As a RN of 35yrs experience, I can tell Marie that looking for alternative methods for pain relief is wonderful, as long as you can actually move without pain for a certain extent. The thing is, you're going to have pain. The thing is to take pain killers regularly so that you are able to perform your usual activities of daily living or a modified version, while you 'rest and relax' and allow yourself to heal. You do not need levels of pain relief that sedate you, as most people with any pain experience can tell you no matter how much you have you will still have some level of pain, even while you are unconscious you are aware of it. We aim to control your pain, so you can mobilise, shower, move about and gradually do more and more each day. You should not be scared of taking pain relief if you have pain. It is true you can develop tolerance to pain relief over time. But if accept the fact that you will have pain, you do have to move, lets just make this as comfortable as possible without narcotising the crap out of you. Cheers Marie, I do hope you don't suffer too much and feel better soon. Metallic thread!!! Oh Stephanie the horror!! as you will find out, although the look is gorgeous, its horrible to use, as it tends to break and unravel or shear. But good luck with it.

I'm an RN too. Anti-inflammatories are necessary - such as Ibuprofren, and taken with paracetamol, both non addictive and safe when taken according to directions. Please don't suffer! 💖 xx

What a wonderful, thoughtful, compassionate comment! I hope she reads it and considers it. I hate painkillers myself, coming from a family that has a history of addictions, but have found that when necessary, a half-dose helps without the negative effects. After ten years with prescribed meds for endometriosis, I still only take a half-dose when it's necessary, and it allows me, as you said, to keep moving, which helps the body heal itself.

@@eledatowle8767 I worked for 10 years in drug and alcohol recovery, apart from specialising in ICU and Recovery Nursing. My D&A work taught me many valuable things that I still apply to my work even today. Even for opiate sensitive people, whether via addiction or physical sensitivity (due other conditions), there are a lot of medication options other than sedatives for pain relief. You don't need to opioid pain relief if you would rather work through without it, but you don't need to suffer needlessly and drugs like naproxen, and other anti-inflammatories and actually there other alternatives such anxiety/depression meds than have been shown to have very effective pain relief pathways. These are usually taken in a lower dose than if you were suffering actual anxiety or depression, but because the nerve endings for all these things are so very close related these drugs can have very positive effects. Not only because acute and chronic pain can give you both anxiety and depression. We even use some elliptic medication in the treatment of ongoing persistent nerve pain. Remember thildimide? Well that is now being used as a cardiac drug with good affect! and no side effects, not like when it was originally used on pregnant women. I do hope Marie is kind to herself, she looked like she was suffering terribly when she was hunched over hobbling with her stick. I did feel for her. The other thing I didn't mention is that heat and cold and tens machine (electrical stimulation) and you can buy these easily online or from the chemist to use are great for relieving tight muscle spasms. I have one and use mine on my knee replacement even though its ceramic, but the muscles around it are not.

This is a very informative and helpful post. I've had JRA since I was a child which means daily joint pain. Without my meds I would not be able to function. And yes you take enough to deal with the pain but not so much that it incapacitates you. I've had terrible back spasms too when arthritis got into my spine, so I know what it is to have that kind of gut-wrenching pain and max out my pain meds. It's not fun. It takes time and a lot of rest. You want to move but you do not want to stress your joints. It's not a time to be doing chores. I know there are people that are afraid of addiction for good reason. But when you take pain medicine to deal with chronic pain, you're not getting high from it. The only thing you're getting is pain relief. And the ability to return to a normal activity level. You are absolutely right that you have to stay ahead of it with regular dosages at prescribed levels. Those levels are not addictive. Not with responsible health care professionals. And you never take pain medicine to deal with emotional pain. The same reason you never drink alcohol because you feel sad or lonely.

I feel her pain, sciatica as well S I joint can cause this. Or a nerve route impingement from a disk bulge. My case I have unstable spondylolethesis from an injury caused by a horse 15 years ago when I got slammed into a door jam by a colicy horse resulting in a broken peice of what is called a pars defect of the articulation between L-5 & S-1 thus pushing one ahead of the other, and it won’t stay put. I’m delaying fusion as long as possible. But with Marie no bending, twisting or lifting. An OTC will help take down inflammation as well pain. I hope she feels better.

Please tell Marie, from one who has suffered back pain since I was 19, that she needs to ice her back area for about 20 minutes at a time. DO NOT APPLY HEAT!! Heat causes water to build in the tissue which will cause additional pain. Ice several times daily until it feels better. Walking is the most beneficial thing she can do. The more the better! I'm so sorry you are having issues. It is excruciating, I know! best wishes for a speedy recovery!! I have to ask, just because I am amazed that Stephanie NEVER arrives on time, just how late you were to arrive at your destination?? Best wishes to all!! Katie Karen, Oklahoma, USA

I agree on the gentle walks but my therapist told me the exact opposite to your advice and that is to use heat for 10 mins every hour and don't allow tge muscles to get cold because that will cause more spasms and they in turn can cause more damage. She really needs to see a doctor to get a diagnosis because different conditions and injuries need different approaches.
@katielancaster9005
@katielancaster9005 Год назад
I fought for years with different approaches recommended by different physicians with different specialities. Also worked in the medical field with an excellent osteopathic physician. His advice was never use heat unless alternating with ice. It has always worked best for my lumbar injury! The walking was recommended by a spine specialist due to the "washing machine" motion helping to loosen the injured area. I finally had 360° fusion 20 years after my injury. Never without pain if I overdo!! I feel fortunate to have had excellent care! Best regards!

