The Marineland Magniflow 360 Canister Filter is designed for aquariums up to 100 gallons and filters 360 gallons per hour. I bought this filter for my 75 gallon aquarium in my living room. This is an unboxing and setup video that steps through all the parts and shows how to put it together.

Two days ago, I cleaned out this filter for the first time since installing it 2 months ago. It wasn't clogged up or anything and remember that the other filter had been running side-by-side with it the entire time so this one could get cycled. I replaced the polishing pad because I found that you can't spray these out - they just start to shred. I also removed the carbon because I was about to treat the tank for parasites since I decided to treat all 10 aquariums and zero-base everything. (No more fish will be brought in without quarantine!) I had no problems putting it back together and it started right up. In fact, I didn't put any water in it before reconnecting and when I connected it, it filled itself with water from the tank.

Well, I guess on my last cleaning, I let one of the bio balls drop into the tube system that runs between the baskets. At first, it was OK, but the ball became plugged. I found today that there was very low output from the filter and it was making wooshing sounds that canister filters make when clogged. I went to clean and inspect and found the ball in the tube of the 3rd tray down. When I put it back together and connected to the tank, it was like turning on a firehose again! My fish love high flow!

We also took your advice on not filling the filter with water. Using the prime button just wasn't as effective as using the old suction method from the tank.

Awesome video! Thanks for taking the time to make it! I didn’t read through all the comments, so someone might have already suggested this. Before connecting the hoses, put them in a bucket with hot water. This will soften up the hose enough to easily slide onto the canister filter and intake/output ends.

That can be a nice feature. There are pros and cons. As long as you never break the syphon, it doesn't matter. When your tank is bottom drilled, you could have a leak and drain the entire thing, but it gives you great options for a sump.

Hi, I got this filter and was watching your video for assistance. Do I need to fill the canister with water before plugging it in? I know typically that's the case with canister filters but this one doesn't mention it in the instructions and I didn't see you do that. Is this what the button is for...?
@FishyReview

It will be a lot easier if you fill it first. The red button should let you start priming the filter but may or may not work depending on your situation. I show the button in action towards the end of the video.

I have had mine for a little over a year and I feel like it's not pumping the correct amount of water, any suggestions?
@FishyReview
@FishyReview 3 года назад
Have you cleaned off the impeller and the housing where it sits? Mine has been running since I made this video and still pumps well, even with the intake somewhat blocked by pesky java moss. Have you thoroughly rinsed out the foam? Have you replaced the polishing pad? In canister filters, it's tempting to rinse out the polishing pads but it's best to replace those because they can become more clogged than they appear.

Fill the canister with water first to speed things up and make sure the red button is getting pumped well. You should see some water start to get pulled down the intake tube. Also make sure the intake tube isn't sucking in air anywhere.

How do you feel about it now compared to the Filstar XP4? My Rena/API Filstar XP4 (XL) is sucking in air (seal leak somewhere) so I am looking at the Marineland 360 or a Fluval replacement. I did buy a reseal kit for the Filstar several years ago back when I purchased the XP4/XL because they were no longer being manufactured but I am not feeling confident about replacing it since it isn't a solid piece. I will give it a try though. I have trouble accepting the price of a Fluval, and it seems like they have way too much sponge and not enough media space compared to the Filstar. I love that Filstar. My old Magnum canister filters lasted forever, and I still use a Magnum 350 micron polishing after gravel vacuuming so I am a bit brand loyal. I worry they're not as good as they used to be with this new design. So few people seem to use Marineland and the Rena/Filstar products so I was really intrigued to hear about your experience.
@FishyReview
@FishyReview Год назад
I loved that Filstar filter. I think it's quite comparable. Mine was the XP3 and it was sucking some air towards the end as well. The only thing different really is that the 360's intake clogs easier and that's because I have a ton of plants in there. It's no longer the "tank where plants go to die" and it's been making a comeback. So I have to monitor the flow and then clear the intake when it stops up. However, it has worked great as a filter and the tank has a heavy fish load, but they usually don't get fed every day
@MsFawndles
@MsFawndles Год назад
@@FishyReview Thanks for your reply! Well my 360 arrived yesterday so I guess I'll give it a try. I have a heavily planted 55g corner tank it's going into, but I plumb my intake into an undergravel filter riser so I never have issues with clogging, hopefully my unique filtration serup will avoid that.

I've had this filter running for about 2 years and noticed a decrease in flow then alot of noise. Took it apart and one of the impeller viens was hanging off. I have been trying to find an impeller for the last to months without any luck, no help from customer service. I'm gonna go out and get a fluval fx4 and see how that goes. I'll wait until I can get a backup impeller and use the mag.360 as a backup.
@FishyReview
@FishyReview 3 года назад
Yikes. I see what you mean. I tried every way I could think to search for this and can't find the right impeller for this, except from Marineland, who shows out of stock. Maybe it's like a lot of things that are hard to get since Covid started and hopefully this part can be ordered in the future.

Either the impeller is somehow in there wrong, or more likely it’s still not completely primed. The very first time is a little hard. Fill the filter completely with water and try to make sure the air is out of the intake hose.

@FishyReview

I would call it silent. This is why it’s on my 75 gallon tank in my living room. HOB filters would make too much noise for my liking since it’s right next to where we sit. It will make a brief sloshing noise several times a day when it needs to be cleaned or if the intake is clogged up.

I just posted my follow up. No leaking for me but, yes, I've read those reviews. I also talked to the local shop and they have 5 of them set aside because they had to take the disconnect assemblies out to service customer tanks that had leaks around that area. Parts are backordered for months. If I can get my hands on one, I'll disassemble it and see if standard o-rings or silicone grease would fix it, but I'm not touching my perfectly good one!

@@FishyReview yeah both that I ordered unfortunately leaked from the in and out ports on the canister and from the out port where the hose connects to the outflow tube. @@FishyReview I found this vid of yours when looking to "Future Upgrade" for a canister when mine finally fails. I currently run a "Cheap" Aqua One Ocillaris 850. And so far it has done me fine. I looked to a few differing filters and the Magnaflow has been one on my radar. What makes me feel unsure is both the price and the bad reviews that I have seen online (Could be a few bad units, I just don't know). Looks like a well made unit, but the only problem I have with it is the media which is supplied with it. Firstly, the sponges supplied don't seem fine enough. I'd have expected a rough sponge to catch the detritus, then a finer sponge for the BB. I do however like the Bio-Balls and Ceramic Rings (looks like there are plenty given). However, I would have set it up with the rough sponge and a finer sponge in the lowest chamber. Then followed by the filter floss, and more floss added (fully fill that chamber with floss). The third with the Bio-Balls. The fourth with the Ceramic Noodles. And forget about the Carbon altogether (Unless you feel the need for it), but the carbon should be placed last (top chamber) in the line which the water travels. Still holding on to the fact that this is a great canister, just needs a few tweak's with the media placement and it will be fine. It's in my list still... Would love to know how it is doing after a year or two, and if you have made a change to the media placement and grades of sponges. Great vid though, keep doing what your doing!
