I went thru Parris Island in 1968. We didn't have this then. All we had was the `confidence course`. This looks like it would be kinda fun.

It's fun to watch the fuck ups. I'm probably in them. I learned that it can be fun in practice but not outside the wire.

Went down this exact tower in jrotc. Scariest thing You’ll ever do is getting in that L shape. After that it’s not bad. Done it multiple times before with real harnesses, that rope harness they construct for you leaves you wishing you had a little more support, but they know what they’re doing.

In 00 I said sir this recruit is afraid of heights and the instructor proceeded to slam is fist into my chest pushing me over the edge. Instantly the fear was gone and I went down. I wanted to do it again. I was also wearing two right handed gloves. I just made it work. It was amazing and I wanted to go again. That day we had the females beside us and a girl fell off. That day I learned that a human body does bounce a little.

Trust the process and follow the instructions. The instructors know what they're doing; these are tried and true methods. As long as you focus on remembering the instructions in order, you are good. It was on this tower that I really had to understand that. As a person, I was not confident in my ability to wrap a rope around my hips and repel down a tower with very little in the way of instruction; I thought there was no way I'm doing this correctly. But then I realized that the Drill Instructors trusted the process and trusted that I wouldn't screw it up, and that was the confidence I needed. While I wasn't sure, THEY were sure, the PROCESS was sure, and I had to rely on that external surety. This became a major thought transformation for me.

Can anyone name the belay method? I call it the "Marine Corps Barber Pole Belay" given the rope winding around the biner spine. I can't find a formal name for it, but I consider it the ultimate ultralight belay method. Kills the munter, which prematurely wears the rope.
@gregoryfoster2547
@gregoryfoster2547 4 месяца назад
In the early 60s here in the Pacific NorthWet Seattle Mountaineers called it "carabiner wrap" or "carabiner rap". It was hard on ropes twisting them, making them hard to handle.

Yes. We wanted to be aware of the recruits who are not comfortable with heights so we could pay a little more attention to those particular ones.

Where that attachment point is now, is cheating. When I went through, the darn Rope was attached to the Deck. So when you went over the edge to take-up slack.....It was a doozy!! You went from standing straight up, to 90degs instantly.

@JohnSmith-ip8oy
@JohnSmith-ip8oy 2 года назад
Nah, this video is not accurate at all. They have cameras on em . There was so much slack at the top , when I leaned back I went straight to the ground , couldn’t stop myself . My drill hat at the bottom had every bit of his weight on that rope to slow me down. Best rush of my life!
@MsLemon42
@MsLemon42 Год назад
I also saw someone free fall. Similar to the other person, the Drill Instructor ran the rope out (away from the tower) to prevent a totally vertical descent for the recruit. If you don't follow the steps exactly, you can end up falling.

Where’s the forward “helo” jump? Training today is definitely not the same as in the 80’s. This is baby shit training......
@MsLemon42
@MsLemon42 Год назад
The repel tower has two separate repels. One is the one we see here, and the other is the helo speed rope (gloves and inner boots holding onto the rope, and you speed slide down...this is probably the one you're talking about). I went through in 2005. So you're right in that this isn't the same training as in the 80's...there's more of it.

Same. Had a few kids in my cadet battalion hanging upside down. First time I went as a freshman, I was pretty overweight and it scared the shit out of me. 2nd time as a junior I had been rappelling every year at our summer camp so I was used to it. Also had shed the weight, so that helped. Lmao
