So it's a armored vehicle with twin 120mm mortar tubes. The tubes semi Auto Loaders are hand loaded, one round at a time from inside the vehicle, then the round is brought up by the auto loader and hung, then dropped by mechanical means, leaving the crew safe from counter battery inside the armored vehicle. I was in a (120 mm) mortar platoon when I made my military duty. Mortars fire with high elevation which makes the grenades fall in from top. Terrain elevation is no problem at all. Grenade launchers (in our terminology) fires at a flat trajectory. Howitzers are somewhat in between, but they are all totally different weapons all together. Mortars and howitzers are indirect fire weapons where the mortars have the shortest response time, but far less range than the howitzers. I don't know how "far up" you must go to request a fire mission from each type, but I think the mortar platoon is "closer" to you as a company or platoon leader as far as command goes. Grenade launchers are a platoon asset, like "light" machine guns or designated marksmen.

120mm mortar system. Grenades may be different in translation. The AMOS and NEMO mortar systems from Patria are also excellent automatic systems that have TOT capability. TOT allows the mortar to fire about 3-6 rounds that can hit the target at same time. This is done with a computer system, adjusting the elevation and using different propellant charges. This gives the enemy very little time to take cover. The mortars can also fire guided rounds with HEAT warheads to destroy armored vehicles. The AMOS has long, twin barrels. The systems have also been adapted for boat. Sadly these weapons systems are very expensive. A few million dollars each. The rounds can have a range of 10km. At very long range TOT is not possible. These are devastating NLOS systems. 40mm grenades are far less deadly. If they kill you they are just as deadly from your perspective. But 120mm rounds carry much more explosives and shrapnel over a wide area. They can also fire phosphorus incendiary rounds and rounds with proximity fuses. Proximity fuses can detonate a shell before it hits the ground. At a meter or two above ground shrapnel can damage a much wider area and also into trench systems more effectively. Phosphorus rounds are incendiary weapons that can also be used to create smoke or mark targets. Smoke and marking shells are legal if they are not being used to kill people. Because phosphorus is a chemical, many people consider it to be a chemical warfare weapon. There are international agreements not to use it as a weapon. Phosphorus is certainly a very horrific weapon. But is it an incendiary weapon or a chemical weapon? With a guided HEAT round, the 120mm mortar can be an excellent anti tank weapon.

BAE Systems plc. is British, having subsidiaries in many countries, of course the biggest in the USA. Swedish BAE Systems AB (AB = Ltd/Inc) is mainly a hub between the British BAE Systems plc and BAE Systems Bofors AB (mainly canons/weapons / Archer etc) and also BAE Systems Hägglunds AB (mainly vehicles / CV90 etc ). Bofors and Hägglunds cooperate a lot, and you can find that what vehicle or weapon each of them has made, the other has a part in it. Bofors and Hägglunds are legendary in the Swedish military industry. Bofors originates from the Iron mill 1646. In the 1870s they started to experiment with canons. Not until 1878 a prototype worthy a presentation to the Swedish military, and 1884 Bofors and the old canon producer Finnspångs Bruk shared an order for the Swedish military. Since then they have been a loyal supplier to the Swedish Defense. Hägglunds has an interesting history with twists and turns, also many different owners through the years. They started making wooden furniture just over 100 years ago, went on to making bodies to buses and cars just a few years later. (The bodies were mainly made from wood back then.) Some turns later they produced airplanes, electric engines and trains. (That part was later incorporated into ASEA) In the 1950s they took some baby steps to develop vehicles to the Swedish Army, started with a reconstruction of a combat tank to Bandvagn 301. They produced many other metal things too, anything with hydraulics or electric engines. They developed Infanterikanonvagn 91, and 1969 the prototype was delivered to the Swedish Army. In the 1970s they developed Bandvagn 206/208, the Swedish Army ordered totally 4500 of them. Bofors was owned mainly by Alfred Nobel (dynamitthe Nobel Prize) between 1894 to 1896, when he died. In 1898 they began to produce unpowder and explosives too. "GRANATKASTARPANSARBANDVAGN" Granat kastar pansar bandvagn Grenade launcher armored tracked vehicle (To have a laughter, the literal translation: Grenade thrower armor band wagon.)
@Avpixlamer
@Avpixlamer 8 месяцев назад
Granatkastarpansarbandvagn just translates to Grenade Throwing Band Wagon. In Swedish new words are created by just stacking old words together in a row. It's very convenient as one can accurately describe practically anything with just one word - but with the disadvantage that the words may become quite long. The Swedish army then abbreviates these long words into something like GRKPBV. This creates a lot of abbreviations like, for example, GRBR describing the color "gråbrun" (gray brown). This goes on and on and military jargon just becomes a long row of abbreviations.

the 90 is most likely for the year they decided that it would work, swedish military works according to a overall plan like the swedish base 90 for the airforce wich made the distributed airfield system to be fully operational at 1990. so the plan was most likely for the GRKPBV 90 to have been induced into the 90 rework of the swedish military plans, it wasnt feasible until long after that but still is included in the 90 moniker.

