So glad to have Sweden join NATO!!! Their contribution to air & naval security of the region comes as greatly welcome and important! The awesome Grippen!!! Might have known that Saab would be capable of super engineering and technology! Learned to drive at 13 yr old in a 60's model Saab three speed on the column. Great car in the snow of Maine as it was probably the first front-wheel drive auto in the US!? Engine weight over the drive tires, SMART! And speaking of smart, indeed a country of only 10M has accomplished much, given the opportunity to have done so! World Class!!!
As an American, i get tears in my eyes thinking we could be closer partners with Sweden in facing this huge threat to freedom and democracy. I have always loved the Nordic countries (raised in the Norwegian Lutheran Church in America in the 1950's) and felt Sweden was the best of the best in terms of values. (Oh...and i drive a Volvo!).
I love Sweden, my girlfriend is from Sweden and she now lives in the UK with me. When I stayed in Sweden with her family its awesome to see how much of a well developed country Sweden is and being a frontline in innovation with such a small population. It truly is remarkable.

The fact that a swedish financial minister is capable if insightfully citing "the rust belt" and the its causes in reference to his own nation is inspiring more faith given to the potential success in thier NATO bid.

They are strong, democratic, peaceful, and free-market nations which share so much with everyone else in the West. It's time the free-world unites in mutual defense against naked aggression from large autocratic countries who have old world and outdated "spheres of influence" mentalities, not least of all that "might is right".
The Swedes have a first class military, and they possess great technology. They excel at developing anti-tank wpns systems eg NLAW- developed with the UK. They are a very welcome addition to NATO indeed. Great to have the Swedes on board!

To uphold the previous Swedish military doctrine of non alignment, a lot of effort was put in having a strong defense. For a long time Sweden had the worlds fourth largest and powerful air force. Sweden also had a very serious and far gone nuclear weapons program during the 60s and early 70s. The official story is that the program was ended because of shifting public opinion on nuclear weapons, partially because of events like the Vietnam War and the Cuban Missile Crisis. To this date a lot of information concerning the program remains classified. It therefore doesn't' seem entirely unthinkable that Sweden could have been a nuclear power at some point. It was a Swedish airforce Saab made Viggen fighter plane that holds the title of being the only aircraft ever to get a successful missile lock on a united states airforce supersonic Lockheed sr71 blackbird reconnaissance aircraft.... impressive!

Sweden has made well engineered military weapons for a long time. At one time no country could make an anti aircraft machine gun of the performance of the Swedish made Bofors 40mm. All combatants in WWII wanted it. It became the armament of choice of the US Navy shortly after the US joined the war.

It is not really going that well though. We have nuclear power that doesn't add to the CO2. Instead of maintaining that power, our idiot green party made sure to close down 6 out of 12 reactors before the new green solution is in place and is tested. This means that when the wind isn't blowing, our windmills stands still and then we have to turn on an Oil-based Powerplant that burns over 100,000 liters of Oil / hour to stabilize the electricity in southern Sweden. That Oil-powered powerplant is spewing out CO2 and the electrical bill goes up skyhigh because of this. So, as an example... one day when the wind was not blowing, the electricity price went up 13.000% Yes.... That is 13 THOUSAND %. If the green party hadn't forced to shut down those 6 nuclear reactors, we would not have had to burn Oil (add to the CO2), and the electrical prize would have been stable, even with the war in Ukraine. So no, things aren't looking that good.
Finland does have the more ambitious (2035) carbon neutrality target though. Marin's government was actually slightly ahead of their roadmap even before Russia started the energy war on EU.

