Chris, this is a very good video. I very glad you posted it. A marine repair center informed me yesterday that this is what needs done to my starboard engine (454 Mercruiser). They found intake leak on #6 and #8. It's been experiencing rpm loss (always after about 1 hour of continued cruising). What would you estimate that a good shop would charge to do this job? I'm currently waiting for their estimate. I would have loved to do this myself if I had the time and boat wasn't 300 miles from home.
That varies greatly depending on shop and area. I live in WA marine shop rate could be anywhere between $120-$150 per hour. Plus the cost of materials for a 3 hour or so job you could be looking at $600-$800 give or take. Now that's just a rough estimate based on what I did. If they find more things wrong as they do the work the bill could increase
Hey Chris, did you consider blocking off the exhaust crossover port? I was discussing with a marine surveyor about an engine with a similar issue, it was running about 700f in that same spot that it was bright white and hand burned off the paint. The recommendation was to block off the crossover knowing startup might be a little harder in my region (WA) but it was worth it for long term performance. Not sure if closed vs open cooling made a difference. Great video btw, very informative on the process and guaranteed to be an excellent resource for someone to come.
That's not a bad idea, especially for someone who lives in a warmer climate I don't see the harm. Unfortunately this isn't my boat so I don't get to make that call.
@@christopherjpeters 1995 Crusdader 454's. I have the general maintenance and trouble shooting manual, but not the full shop manual that would get into details such as torque specs etc.
