche and doesn't help the voice when you really need it in concert, singing live, when you need it the most.
Jack Walker Mariah will be aware of my existence soon (I will meet her in February), but that’s not the point. I can stick up for anyone. You can’t tell me otherwise.
and what if that's what she really does? I mean that, practically, can be a form of warm up. You just want to hate on Mariah, I've seen your other comments on other videos. Clearly, you're the pathetic one here.
@@xiao2653 She isn't a freak, but she definetly doesn't take care of her voice anymore. There's a whole vid about it by the yt channel Ain't no other fan. Basically she doesn't lower the key enough, she hasn't lowered the key of any of her songs in years besides emotions, which she should lower to G# major as well, zero vocal prep besides those whistle trills which do NOT do shit, and not getting vocal surgery on her nodules is dumb imo because her voice isn't getting any better, so she has less to lose, not saying she's actually getting worse tho yk, just lazy