JAS was especially developed to take out MIGs, so they bring something else to the table to what US planes does, maybe not better but different. The more tools there is in the toolbox the better.
According to the Russian side, Sweden’s JAS-39 Gripen-NG has absolutely no chance to win an air battle with its Su-35 and Su-30SM fighters. According to Russian experts “It should be remembered that Sweden has not achieved any significant success in the development of fighter aircraft, although it has access to advanced electronic warfare (EW) systems.”
No doubt about it, the Gripen is one of the finest fighter jets in the world today. Not the stealthiest nor the fastest, but cheap to buy, cheap to fly, and simple to maintain for an aircraft that is deadly in a fight.
The Gripen E/F is very stealthy, not in the same fashion as the F-35 which uses airframe design shape and special radar-absorbing paint to remain stealthy, but by scrambling and jamming sensors, essentially a flying hacker. It's able to use targeting of one plane to target a plane that's out of reach normally too so one plane could fly close without giving itself away while feeding targeting data to it's buddies further back to act on. What it lacks is the size to perform larger scale bombings due to it being small and single-engine, but the extremely short turnaround time is supposed to make up for that, it already has a longer range than the F-35 (and is able to use drop tanks because that doesn't adversely affect it's type of stealth unlike the F-35 where if you fit equipment on the outside it negates it's stealth).
Agree. It is supposedly so simple to handle by ground crew, that the job can be done by just normal conscripts. The whole idea of the Swedes is to take advantage of them pretty much living in a big forest, so their planes can make due with just roads and does require a massive setup to operate. I wish we had went with their planes here in Denmark instead of the F-35.
@@Rikard_Nilsson Yeah, it's a considerably better fighter than the F-35 in all sorts of ways. The question, as always, is what kind of war are you going to be fighting? In modern air combat stealth is REALLY overrated. Comparing the Gripen E/F to the F-35 is not really a fair comparison anyway. To either aircraft. The Gripen is a better comparison to the F-16 C, which has a more comparable role.

