A symbolic gesture to honor his buddies sacrifice for their country. Bitter sweet and emotional that it dropped him. I hope he found peace and closure.
From a UK vet you epitomise what it takes and means to be a part of the military family, rip your fallen comrades and to all those who gave their lives so we could live free
Raven Wood - I totally agree mental health is extremely important. But if this guy knew what running 26.2 miles was going to be like, what happened to his training? Plus I agree with KC Diaz, that good eating habits & nutrition are also extremely important and these lead TO good mental health. If he truly did not prepare (training and nutrition), then all that does is lead to poor mental health. Those who have hope, are optimistic, and of sound mind most of their lives usually have better eating habits & nutrition and more than likely, exercise on a regular basis. This guy is supposedly only 31 years old and an (ex-) marine. Something is amiss with his whole picture. Even on his after race interviews, still something is amiss.
As every suzie “I train collies on the weekend” and joe “make sure you properly sort your recyclables” in the Boston area casually crosses the finish line behind him. 😂😂😂 thanks for the show chief
Actually there were several middle aged collieists and recyclers who passed him in this clip alone. No telling how many blew by him while he was waiting for the camera person to set up.
the shire man not sure what the drama was. He was in one millionth place, he could have stopped and rested a few minutes then walked across in better time than pretending coming in on his hands and knees showed fortitude.
So many angry, bitter, and jealous comments. What a horribly sad world we live in. Great job to all those who would ever attempt such a feat. Semper Fi Marine. God bless you.
Its because we live in a world of fake people. Whats the point of living if we have to fake who we really are, what we really want to say, how we really want to act.
There's nothing heroic about asking any woman to marry you at a baseball game. That is a recipe for disaster, and I don't wish rejection in a public setting like that on even my worst enemy.
@@coachcarter8238 Uh, yeah, that's my point. That should be obvious. But all it is playing for attention. There was zero need to crawl. Just slow to a walk.
Wait Carlos is from the year of the bombing, I’d recognize that hat anywhere. The grit some of these runners have is amazing. Being a Bostonian these stories make me proud to see this race bring people together.
@@HoloScope I don't think Josh meant to be negative or rude. He just meant that at the end of the race, all parts of your body hurts, and crawling is just as equally painful as walking to the finish line. I can say this because I have finished my second marathon last Sunday ago.
I'm probably naive, but I'm sorry for those commenters who cannot believe someone would be this driven to reach a goal. Remember the original Marathon, Phillipides ran the length from the Battle of Marathon with the Persians back to Athens, relayed his message of "Victory!" and collapsed dead from the strain.
@@phunkboxx it's probably a legend, but if you read the whole story, he had done several lengthy runs prior to this final one. I know full well the human body can only stand so much, and recent medical science bears out that long distance running can have long term consequences.
@@jenniferwintz2514well as long as you know full well. I'm just saying it's not that amazing of a feat to complete a marathon. I've done 4 of them under 3.5 hours. I applaud his focus and dedication to his comrades.
Seriously!?! He crawled 4 miles on his hands and knees!?! How raw and bleeding would they have been?? Plus that would have taken hours.... this was grandstanding. Sad when a 70 year old can make it across upright and not a marine!
@@TheHydro. I did it dumbass I have run it twice first time in the same heat. At 8 miles I knew it was going to beat me up. I walked when I needed and took hydration. I passed many red bib people while doing it who allowed testosterone to run their race. He ran too fast and only got in trouble the last mile and a half. Look his information up on the Boston marathon results site. His splits were way too fast for his qualifying time and bib number. He pushed too hard and was not a wise thing to do and it has been known to kill people. He absolutely did not crawl from mile 22 or even the last mile and a half which took him 38 minutes. Walking briskly would have been about 24 minutes. Slow walk 31 or 32 minutes. Crawling 1.5 miles would take you an hour and a half and you could not have finished in 3:38 like he did.

Not courage. Stupidity . He could have easily finished 20 minutes faster if he had paced peopler unless the goal was to finish for the cameras. If he wasn't in shape Newton would have taken him out at the pace he was running. Brains win wars not cannon fodder.
James Patterson no, I love to see people staying strong and committing to things. If you think he’s faking it, id like to believe that someone would never do that. I like to stay optimistic.
@@matthewparry4295 Look, I have osteoarthritis of both knees. I experienced lite-weight "locking of the knees." Not sure that is what happened to this dude, but one never sees a marathon runner crawl on his stomach to complete a marathon. If one is seriously struggling you stop, catch your breath, keep pushing, stop, catch your breath, etc. His display was attention gathering, nothing more, nothing less. What an extremely bizarre coincidence that he had the little trinkets of his fallen comrades attached to his body & shoes? What a coincidence that he began to really struggle near the end of the race where news cameras would be rolling? All seemed too convenient, almost scripted plan to draw attention to himself. I'm NOT buying it for ONE minute.
Props for him but just wondering if hes injured or just run out of gas? I mean he was crawling to the finish line while the rest were just finishing the race like a jog in the park. Need to check hes DD214.
