I don't think the romantic type of love is special, and I think that the romantic type of love isn't real. I mean about more than half of romantic couples either break up with each other or divorce each other. I think humans should just ditch concepts like dating, marriage, and pair bonding. I feel like this world would be a much better place without romance than it is with it.

People jumped immediately into romance during these times because they knew life was incredibly fleeting. Werner and Marie both knew they’d made a connection that would be the love of their lives.

@@Brownsocksflirt I recognize people would jump into romance for that reason but that doesn't mean it's the best way to tell a story. Appreciating the fleetingness of life was perfectly established with the dancing and the kiss was not necessary to show that. You can also demonstrate a powerful emotional connection in ways other than kissing (the series Maniac does this really well). But, to me at least, it felt narratively disjunct having the kiss and then Werner surrendering to the Americans. Moreover it felt weird for Marie to develop such strong romantic feelings for having only know Werner for a few hours. Like you said, those few hours were very intense and had a lot of emotions and that's plenty to establish a strong bond, but it doesn't feel long enough to establish a ~romantic~ bond specifically. But mainly, I still feel it might have had more weight to the story if there wasn't that catharsis of a kiss for their relationship right before they were separated. It's the difference between leaving something you love behind versus leaving something behind that's only just started. While the relationship has only started with or without the kiss, the kiss is cementing that relationship and positioning it as something already mostly there, which doesn't make as much sense for me. I don't mean to say the kiss was necessarily wrong or a bad decision to include. My main point is there are plenty of other ways to establish an emotional connection besides kissing, and I think this show would have been fresher and stronger if it chose a different avenue for that, especially when it was such a short moment. I recognize this is very much a personal preference, but I just like having more subtext than explicit text, and I think for this moment especially it would have really benefited from leaning more into subtext.

@@PorterNetwork look up real life WW2 romances and stories… it’s remarkable how fast people became entangled. They were much more romantic back then with very different desires and hopes than nowadays…and yes, incredibly impulsive because of the era and war. It’s absolutely realistic that they’d kiss, if it was real life they’d have made love too. Many , many people fell in love immediately or lust during this war.
