Very good info & your explanation in Laymans terms of system is great. Thank you so much. Yes I would really like more videos showing and explaining how boats work / operate (like the upper & lower units)

@@Schneids15 You're welcome. Hey, could you give me your guess on a problem that just showed up this past weekend with my boat? I have a 2001 Mercruiser Alpha One outdrive and a crazy thing happened. I have a water valve near the engine compartment that switched between a hose connector and my livewell. I was using the hose to "swab the deck" and the hose connection to the backside of the valve, inside the engine compartment, sprung a leak at some point and was spraying my engine while running. Not knowing this at the time, we proceeded to cruise around the lake after we were done with the deck wash and then anchored in a cove for 45 minutes or so. When we went to leave, the engine started missing and sputtering and when I accelerated I got a loud bang as it apparently backfired. I immediately throttled back and idled it back to my dock. Twice while idling back, it surged and when I attempted to throttle it back, it was stuck in forward. So, I immediately turned the key off. Then it started fine and I continued to idle back to the dock. The missing and the backfiring I understand are probably from the water spraying on the distributor and or plugs. Once this dried out, that problem seems to have gone away. But, what would cause the shifter cable to lock in gear? At first, I thought maybe the large backfire maybe damaged the exhaust bellows, but that seems to be fine. Any ideas? This has stumped a couple other mechanics and I thought I'd as you since you seem very knowledgeable.

Great informative video, thank you. ... To replace the drive seal as preventative maintenance, must the engine be pulled? I just purchased a 98' Cobalt with the 5.0 EFI and maintenance wasn't their forte. Thanks.

Hey Adam , the drive seal as between the drive and transom assembly? No not at all. That is common maintenance and easy to pull.

Appreciate the info your sharing. The tech videos really interest me.I am buying a 96 glastron with the 4.3 inboard/outboard.As far as preventative maintenance goes, what would you recommend. Is there a way we can grease the brgs.or other parts from the outside or other things we can do prevent premature wear on the sterndrive.

Hey Thanks so much! Yes so when the drive is removed you can grease the U joints on the older models. I forgot to mention on the video that on the far right of the transom assembly down low just about at the transom there is a grease nipple for the gimbal bearing.
