A Brentwood home once occupied by movie star Marilyn Monroe has been temporarily saved from demolition as the Los Angeles City Council passed a motion on Friday to designate it a historic site.
The motion, introduced by Councilwoman Traci Park, recommends that the city's Cultural Heritage Commission or the director of planning review the 2,900-square-foot Spanish colonial-style home to determine if can be listed among the city’s historic cultural monuments.
“It is imperative that the City’s historic-cultural treasures be celebrated, and foremost, that its historical sites be preserved for future generations. As such, the historic-cultural merits of this property need to be assessed,” the motion reads.
KTLA's Chris Wolfe reports on September 8, 2023.

@@SundayBlues555 Um, hell no. Kim deliberately disobeyed Norma's Last Wish by wearing the specially made, specially tailored dress that Norma wore to sing Happy Birthday to John F. Kennedy and Norma specifically said that no one else was to wear that dress if she were to die. But years later Kim the narcissist disobeyed that last wish, and stretched the fabric and ruined the dress for the rest of time because she wanted to be a selfish fame-seeking little brat. And yes, I am calling her Norma because that was her name... not Marilyn. Marilyn was only her stage name and nothing more. Norma was an orphan, going from foster home to foster home and she had little that was personally her own, and that dress was one of those items that was tailored and made specifically for her to wear that one time. Kim would ruin Norma's last house as well, if given the chance.

I agree, this home is gorgeous & yes developers are greedy (not just in Los Angeles). I am not sure I understand the point/reason/need for "This would never happen in Santa Barbara." Is it meant to create/inforce an "Us vs. Them" "We're better than THOSE people" mentality? Which to be honest we do not need more of in this world.

@@cheleshows I also don't understand their "never happen in SB" comment either. It came off as quite snobbish but that's just me. Reminds me of when Santa Barbara went to war with the rest of the 805 area code cities. The area was running out of numbers and SB felt they shouldn't have to add another area code to the mix, everyone else should have to do so. They wanted 805 just for themselves, luckily, they lost. SB county is also home to Montecito, the town where the "disgraced British royals" currently reside.

She didn't die at the home, she died at Roosevelt Hotel. Her ghost still haunts the hotel, there's been multiple reports over the years of spotting her in the reflection of her favorite mirror which actually used to be in the room she died in, but too many hotel guests were getting spooked by seeing her in the mirror in the middle of the night so the hotel staff moved the mirror out into one of the hallways.

It would be good if we made it a living treasure. Marilyn Monroe was a trail blazer and she made a lot of changes in the way Hollywood was treating females in the industry. She stood up for the underdogs in Hollywood and she made it quiet clear that she didn’t like the way that Hollywood treated female actresses. She was a beautiful person both inside and out. I think we owe it to her and so dose Hollywood to honour her good name by keeping her house and preserving it for generations to come. Let’s not forget her like so many people did when she was a vibrant beautiful young woman. 🥰

i love Marilyn and I love old homes and I love LA history, but I certainly would expect LA to pay the current owners full price for the house. The housing lots in LA are worth way more than the old out of date homes that stand upon them. that's prob why the owner(s) were planning to tear down a 94yo structure, no matter what famous person lived there.

I think it would be great to see this house close up. There are many houses in Los Angeles that offer architectural tours and this should be one of them. Plenty of Brentwood monstrosities. Huge kudos to Traci Park, the LA city council, and the many like minded folks who initiated and/or rallied behind the continuing efforts to save this architectural and historical treasure. Hopefully, this place will become a fully protected, enduring testament to the legacy of the intelligent, gifted, driven, iconic beauty who called it home and made it her own. Rest in peace, Ms. Norma Jeane... you are forever in our hearts, and you will never be forgotten.

Built in 1929, worth about $8 million, the new owners want it demolished. Marilyn ⚘ only lived there months before she died. 😔 Such a sad ending.

It's the property value in Brentwood, The owners would build a new house there and ask 30mil or more citing "The [property] once belonged to a Hollywood icon" as a tag. People in the market for homes in that area nowdays probably had parents who weren't born for at least a decade after she passed. The younger generation today wouldn't have the same appreciation for Marilyn Monroe as they would have for someone like Heath Ledger or even Jimmy Buffett. Luckily there are people still around who do appreciate Marilyn Monroe's legacy but I gotta tell ya, Its a dying breed.

@@Al_Catraz1 that'sfor sure! Few youngsters have heard of the classic "Margaritaville" released in 1977. 😊

The new owners probably afraid Marilyn's house will depreciate in value like the Brady house did even though the third owners had that hallmark living room staircase installed

@@Fa_Qx2 I remember when HGTV was renovating the Brady Bunch house...Asking $5.5 million and after months on the market,, sold for $3.2 million to a fan that has no intention of living there. The renovated inside is very 1970's and maybe not to everyone's liking...orange kitchen countertops.😖

They should save it, there’s plenty of other spaces to build oversized McMansions on. This home looks to very cozy and didn’t to earth style living.

Excellent! This home is truly historical!!! Like, we are not even American and could never fathom thinking of demolishing such a historical monument as Marilyn Monroe’s home! Like, the owners need to slap themselves. What kind of prescriptions are they on?!!!. Seroisly, Doctors need involved here

So glad the city council is stepping in there are many historically signifigant houses that have been razed to make room for monstrosities with no character.

The state can restore it and then offer tours. I’d like to learn the history in the room where it happened. To feel how it feels to be where Marilyn Monroe lived her life. She deserves to be remembered as a woman who inspires greatness. I love her in her role as Sugar in the movie Some Like It Hot 🩷
