This week’s Urban Valor episode features Marine veteran, Aaron Rodriguez. Aaron was assigned to Marine Wing Support Squadron 371 during the Invasion of Iraq in March of 2003. While convoying supplies near the city of Nasiriyah his unit was ambushed with heavy enemy fire. Shortly after the ambush took place, they realized Marine, Sgt. Fernando Padilla-Ramirez was missing and had been captured. Aaron speaks about his frustration with their commander deciding not to go recover Sgt. Padilla and the toll it took on his unit. Eventually, Sgt. Padilla’s remains were recovered by 2/2 Fox company, part of the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit at the time.
This interview is powerful, as Aaron is an intelligent speaker who really delivers his memories with detail and emotion making you feel for him and his unit during the time Sgt. Padilla was captured, as well as numerous other moments in this interview.
As we always say, the courage it takes to sit in the chair with Urban Valor as a military veteran, whether it be a combat veteran or not, or whether the veteran is a Marine, Army, Air Force, Navy, or another branch of the Military.
As a combat veteran, this Marine experienced much there is to experience in the military. His story is a true testament to the courage and strength of the military. We're honored to hear Aaron Rodriguez's story and learn more about his experience in Iraq. We share his story to raise awareness about the effects of combat, the decisions and hardships military members face while serving, and also to detail more information about the Invasion of Iraq, War on Terror, and the sacrifices of the military who served during these time, as well as other wars and time periods.
Please share and donate to help us continue to provide military veterans with the resources they need to share their stories and help others learn about the military.
Our website, UrbanValor.com is under construction, with our hopes to launch during the new year. Our goal is to begin traveling or funding travel for Veterans to enjoy a Los Angeles vacation on us, and share their stories with them and their loved ones. When we begin accepting donations, 100% of donations will go to Veterans and/or highly researched and reviewed Veteran charities, with 100% financial tracking available on our website.
We will make an announcement once our website is live and we're prepared to accept donations for Veterans in need!
In the meantime, the best way to support out Veteran interviewees is to watch our videos, listen to the Urban Valor podcast, and engage with our videos and posts across social media.
Many of the Veterans we interview check in on their videos and the comments, so please show your love and support, ask questions, or just give thanks under our videos!

The fact these videos only get 54k views is beyond me. I just cannot stop listening to these. It’s such a mixed bag of some funny moments, bitter sweet, frustrating, sad and downright nightmarish stories. Very brave for these guys to come on here and share and to also be professional about it. I hope these men truly find peace within themselves. What kind of CO agrees to a 250 vehicle convoy through previously hostile areas, especially a single lane each way bridge??? Did I get it right? Hindsight, I get it, but is foresight, and intuition, and on-the-ground warnings, with no air support, is this what we call leadership? What was the objective if not just the arrogance of the leadership thinking..."We are big and bad, we'll impress them with our guns and vehicles?" Catastrophic bad mentality, and piss-poor-planning! I was a Marine with MWSS371 re fuelers and knew SGT Padilla, he was with Motor T. Listening to this brings it all back. I was driving one of the tanker trucks that pushed through with team Charlie. There were also allot of rumors as to what happened as well. Some of the stuff he mentions I had never heard. Jumping out of my truck into fighting holes as we started taking fire that night. The Army had just been hit a few day prior to us getting there. My cousin was Air Force and yes we Marines lived in the dirt and not allowed on the Air Force side real quick. At one point in the video they say the medals were political. Officers got together and agreed to recommend each other for medals. There is another video with an enlisted man who was on Iwo Jima. His unit had a pfc who had been wounded 3 times in charge. He refused to evacuate despite the wounds because the privates needed leadership. That man got no medal other than 3 purple hearts. It didn't just start this century. It's always been that way.

former 0311, i have a love hate relationship with my time in. loved the guys i served with but my command was probably one of the most toxic commands in the marines at the time. i wont name it but things happened during about a year and a half period that changed how the entire marine corps treats limited duty, injured marines and marines getting medically seperated....they showed more hate and disdain for guys with injuries (both physically and mental, especially mental though) just straight up shitting on guys with issues and who were trying to get help. we were trained not to even treat captured enemies that badly. our first sergeant recently passed away due to natural causes and every single guy i served with who served under him as our first sergeant, every single one of their reactions was the same "good fuck that guy" ...THATS how you know you were a pos leader is that when you die nobody mourns you they just spit on your grave and say good, im glad, that guy was a piece of shit. as a side note, i know its easy for me to say it now, but i deployed to iraq, al anbar fallujah, i can tell you right now that if someone from my batallion went missing or if someone from my platoon went missing and we were told to stand down i can firmly say thate veryone would say fuck you and go...i know its different because you were in the invasion and i cant imagine how crazy it was but just hearing that your commanding officer said to stand down makes my blood boil. i hope that guy has all the worst things happen to him during whats left of his life

Wow, this brings back so many memories. When we arrived, the camps looked like something out of that show MASH. Tents up, everything jerry rigged, and gravel everywhere. I remember hearing about that prostitution ring too. I was over at Tarawa in Camp Coyote in Feb of 03.

Because if it were under your own volition that you didn’t appear at a formation, they’d crucify you. I feel that in that case this organization has a duty to go and bring you back, because that’s what they would do if you left to desert. You can’t say “oh well it’s no big deal because there’s a big bad enemy in front of you”.

I know it was a tough call but we have a motto and they should have held to it. No matter how many lose their lives in the mission they still have to do it. F Hollywood. That CO was wrong he will live with it worse than anyone of the troops under him who suffer from that memory. I was in the 4th MEB in the first war. The Iraq invasion whole war was mismanaged. Rumsfeld F it up sent only 180,000 troops. I remember the years before the 2nd war in Iraq was kicked off in Iraq an army 4 star general in front of congress asked how many troops to take Iraq he replied 480.000. Rumsfeld sent less than half that number and so never secured the cities and borders etc.... It took a troop surge years later to stabilize the war. We had double the troops in the first Iraq War and we didn't even invade Iraq we just kicked them out of Kuwait and circled into lower Iraq for a little while. They totally f up that war like Vietnam war with politicians and politically correct figures making the calls. DOnt be dishonored by what happened my brother you can hold your head up its that co who has to live with it not you. Wait until we get into a real all out war where our people are being killed in bombings etc... and all this politically correct way to fight a war goes out the window. In ww 2 USA would just execute germans or japs when they surrendered because war changes people into a different type of person and the libs dont understand what it does to people when there fighting for their lives.

This is the problem with modern vets, the Vietnam guys will tell you straight-up they’re a lowly bus driver or heavy equipment operator and be proud of it, not curse obsessively bc they lack depth and breadth of vocabulary and admit openly they were scared shitless. Many of the modern warfare guys think they’re all SEALs or SF that know better than everyone else. Very little humility.

Contrarian viewpoint, in the terrible reality of a wartime event, especially in a piss-poor-planning wherein the Ground Troops rightfully advised the convoy, basically, we are outnumbered, outgunned, who told you to cross the bridge without aircover or tank support, etc? Yet your convoy attempted to cross the bridge, and met ??? immediate fire and attack by the enemy. Result, one Marine is missing. And the person in charge makes a calculated decision, we are in a disaster situation, we have one Marine missing, our convoy is 250 vehicles, loaded with supplies. Can we limit this catastrophe to one Marine? Horror!
