Marina Lambrini Diamandis (born October 10, 1985 in Abergavenny), known as MARINA (formerly Marina and the Diamonds) - Welsh indie rock singer of Greek origin, composer and songwriter.
Marina Diamandis earned a reputation with the 2nd place in the annual Sound of..., or BBC Sound of 2010 gala, placing on the list of winners right after Ellie Goulding. Following the release of the private EP Mermaid Vs. Sailor EP in 2007, Diamandis released her second, The Crown Jewels EP, this time on Neon Gold Records in 2009. She is currently an artist on 679 Recordings, through which she released her debut full-length album, The Family Jewels, followed by her third EP- ke, The American Jewels EP, both released in 2010. In 2011, Marina Diamandis announced that she was working on a second full-length album, heating up the atmosphere by posting new photos on her tumblr.com profile and releasing two music videos for the songs that were later released on the album - "Fear & Loathing" and "Radioactive". . Electra Heart was released on April 30, 2012 in the UK, and the first single "Primadonna" was released on April 16. The whole concept of the album is based on the archetype of a blonde diva who gets lost in her own fame and is rotten to the core, but also about her personal fascination with the United States and how easy it is to become a star there without really being nobody. To make the whole thing more believable, she cut her long black hair (as seen in the music video for "Fear & Loathing") and bleached her hair to a very light platinum blonde, and completely changed her dress style and even her makeup. Her third album Froot was released in 2015. The artist worked on the album in the studio with David Kosten. The release was in the top ten of the Billboard 200. In the first half of 2016, Marina announced a planned, longer break from the music industry. She commented on this by sending the following message to fans: "It's like a dream. I've achieved so much during this time. I need to take a break and try new things. It's not goodbye forever, just for a short while." At the turn of 2016 and 2017 the artist published the first photos from the recording studio. In March 2017, she officially announced that she was working on new material, but she had been struggling with fatigue for a long time. Three months later, in June, the song "Disconnect" by Clean Bandit was published, with which they performed at the Coachella Festival in 2015 and at the Glastonbury Festival in 2017 together with Marina. In August 2018, Diamandis announced that work on her fourth album was coming to an end, and in April 2019 her double album Love + Fear was released. The inspiration for its creation was the concept of the psychologist Elisabeth Kübler-Ross, assuming that there are only two emotions [footnote needed]: love and fear, so all positive emotions come from love and all negative emotions come from fear [6]. The album is promoted by the singles "Handmade Heaven", "Superstar", "Orange Trees", "To Be Human" and "Karma". In addition, the release includes a second collaboration with the group Clean Bandit entitled "Baby". Luis Fonsi also appears in the song.
In February 2020, Marina released the single "About Love" from the soundtrack to the film To All the Boys: P.S. I still love you, and in November, the first teaser of the artist's fifth album, the song "Man's World", appeared. Ancient Dreams In A Modern Land premiered in June 2021 and is further promoted by the singles "Purge the Poison", the title song and "Venus Fly Trap". The lyrical layer of the album touches on politics, climate change, feminism and the mistreatment of women or LGBT+ people, while musically it is described as a mix of indie rock, electropop and dance-pop [footnote needed]. In January 2022, an extended version of the album will be released, enriched with several additional tracks, including the single "Happy Loner".
Her earlier stage name, "Marina and the Diamonds", consisted of her first name, the conjunction "and", and the English translation of her last name, which means "Diamonds" in Greek. Even though "the Diamonds" was sometimes mistakenly thought of as a sign of her musical support, it actually referred to her fans. She explained this fact on her Myspace page as follows: “I am Marina. And you are diamonds."
In the second half of 2018, she officially announced the change of her stage name to MARINA.
Marina often analyzes elements of human behavior in her works. Her musical style includes not only keyboard-accompanied ballads, but also up-tempo new wave derivatives with full musical backing. According to her, such musicians as Daniel Johnston, Blondie, The Distillers, Patti Smith, Tom Waits, Nirvana, PJ Harvey, Kate Bush, Britney Spears, Yann Tiers.
