This is a little tribute I made to the costumes of "Marie Antoinette" (1938).The costumes for "Marie Antoinette" were the most lavish ever created for a Film. Fabrics were specially woven in France. Hundreds of yards of antique laces, Gold and Silver cloth, Silk brocades and velvets were used. Embroiderers were brought from europe to decorate the gowns with exquisite hand-work. In all Norma Shearer wore 34 costumes, All made to couture standards. Nothing was spared to create Beautiful interpretations of 18th century Fashions. The costumes play up the drama in every scene and follow Marie Antoinette's rise and fall as Queen of France. The costumes were designed by the most influential costume designer of the 1930s,Gilbert Adrian. I highly recommend this film to any History, film or fashion lover.

My grandmother sewed couture for Adrian's Beverly Hills Salon (1941-1952) after the left MGM. My Great-Aunt told me that a couple of he gowns my Grandma sewed were used in the films. She didn't say which films and I cannot believe I didn't ask her directly.

Some of the costumes weighed 20, 30 or more pounds and Shearer practiced relentlessly at home with them, long before the movie started filming. It paid off; despite the ornate wardrobe and wigs, Shearer moves through every scene of the movie with almost balletic grace. The film opened to great success in July 1938, and it then looked like Scarlett O'Hara might be hers on a platter, but her fan clubs objected and Shearer gracefully bowed out of the running.

I was just thinking about how gracefully Norma moved, as though she had been wearing these giant dresses all her life. I like knowing this kind of stuff. For a true fan of costumes in general, this baby tops them all. A really young Tyrone Power also doesn't hurt.