Basically means Grenade-throwing armored tracked vehicle. We don't usually put four words together in Swedish. It's much more common in german. Two words together is normal in Swedish. Three happens. In this case you have two combined words put together. 2+3, Granat+kastar+pansar+band+vagn. And the two combined would be granatkastare which means grenadethrower and pansarbandvagn armored tracked vehicle.

I was in the mortar section of an armored infantry company in the Royal Danish Army in the 1980s. We drove M125, which were essentially M113 with a slightly different configuration. In the back was a 81 mm mortar, so quite a bit smaller than this. It was comparable in many ways, yet a lot less sleek. However, we had the same ability to move around and get in firing positions really quickly. The target time from being on the move to be ready to fire from a two pipe position was 90 seconds, but once we had the drill down, we routinely did it in about a minute.

Mortar units work moving all the time. 120 mm are used in a sector about 1.5 km square with multiple prepared shooting positions. Otherwise they are mobile in the sense they follow the front and position at a distance that allows good coverage ot the front line without getting exposed to counterbattery fire, this also implies movement. The solution now is the mobile mortar unit such as Amos by Patria, Cobra by RUAG or the swedish proposal as in this clip.

There are so many variants to the CV90s right now and you got a few more being planned/worked on One of my favorites would probably have been the CV9040/56 which would have been equipped with anti-tank missiles but sadly if never made it past the prototype stage as there was some issues that were never fixed For this variant of the CV90 I think it came from another idea the CV90 AMOS which was a joint project with finland for a mortar system on vehicles and while it was tried on the CV90 none ended up being purchased and I think it later turned into the one in the video Plenty more variants are probably gonna be made with it becoming even stronger each time, looking forward to it

With text added to the video, at 7:47 the soldier speaking on the video says (wrongly translated) "During the winter, the play is not really affected by the climate, which makes it very reliable...". Here the Swedish word "pjäs" has two distinct translations. The first is indeed "play" meaning a theater play about something, but the second meaning is some sort of heavy ordnance, weapon or heavily built thing, etc. So, keep that in mind.

BAE Systems AB is a Swedish defence company and a subsidiary of BAE Systems Land & Armaments, whose ultimate parent is the British defence contractor BAE Systems. The company is a holding company for Land Systems Hägglunds AB and BAE Systems Bofors AB, and has no products of its own. BAE Systems Hägglunds AB Hägglund & Söner was founded in 1899 by Johan Hägglund in Gullänget, Örnsköldsvik, Sweden. The company was divided in 1988, one part being Hägglunds Vehicle AB, the military vehicles business. In October 1997 the British company Alvis plc acquired Hägglunds Vehicle AB to form Alvis Hägglunds AB. Alvis expanded its military vehicle business in 1998 with the purchase of GKN's armoured vehicle division in 1998 and Vickers Defence in 2002 to form Alvis Vickers. In September 2004 BAE Systems acquired Alvis Vickers and merged it with its RO Defence ordnance division to form BAE Systems Land Systems. Hägglunds was renamed Land Systems Hägglunds. In June 2005 BAE Systems acquired United Defense and reorganised its land systems businesses into BAE Systems Land and Armaments, with Land Systems and Land Systems Hägglunds as subsidiaries of this U.S. based operating group. BAE Systems Bofors BAE Systems Bofors AB, located in Karlskoga, Sweden, is a Swedish subsidiary of BAE Systems Land and Armaments. Its corporate heritage goes back to Bofors, which was founded in 1646 and entered the Defence business in 1883. In 1999 Saab purchased the Celsius Group, the parent group of Bofors. In September 2000 United Defense Industries (UDI) purchased Bofors Weapon Systems from Saab (the tube artillery interests), while Saab retained the missile interests. In 2005 BAE Systems purchased UDI and re-organised all its land systems businesses into BAE Systems Land and Armaments. As part of acquisition Bofors Defence was renamed BAE Systems Bofors. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BAE_Systems_AB

Today it's not about not being able to be detected, it's about not being there when the return fire comes in. Have no clue about the American system, but the artillery radar in Sweden is really good. Edit: Oh, and another feature is that it has a staggered salvo capability. I don't recall the exact number of grenades, but it can fire e.g. 6 grenades with different elevation e t c that all lands at the same time.
