I was working front of house then. We would run round to the side of the building to listen as she sang through the arias in her dressing room, then back into the auditorium to hear them again from her onstage. LOVED her!
Wow! This has to be one of the best Queen of the Night's I've ever heard! Clean, precise and just amazing! It makes me more attracted to this role! Just incredible! Devia is a great artist! And I am just loving everything!!!
Già nel 1989 non era più soltanto il solito sopranino di coloratura: mostrava già i caratteri che le avrebbero consentito di eccellere, nell'ultima parte della carriera, nei grandi ruoli del belcanto drammatico. Davvero brava!
Infatti!..sembra quasi stimbrare i suoni per dar loro un effetto drammatico...ma molto di piu' di Luciana Serra ed Edita Gruberova ( tanto per fare paragoni)...la piu' grande interprete del repertorio preromantico !♥️♥️
I actually attended one of these performances, at Covent Garden, 29th July 1989. She was pretty spectacular, Karita Mattila was Pamina and Jane Eaglen first lady. Not a bad cast!

Definitely one of the best Queens i´ve heard so far. Technically faultless here and the voice sounds powerful, not one of these doll sopranos in this role.
Normally, me neither. But this particular performance of the Queen of the Night, I think is unusually exceptional! Especially in Der Holle Rache, where she has really captured the Queen's evil fury. Well done.
Mariella Devia e' stata un Soprano in grado di cantare per 50 anni...la sua tecnica formidabile fondata sullo studio perenne e la sua delicata sensibilita' coprono alla grande un timbro alquanto comune. Non e' mai stata una Sutherland per volume e ricchezza di timbro..pero' Gruberova e Serra se le mangiava in un sol boccone!
