The Strasberg's definitely used her. Lee did help her with her acting, but he also used her fame to make $$ for the actors studio, and made her dependence on himself and Paula Strasburg become toxic. The weekly salary she was giving them was extremely extravagant for the 1950s. Lee even defied her request in her will. She requested that all of her possessions be distributed to her friends and those she loved. Instead, he hoarded them for decades, and passed on these items to his second widow, who never even met MM. She put these items up for auction. She made over $10,000,000.00 from someone that she never even met.
It seems like Marilyn Monroe was used and her trust was abused for all of her life. What a terrible thing to do to a woman who believed she trust Lee Strausberg. He was charlatan.

I agree partially. But then it was Arthur Miller's job to provide her with love, self confidence and security. He had married a beautiful superstar. Now it was his responsibility to be and act like her family, the one that she never had. Why did she have to go searching for it in strangers. Its coz her husbands were selfish & jealous gits.

I think she was trying to find her identity. She wanted to be more than a sex symbol. She wanted to be taken seriously. She thought if she went to the Actors Studio, she would get better roles. And taken seriously!

So many people in the documentaries made about her downplay her talent, abilities, intelligence, and the validity of her feelings about her life. I wish she could have been born in a time where the public and her peers would root for her to take her power back by pursuing her passions seriously. She must have felt so discouraged constantly being around the people who still put her down so long after she passed.
I purchased the original NY Times for the day of her death, and it was obvious from their patronizing way of speaking about her that she was taken for granted and abused during he lifetime by many in the press. The Times even went so far as to state that "...she really wasn't an actress". Compare that to today. The American Film Institute named her the sixth greatest actress of all time. I wish she had been alive when her talent was acknowledged and appreciated. She would have been so happy and proud of the recognition.
She really was a beautiful woman! I feel there was alot of jealousy and manipulation around her to keep her under control to keep her in a state of insecurity because her strength and beauty was a serious threat to those around her!
Marilyn Monroe was a great actress, shame she didn't have more self belief. Seems to me, all her insecurities stemmed from her sad childhood, that sort of beginning in life has to have a profound effect upon a person. Then the Hollywood system took advantage of her financially, mentally and physically, in other words they used her. All those pills didn't help either. Plus with her mother suffering from mental illness perhaps she was predetermined to have it at some level. She was always searching for something, she never seemed content at any period of her life. So sad because she was beautiful, talented, witty and funny. Tragic.
people like straberg and Miller took a lot from her, they literally took her spirit. It's so creepy to her interviews of Miller talk about her .... like dude are you serious ? He would insult her craft and then watch her fall apart, in his words after he saw her being demoralised her realized the mistake he made by marrying her. I have never been more desgusted with man like I was with miller and I never knew that shmuck !

That's is the same place where not only Marilyn took classes but the TV show Inside The Actors Studio with host James Lipton was filmed there and the following famous people took classes there. Oliver didn't hire Monroe for ANYTHING. Marilyn Monroe Productions bought the film rights, hired Larry as director and co-Star and paid his salary! I think method acting really messed with Marilyn's head. I had a painful childhood myself and even the idea of trying to push up and relive those painful memories just to bring a fictional character to life is traumatizing. not healthy. But she was a perfectionist and needed to be the best. Also, I'm sure Marilyn knew they used her, Marilyn was no fool. Like the son said, she used them too. My guess is she felt she got a good tradeoff-- a good acting teacher and a family who gave her attention anytime of the day or night. although I don't think it was worth it in the end. Too toxic.

Marilyn Monroe was born with a lot of inner issues. There was nothing no one could do for her because the issue was too strong. A troubled mind only gets worst especially when drugs and drink is added. She knew she had that it about herself she just depended on others to help her with fighting a system that was over powering and run by men. Her madness was part of what she inherited from her mother and one of her fears is not ending up like her mom. She was one troubled very troubled woman. Yet she was gifted with so much beauty that lights up the screen. That was her God given gift.

Lee Strasberg was absolutely right about about Marilyn Monroe. No matter his motives, he was right. She was a genius comedian who had that rare raw talent that never had a chance to bloom to its fullness. She also was a brilliant actress, if you watch her films: Don't Bother to Knock, Bus Stop, Some Like it Hot, The Misfits -- and all the others. She was exquisitely sensitive, and that brilliance really showed in Bus Stop. She had some incredible moments, and she seemed so fragile, almost gossamer. And then of course one of the greatest comedic movies of all time, Some like it Hot. She really was used by so many people, even those who genuinely cared about her. I studied at the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute in 1987, and there were so many stories from teachers, just general stories all around. What's so awful was around the time of her death she was planning on changing her will and taking Strasberg out of it. She had left her entire estate to Lee Strasberg, but she died before she could change the will. I think she was beginning to realize that she was depending on him (and others) way too much, and wanted to try it on her own. (The story is inaccurate here.) Even more tragic was that Lee's second wife, Anna, inherited all of the estate when Lee Died, including rights to any movie, anything connected to Marilyn Monroe: t-shirts, souvenirs, all those sorts of things. And she took over running the school. She was not the nicest person to deal with (many people actually despised her), and of course, became insanely wealthy when Lee died. I think Marilyn would have been horrified by that. Just tragic.

Some exceptionally insightful and interesting comments here about Marilyn Monroe and the Strasbergs. There's been discussion of Lee and Paula Strasberg using Marilyn but did she possibly use them too? They were useful to one another. Too, as mentioned in the documentary, Marilyn did improve as an actress once she was involved with the Strasbergs and the Method. I don't think that's a one-time thing either: Susan Strasberg was an outstanding actress even as a teenager and then there are many other students of Method acting who have done superlative work. "The play's the thing..." Whatever exactly was the nature and balance of the Monroe-Strasberg connection and despite the other, maybe questionable, people this led Marilyn to, Marilyn Monroe became a better and memorable actress worthy of the word "actress" and gave memorable performances. The Strasbergs genuinely helped Marilyn achieve her goal.
Nope, don't agree. She already was a fine COMEDIC actress, but could not accept it. Her dramatic roles are not that great. She did The Seven Year Itch without the Strasbergs and was absolutely brilliant. I actually think it is a better movie then "Some Like it Hot". Marilyn was at her physical and mental peak at the time of filming in 1954. The Strasbergs just ripped her off financially and used her name to garner fame and prestige for their "Acting Studio". Essentially, the Strasbergs were scum/grifters and Marilyn was too good for them, but didn't realize it.

Marilyn Monroe was a great actor !! Her medium was comedy which is the most difficult acting for any actor , but for so many drama is recognized as the best acting. It's so wrong especially since drama is easier !!
When I watch movies from that era, EVERYONE acts weirdly to me. That's how the use to act. I see Bette Davies, Vivian Leigh, clark Gable -every big name seems to be acting in a strange. Anne Baxter in "All About Even" makes me move uncomfortably in my chair. Not at all like a normal person would talk and move. they all seem to be talking strange. Marilyn was no different in this regard. but she does get your full attention every time she shows on the screen, she does have a wonderful charming comic specialty. And in some of her dramatic parts that I have seen like Niagara and Bus Stop she has truly memorable moments.