Follow any heat used with and Ice pack. This will minimize any swelling. NO LIFTING of any kind. Moderate exercise. And I would suggest a lower back brace to give support and a foundation for the lower back. I got mine here in the USA from "Muller". Best from Los Angeles - Rick

Marie, I feel for you! I walk in much the same manner frequently. Magnesium, in the form of Epsom salts would work wonders on relaxing the muscles. I use it in a spray form nearly daily to help with fibromyalgia muscle pain, and it's a life saver! If you have some Epsom salts, you can just dissolve it in warm water, soak a small towel in it and put the towel on your back, This saves from getting in and out of a tub, which is tricky with a back in spasm. I hope you're feeling much better soon!

Yes! Magnesium can indeed help with back pain, all muscle pain really, and altho it is difficult to get in & out of the tub, the hot water is also very good for relaxing the muscles. Then, use ice pack afterwards to decrease inflammation. Treatment definitely depends on the cause/ source of the problem/ pain. I too have FMS & have recently discovered “magnesium salts” ( which aren’t really “salts” at all) When used in a warm/ hot bath, they can deliver more magnesium to the body ( compared to EpsomSalts) through the skin. There is also magnesium spray ( mag salts diluted in water) & mag cream, which is made with “melted” mag salts & mixed with shea butter ( or something similar) These products can be bought pre made or made yourself at home.RU-vid has lots of videos on all of these products & it’s well worth an investigation Sorry for so many words, but I’m passionate about utilizing all of the abundant, beautiful, magical things that our Mother Earth has provided us with to help heal our bodies & minds. I hope you start feeling better Marie.🌼🪻🌷💐🌸🌹🪷🌺 Have you done ( or considered) chiropractic adjustments? That quite literally saved my life after a series of automobile accidents many years ago. Such a great idea with the Epsom salts on a wet towel . I know it is true about Epsom salts and have Fibromyalgia and severe arthritis and degenerative discs and spinal stenosis. Have had a few back surgeries and other surgeries during my years. I know how hard it is on most days and really suffer the older I get. Will need to try it with towels' as it is hard to get into bathtub, but have used it on a wet cloth, but not a large wet towel, and could keep it on longer. TY @lorassorkin, you have helped me and many others! Have heard pf magnesium and have used that as well. Very hard without pain meds I find though as it is just terrible and at some time more than others, weather and stress has much to do with it,

@@mariewiik I have some tips that can be helpful, not only now, but to avoid future episodes of back pain. #1) In the area where you stand to do your flower arrangement, standing on a hard floor, probably cement, put down some dense foam floor mats, with a bit of spring/bounce to them, to cushion your feet and body. Another option is to tape down firmly, a couple yoga mats to walk back and forth on. #2) When carrying heavy things, like water, hold the container close to your body, back straight and bend the knees slightly, using your legs to carry most of the weight rather than your back. Carry smaller amounts, even if you have to make more trips, avoid too heavy. 3) When carrying things of weight, wear a wide, elastic back brace with velcro fasteners to adjust to fit and quick and easy putting on and off. This will support your back muscles and hold the abdomen firm, giving extra back support. Saves from strain. I broke my back in an accident and I speak from decades of experience. Hope these tips are helpful to prevent further injury and suffering. ^_^ BTW, Love your presence, flowers and smile.

Do they get three meals a day or just two? You have four bedrooms and two gites available this season. 83 divided by 8, some used more than 10 per person in 4 days. Did they do picnics? That is where I would have been. ❤

Dear Marie ... take it from someone who has been through what you are going through many times. Lay down for 48 hours and only get up if you have to go to the bathroom. Don't use your back; give the inflammation a chance to go down and give your back time to heal. Even though you don't want to, you should most likely be taking a pain killer, an anti=inflammatory and a muscle relaxant. Please do yourself a big favour and go to a doctor for the prescriptions. If you don't take care of it properly, it will be a recurring thing. I'm sure your room mates will help you in any way they can. ♥😊

Oh Marie! Don't stop moving! Moving is the best lotion for bone stiffness and taught muscles. I have had feet, leg, and back pain when I stop walking for a week. If I keep walking most days it helps a ton! If it's inflammation pain sugar will make it worse, unfortunately. I hope you feel better soon!

Marie, as a naturopath I can say that taking some anti inflammatory medicine like ibuprofen, low doses and every other day, actually helps the healing, not just covering up pain. Reducing the inflammation is the first step in getting the cause of the pain under control. I also stubbornly try to avoid allopathic medicine but I have been in your situation and learned that medicine (along with compresses and stretches) can be a great help. Hope you get thru this quickly!

I think the shutters look so beautiful on the chateau. Your chateau is unique in the sense, its more inviting do to the fact it's less formal and more creative and less fussy. Dare I say even a little Bohemian, so to speak. What can I say, I adore the shutters! (Mrs.P)