How would they compare in a head to head vs F22/F35? Maybe that's an overly simplistic question for those who know about these things but just curious. I assume they wouldn't fare very well overall, but relative to other countries AF's the euro fighters would do extremely well?
@@dreamer6737 Thats true, but the russians know that the minutte they try to launch a nuke in anger, they are destroyed as a nation!!Nato and the US would make russia a giant wasteland of radiation....So they would not dare to do that, unless they have a deathwish.
@@dc2778 I guess it comes down to if they can detect them. Gripen is unique in that it is equipped with and can use several of the different systems used by other fighter jets seamlessly. It can get coordinats from other tracking systems and use it (I believe 360) and over horizon, making it possible to fire flying in another direction and out of sight. But they would still need to find a stealth jet, that's usually easiest when you stand in front of it. 😂
This made me proud of my country and our finance minister. He hade many good points and he was as forthcoming as possible the interview. No nonsense talk or talking a lot while saying nothing at all. Makes me feel good to be a part of all that as a Swedish citizen. Good news
As an American , it's absolutely fantastic that Both Finland & Sweden are looking to join NATO and I Definitely hope that they'll both win there bids to join. Matter of fact I know they will. If Turkey wants to block them then they need to be over ruled or potentially looked at as needing to be removed...
@@nabiyev Nope and you know it! Even though it sounds democratically correct it works like this: All NATO countries gotta approve of a new country/member/ally to join. Erdogan is allowed to use this NATO rule as blackmail material to get what he wants from Sweden. Knowing Erdogan it doesn't even seem likely that he would approve of Sweden joining even if he got all he wanted and more. Come to think of it, I think I will name all my Rogue/Assassins etc in games to Erdogan :)
@@dongarippo7279 Not necessarily. There hasn't been a NATO member who was removed but it doesn't mean it can't be done. It is legally complicated but there have already been calls for Turkey to be at least suspended by quite a few member countries that are tired of Erdogan's duplicity and underhandedness.
Love the SAAb Grippen a beast I know Landing on highways and roads is very tricky, and takes great skill, but Seems Highly strategic for maneuvering and easier to hide
@@jorgenmansson4269 But mainly it is the aircraft that is designed to land on a road. It is reinforced in similar ways to US carrier jets, just because it needs to hit the ground fast and at a high angle of attack. If you try this with another fighter, the F35A for example, it would break in half.
@@benghazi4216 Yes you are right, most of the Swedish fighter jets you see landing on roads is not the JAS GRIPEN it is the old DRAKEN and VIGGEN , they are strong enough to land on roads
"...technology from IKEA......" .....wtf....what technology...??? ...are you smoking something heavy stuff....??? ....and by the way IKEA is not a Swedish company - it is Dutch.... - it has been so for something like 40 years since the owner Ingvard Kamprad (...and with him the company) left Sweden for avoiding Swedish taxes. Himself moved to Switzerland. I have no idea why Swedes are so proud of tax refuges who does not contribute to the Swedish society. Still both the Swedes and IKEA pretend it to be Swedish.....
Im Swedish but ehm... IKEA? Not a good comparison unless you want to assemble all equipment yourself and find out that parts are missing lol. Sweden is great, IKEA is great cause of its affordable furniture's as long as you can keep your temper and frustration when you put em together :).
Sweden is considered a country equipped with very advanced technology. If we can compare to the Russian technology in terms of military machineries the Russian technology has a lower quality.
@@internetvulture9250 The only countries buying inferior Russian military equipment are third world despotic regimes, who can't afford quality gear from western countries.
@@mannyc4224 Are you on crack? You must be brainwashed from Fake News CNN .Crimea, Luhansk, Donbas, Donetsk ,Mariupol already in the hand of the Russians are not wins?, they already have the territories that they came to Ukraine for.
I like his confidence on his country's goals and how he still shows his transparency of worry to the real threats they could be faced with. God help them all
Agreed! Doesn't stop there, TPB, highest tier fighter jets, submarines, rifles, A-Ts, the GPS, Bluetooth, Dynamite, the Zipper, Safety belt, ball bearing, ultrasound, pacemaker etc etc. Bless you Finland, fucking bless the Scandinavian peninsula, it's a haven of invention. Much love from Sweden!!
@@jackbananas3204 nah man, not really 😅It was initiated & developed out of Lund, Sweden. If you're referring to Dutchman Jaap Haartsen he was indeed dutch but simply an employee helping inventor Nils Rudbeck, CTO @ Ericsson Mobile in Sweden at the time 👍 Here, you can read its history yourself: en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bluetooth
@@isubtothebest6020 Lol, no they're not. Considering Sweden is a country of 10 million yet single handedly designed a 4+ gen fighter. Meanwhile India, a country with a 130x bigger population and many times bigger GDP can't even develop their Tejas without substantial Western help. China the same thing, they have 150x the population size and by far the biggest GDP on earth, yet they still produce inferior fighters, the performance of their jet engines sorely lacking and not producing the required amount of thrust.
@@pieterveenders9793 China currently is developing 5th gen aircraft, they already (though problematic) J20s. They seem confident enough on their new engines to install them on their latest variant of the single engine J10C. Their Flanker jets have domestic avionics and potent bvr capabilities. I know the "anything China makes is trash" mentality is still strong in the West but underestimating them is a terrible mistake. Prepare for the worst, see them as a rival capable of fielding potent weapons and advanced technology, this way you won't be caught off guard.
@@pieterveenders9793 well, none of the recent Saab jets have been developed _single handedly_ by swedish engineers. Since the Viggen in 1967, the US and UK have been involved as well with engine and radar equipment. With the Viggen the US reliance became a problem as the US blocked them from being exported to other countries.
Worth noting about those planes, the people needed for the basic servicing ie. refueling and rearming don't need to be specialist as they are made so just conscripts can do it. Also it really makes for planes that can do a lot more than others with relative little demand for ground operations. Their planes are really designed for their country and it is similar with some of the other weapons they make, like tanks meant to take advantage of there being so many forrests in Sweden and the subs which while conventional are so silent they best anything else there is.
And lots of good reasons why NATO countries should buy some Gripen E/Fs. As the plans to assemble them in Lviv are clearly not currently possible, Sweden should strongly consider supplying some to Ukraine in the meantime, along with the necessary support and training. Being modular in nature, they can incorporate as much NATO capability as required, and be updated to full NATO compliance after Russia's terrorists are kicked out.
Anyone who understands modern warfare will appreciate the military capabilities of these two countries. Russia would not last long against either of them.
As a Swede in stuned of how fluently our finance minister spoke. I also think all answers representet how the majority in Sweden look at these questions.
That's actually quite brilliant -- to be able to land or take off away from a "base". I don't know that it would even be possible here in the US, since almost every road needs work before it could be used in such a manner -- in our country, there are 5 seasons: winter, spring, summer, autumn, and orange barrel.
I agree. Obviously, their air force is organised on a strategy of dispersing into small ground units servicing a small amount of fighter jets at many locations simultaneously. It's a brilliant concept born out of necessity.
We have four seasons in sweden winter, spring summer and autumn. I have been stopped a couple of times when I been driving on small roads on the countryside. Military polices standing with signs and stoplights when the fighter jet start or land. It takes only a couple of minutes and the road are clear to drive on again.
