Marine conservation plays a critical role in preserving biodiversity, protecting ecosystems, and ensuring sustainable livelihoods for coastal communities. With marine ecosystems facing increasing threats from pollution, overfishing, and climate change, there is an urgent need to raise awareness and take action to safeguard our oceans. In India, marine fisheries contribute significantly to livelihoods with an estimated landing value of ₹58,247 crores in 2022, providing livelihood and nutritional security to over 28 million stakeholders. However, only 5% of coastal and marine areas are designated as protected, highlighting the need for enhanced conservation efforts.
The Indian Government has implemented extensive measures to address the challenges and protect marine biodiversity through a range of legislative and policy initiatives. The Wild Life Protection Act of 1972, The Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) notifications of 2019, the Biological Diversity Act of 2002, etc provides comprehensive legal protection to marine animals and also aim to preserve ecologically sensitive areas by restricting harmful activities. These efforts are crucial in safeguarding our marine ecosystems.However, despite these measures, marine life continues to suffer from severe pollution due to various anthropogenic activities.
Consequently, to address these critical issues and discuss strategies to mitigate pollution and enhance marine biodiversity protection, Sphere India is hosting a session titled "Marine Conservation: Efforts and Urgency in India" from 03:00 PM to 04:30 PM on June 5th, 2024, in observance of World Environment Day.This session aims to shed light on the pressing need for marine conservation and highlight ongoing efforts in India to address these challenges.
