just recently bought this filter for my freshwater 30 gal and the water just overflows near the intake section inside the filter instead of flowing correctly through the filter pad and out the bio wheel. there’s nothing clogging the filter and it’s brand new i’m not sure why this is happening as when it was working fine it cleared up my tank amazingly

If you remove the filter pad, does the water flow correctly? If yes, then maybe that pad is defective somehow.

I have the same problem as well (I think ) but I don’t know for sure is it suppose to flow out both sides

Mine does the same thing as well. Guess there's a flaw in this system for a lot of people having the same issue. I know that we tend to buy more garbage these days as things are made like garbage and it costs double for this garbage. I'm one that is so sick of buying junk these days and paying big money for it. We the consumers have to start hitting back somehow. it's sickening to say the least.

I think it’s time for some troubleshooting. Does it overlow when there is no filter pad? If no, then the filter pad is clogged and either needs to be rinsed or replaced. If you rinse it, it’s not going to get clean enough unless you have one of those sprayers at your kitchen sink or hit it with your garden hose with a sprayer on the “flat” setting. Water only comes out the smaller overflow side if the filter pad is clogged. The filter may clog faster than you think. If it somehow overflows with no filter pad then it’s time to get a flashlight and look in there to see why.

Do you have to put both filter pads? Or one should be okay?

One is just fine. Putting 2 gives you the chance to change one at a time and keep more beneficial bacteria.

Yes, that one and several others are working. I had one fail the instant I plugged it in, but Marineland replaced it.

if you mean the gray flat one then yes that fits anything that takes a rite size c filter pad including the older models.

is it necessary to put the bio filter in chlorine?? i got a 75 gal filter one and it didn’t come with those instructions, just wondering if it’s different but that also seem off..?

You don’t put the bio filter in chlorine. If you buy the add-on micron filter and use it then you will need to clean it with the bleach and water mix like I was talking about. The bio wheel should never be cleaned unless it gets super gunked up and then you should clean it in de-chlorinated water.

Wait, the direction of the media pad is inconsistent with how their instructions show it. The blue cotton/mesh should be facing forward. Why do you show different??

I just reviewed the video and looked at the instructions. I was afraid I'd put it backwards and hadn't noticed. But the blue part should definitely face the back. I also don't see where is shows that facing the front in the instructions. The pictures in in the instructions show the plastic part facing the front. Also, that's consistent with how it would be on any other HOB filters I've ever seen. I'm not sure it would actually matter, though.

Looking like the cartridge filter n media basket have shrunk in comparison to my Emperor 280. Plus now instead of the media basket being included, you have to purchase it extra or separately.!! Of course.. just like everything else, products shrink n prices go up.

The Emperor 280 and 400 and the new Emperors have always had larger cartridges than the Penguin lines. They’ve also been that size for many years. Penguins take Rite Size C and Emperors take E.

Some of these features are just ridiculous. Why would the water hit a micron filter first? Water should hit a micron filter after all other types of flitration you might be using.

Yes there really should be a sleeve around it. I think the idea though, is for polishing and short term use so in that case it's OK if you hit the micro filter first.