I'm confused about so many things in this report. First of all, you have to run a qualifying time in a prior marathon, so how can Boston be your first? And how do participants qualify that need a cane? Is there some way to sidestep the qualification process?
There is also a lottery for people to enter to get admitted to this marathon (and others as well, I think), plus I believe you can donate a certain amount of $,$$$ to get entered & run.
And the Academy Award for most overly dramatic performance goes too...This guy! Only thing missing was the Chariots of Fire theme playing in the background.
@Seriously Malfunctioned.......Be a good boy and head back to Letchworth village ; they've been waiting for you for 23 years. I've seen better heads on a glass of beer.....
1. THAT is your definition of a man? What about it was manly, not training enough so that while elderly ladies zoomed by he "had" to ostentatiously crawl for the camera? 2. Why are you the arbiter of what is manliness? Oorah
I want you to physically feel what it is like to run a marathon . A) Go to the gym B) Get on a treadmill C) Set the pace at 8 mph I'll come back to get you in THREE HOURS FIFTEEN MINUTES ! !
You figured it out. Look at his splits they are public. He may have a real cause. He should not have been invited to run NYC. I have run 10 marathons and qualified for Boston 3 times and still can't get into NYC and he runs a 3:38 and gets in?
The crawling guy could not have possibly crawled from mile 22. He finished in 3:38 That is an 8:19 average pace. If you walk fast you are lucky to make a 15 minute pace. His splits were all fast until 35 K then he slowed down and took 38 minutes to get to 40K after that he was a little over a mile from the end. It took him 34 minutes to make that last mile and a half. He was beat for sure. His reason for going is admirable but him crawling at the end was because he ran too fast for his condition and got caught up in the moment. People end up in very serious conditions from doing that. That is not how you should finish a marathon. Too risky.
The old school marines would have crossed on their own two feet not on their hands and knees like a dog. Some of Today's marines are really soft and week. #drammaqueen
Im thinking the same thing. I ran marathons. Yes it's long and you have to train. But he's a Marine. My dad was a Marine. Those guys are supposed to be the toughest. But they say his legs did lock up. His time is still pretty good for someone that had to crawl to the finish.
PRINCE 88 eighty-eight exactly why I gave this video a thumbs down... sure it’s a long run, I can’t do it, but a marine.... crawling across the finish line so dramatically while everyone else just runs right past? But prince.... he so stopped his watch so dramatically 🙄 what a hero. RIP to his fellow marines though
Advance Porygon-Z he actually didn’t stop working out, and according to the Marine, running was his way of both moving on from the tragedy he experienced nearly a decade ago, and to honor his friends.
I’m not understanding how the Boston Marathon can be someone’s first marathon.....ever. I thought one had to qualify from timings from previously run marathons. I’ve been running 1/2 & full marathons for 20 years and can barely, barely qualify for my age group, meaning I could never qualify for the Boston Marathon and a few others. I absolutely admire AND respect the military for their devotion to fellow comrades, but something doesn’t sound right with this particular situation.
He ran another marathon in Ohio. Got his BQ the first time. This was a stunt. Look at his splits in the results. He was great up until 40K then he took 34 minutes to finish the last 1.5 miles. Keep going at the attempts Rusty. Here is a secret that got me there 2 times and most likely another one coming then I will stop in hopes guys like you get the chance. Don't be a slave to the training plan, never run long s runs fast, that is what short runs are for. Run the Erie marathon flattest one out there with a really high 42% BQ rate. Good luck.
He should've run without that black cap or at least a lighter and more bright colored one. It keeps his body from exposing heat, plus it absorbs sunlight and makes even hotter.
Olivia Cohee - I would have to say that those rules have changed. It used to be the rule across the board several years ago in all the running races I participated in (and that’s been 20 years worth), but as more & more people broke that rule, I guess change was necessary. Judging my just completed 2019 ‘Rock the Parkway’ 1/2 Marathon, I’d say that at least 50% of the runners had some type of device with headphones, earbuds, etc., attachments. Actually the one annoying runner didn’t have ear pieces and the audio voice was rather annoying as it spoke every few minutes the stats of where he was & how he was doing. It took me a couple of miles to get away from him.
JayBoi Nike - Actually, it was more like somewhere between 40-75 yards, depending on who’s leaving a comment. 4 miles was the original said distance. At that pace, he would’ve finished after dark.
Rusty so yeah he knows the eyes of the world are on that finishline and figures I’m gonna get down and crawl the length of a football field....people eat this shit up! I know I sound cynical but come on? He couldn’t have walked it? I must say thank you to the marines and to him for his service and very sorry for his loss. But cmon
Wow amazing But with all due respect can someone help me understand something. Why did bis legs give out if he was a marine. Don’t take this the wrong way he did an amazing job I was just confused and was kinda hesitant to ask but I decided to ask
He either didn't train properly, pace properly or fuel properly. My advice would be to stop where you couldn't run any more and come back next year. It is a running event!
Stunt to get attention for his cause. He trained just fine. Look at splits in the results. He cranked his way all the way until mile 24.7 Then he got really slow. I have no doubt he trained very well but he didn't repeat the heat. Personally I don't fuel during a marathon. I have not found anything that my stomach agrees with.
