In this video, we look at Marine Electronics ahead of an upgrade on Allegra. We look at how this kit works, how it might be connected together and offer some advice on how you can work out what systems you have aboard your boat and where might be a good place to start when it's time to upgrade.
The video covers the basics of NMEA 0183, NMEA 2000 and Seatalk networks and how you can identify some of this equipment.

Brilliant, read up, bought equipment, planned on upgrading my system on a 1987 Moody 31, then a heart attack, which gave me more time to reasearch, plan, & educate myself. thanks for sharing👍

Hi Mark, many thanks for your comments and I hope you are doing well recovering from a heart attack. I think it’s good to install these systems yourself, they aren’t as complex as they first seem and then you are also able to fix, add and also save some money on installation costs. Let us know if we can be of any assistance and good luck with your project. ⛵️

Great explanations. As the owner of a new (to me) 1978 CHB with 46 years of modifications this grounding on networks and standards was perfect as I begin my upgrade planning. The current radar unit is a "green screen" so I have a ways to go :)

Thanks for the great video! I have an even older Raymarine MFD, but otherwise the same layout, and this helps a great bit.

Thank you for the info and links. I had to rewire my Seatalk 1 NMEA0183 plotter & found it a steep learning curve. I bought a ST60 Multi to do the conversions & give me data down below, but had an issue I think is a "data loop" so only have Plotter -> Radio & Seatalk at the mo, but that gives me DSC & Autohelm Track functions :-) Good luck with upgrades!

Yeah, I did the same when I sent data to the C80 for AIS. When I first set that up, the Pi was sending the same data via NMEA and the display also had Seatalk and it wasn’t happy. I’m guessing the multi unit is just decoding everything and sending it out. If you have a spare usb-serial converter you could take a look on a pc or even on a Pi.

Great to watch thank you , trying to do the same on my aquastar 27 , not sure if I can connect the ST 7000 to the new axiom 9 rv , or axiom 9+ at the moment it’s linked to my C80 . Stew , wadebridge.

Hi, thanks for your comments. It looks like it's seatalk so some connection can be made. I can't control mine directly from the axiom, I have to activate/standby from the head unit. I believe you can send it a track but I've not actually tried that since I installed it. You might need a seatalk to seatalkNG converter and then I think it depends on what else you have on that old network if that's worth the investment, if that's how all your other data gets across then like I did, it's worth it

@@BoatingwiththeBaileys many thanks for your reply , there was a speed -log and a depth also a small Raymarine 158i gps , also an analog radar , I’ve removed the speed/log transducer and fitted a pair of RV 320 transducers to go with the new 2 x 9” axioms , think I’ll run it all as two separate systems for this season as no funds left for a new radar at the moment . 🥟 stew .

Sounds like a good plan. I still haven't replaced my analog radar, i went with an upgrade on my AIS first. I think i need to do the same and start replacing my older ST60 units before i purchase a radar.

Hi, Nice job and very helpful video! I'm about to go down this road myself with an upgrade from C90w to a Axiom + 12. What is your verdict on the integration between the MFD and autopilot? can you control it from MFD or only the Autopilot panel? Iknow the newer autopilot computers allow for a control panel on the MFD as an overlay. good job and keep the videos coming! =) thanks!

Many thanks for your comments on the video. Unfortunately my Seatalk autopilot is not compatible with the Axiom in terms of controlling it from the MFD screen, the Raymarine forum says it will do Go To but thats about it. The Axiom so much easier to use that the old C series, its like night and day. This is the line from the forum: If you want the Autopilot to follow the route which is now active on the MFD - you will need to engage AUTO on the legacy autopilot control unit, (for example p70/p70R / ST6002) and then select TRACK mode, after you have acknowledged the FOLLOW TRACK alarm, the autopilot will then follow the route on the AXIOM to the target waypoint.

@@BoatingwiththeBaileys Thank you for your replay. That is my understanding as well, and that the best way to communicate with the course computer is via NMEA 0183 rather than ST to NMEA converters. I have a slightly different setup with a Type 100 course computer that have Nmea 0183 as well as seatalk. I will do some test in spring when everything hopefully is installed. thank you again!

I have the same Seatalk network. Since everything is working and the pilot never failing I changed the MFD to a 57D which use the same protocol. I dont think its a good idea to mix protocols.

I don’t disagree with that, however at some point the switch has to be made and it’s either a big budget or you keep trying to find replacement equipment which isn’t new. That alone can present its own issues, but I do agree with the principle 👍

1. Nice 101 Nice Vid... However: After your last vid 3 weeks ago speaking OpenPlotter 3 I wonder where you are heading. Is mixing technologies to your current "degree" really OK. What about KISS?
@BoatingwiththeBaileys
@BoatingwiththeBaileys Год назад
I think I will always have a foot in both camps if I’m honest, I’m not ready to ditch all the mainstream stuff just yet but my OpenPlotter setup adds great value and will continue to do that in what I have planned. If anything I will be removing items that I’ve had to add to make my older electronics to work. At the moment I’m having to convert data types and I plan to do less of that with a move to NMEA2000

@@BoatingwiththeBaileys Thanks for your vid's incl that _"open"_ reply. ;) 👌 _Engineering blunders I'll never forget:_ that one single *-* (...yes one single "hyphen" in (conversion) math code) killed Mariner 1 and NASA lost 7% of it's budget (1Billion current US$ Venus remained unseen) Mars _"couldn't be orbited"_ (by Mars orbiter) because Lockheed Martin only "spoke" _inches, feet, and pounds_ . My rule: Don't do conversions ;) - build new, operate new&old independently ...and get rid once proven.😉😇
