Marie Huot (1846 - 1930) was a French feminist, animal rights activist and an early antinatalist. In this video I look into Marie's antinatalist beliefs and uncover an antinatalist lecture she gave in 1892 that caused a large media reaction.

Notes since publishing: • Marie Huot was cremated in Père-Lachaise Cemetry, Paris. More information: traditionalistblog.blogspot.com/2010/12/date-of-death-of-marie-huot_15.html?m=1 • This document seems to suggest that there are multiple versions of Jacques Maheu's article containing an interview with Marie: www.bibliorare.com/wp-content/uploads/catalogue/pdf/cat-lib-scriptorial-juin2012.pdf Access to the handwritten version of his article/interview may also be available: www.bibliorare.com/ - Marie Huot used a male pseudonym for a while: Édouard Mill. There are a couple articles mostly from 1883-1885 that refer to her by this name. Interestingly, they call her Madame Édouard Mill and use she/her pronouns, she gave some lectures in the name of La Ligue contre la vivisection under that name. As a feminist, Marie Huot clearly understood the importance of pockets. I like the fact that she used hers to carry a stash of whistles to a bullfight. You’ve been spoiling us with the recent videos on the history of antinatalism. I appreciate the time and effort that goes into making them and hope there may be more to come.

Love the video, thanks so much for making it, I was so curious about Marie after the discussion you had about Kurnig where you mentioned her. After this video I can safely say that I just love her. She's so incredibly inspiring and she embodies the flame that I seek for justice movements like veganism and antinatalism. It breaks my heart to imagine all the bullshit people inflicted upon her for advocating for these amazing values, which were so groundbreaking and unique for her time. I truly wish I could be there to support her. When it comes to the more questionable reported cases of her killing animals: I can't imagine that someone as passionate as this about prevention and alleviation of suffering of all sentient beings would do something like that *if there wasn't a critically important and justifiable reason to do so*. It's important to remember that back then anesthetics didn't exist, and if an animal was going through terminal excruciating suffering, people at the time who wished to spare those animals didn't have the emotional privilege of ending their suffering painlessly. With all the information and insight about her personality even just from this video, I'm convinced that she would have never killed an animal if she didn't 100% believe it was in their best interest, and I think that that makes her even more impressive and admirable. I think she would have taken joy in knowing that today people celebrate her death anniversary rather than her birthday. Rest in peace, you magnificent legend. ❤

I know that Marie Huot influenced many French anarchists of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, whether for veganism, feminism and for birth prevention. Many of his tendencies were expressed in the weekly newspaper "L'anarchie" run by Albert Libertad from where I believe that most of the articles were never translated into English and remained in French. Unfortunately it remained a marginal circle which completely disappeared after the First World War. At the time this was not used under the term antinatalism but rather under the term neo-Malthusianism which also mixed the eugenicists although neo-Malthusianism had largely separated itself from Malthus in favor of limited or abolish births regardless of socio economical status and genes. However, his choices of non-procreation were more based on the question of hygiene, freedom and the challenge to patriarchy rather than philosophical opinions in relation to suffering or even consent. I would therefore consider all of this as proto-antinatalism rather than truly established antinatalism.

why would people put a person in a place where you constantly need to be crossing your fingers to not lose your job or get into an accident or any of all the bad things that can happen to you. a place where you need to constantly be begging to your imaginary all powerful friend to protect you from all the misfortune that can fall on you because, you know, this is such a wonderful paradise that you need an all powerful friend to protect you from harm.a place where people wear all kind of amulets to feel protected from evil and misfortune. a place where you are supposed to say you are blessed because you won the cosmic lottery and are not suffering from some serious illness or pain, or you were not born in a shit hole and are not eating garbage, or you do not need to work as a little child in order to have some crumbles to eat. if you do all of the things mentioned above, that means you acknowledge this is not a good place to be but, you say people need to be grateful for this?. you MUST be grateful for this? how does that make sense and why would you subject another person, a person you say you love, to this place?. people love to say they were blessed and that they are grateful for what they have and grateful to be here, but what about those that were not blessed? what about them? F them? tough luck? that is life? how do you justify that they must bear all kind of pains and suffering but, who cares right? you were blessed and that is all that matters. why the stupid god blesses some but not others? and why are religious and non religious people ok with others not being blessed?. and you do not even know how it will unfold for those you created and you say you love. you do not know if your kids will be "blessed" . it is a literal gamble for them, if it goes wrong, i guess, they can simply tell them, tough luck or, that is life. that shows how much you love them, right?. another thing that is irrational is that, according to religious and non religious people, you must always be grateful for being forcibly thrust into this place. does not matter if you were blessed or not, does not matter if you eat garbage or not, pain or no pain, you must always be grateful for being thrown in this place

@@LouisGedo I agree. The idea that the elimination of all life is the only sure way to prevent suffering could have been expressed before Gary gave it a name. One line could be taken to mean efilism, but it's a translation and we can't be sure what "world" and "life" mean as she used it in French. "Obviously, the world will come to an end sooner or later, and I for one have no problem with that. I do not even mind glimpsing into the mists of eternity and seeing the earth finally purged of its human microbes - left to the wild flora and fauna, awaiting the blessed day when it is stripped of this last instance of life."
