My dad was in this landing before Saipan and finally, Tinian, where he was wounded, the second day, I think. His Saipan invasion map is in a Marine museum in San Diego. It was left on the ship when he was wounded and it was sent home with his stuff. He spent months in the Oakland Ca. hospital before getting a medical discharge.

One large smoke ring and I think I'll just wade ashore. Guess his floating tank didn't float. What amazing footage.

My father was there. Served in the Marines. Served in the Central Pacific Area from October 30, 1943 to October 30, 1944. Took shrapnel in left arm. He participated in Capture and Occupation of Kwajalein. Recipient of the Purple Heart.

Did he land with the 23rd Marines on Roi or with the 24th Marines on Namur Island?

At the 6:23 mark on the reel, I believe this is the Japanese torpedo storage area that was set off, by mistake, using satchel charges. Sadly, twenty Marines died and another one hundred wounded from this.😔

Great footage is like being there with them. Never noticed before how baggy the marines trousers were in the lower leg. They looked like a damned well organized and capable invasion force. Wouldn't want to be their enemy.

When I was a kid, I had a pair or two of those trousers. Old neighbor guy gave them to me. I had to roll'em up, but I wore them all the time. Cargo military style. I was still wearing them in high school, and that was in the mid-90's. I didn't have to roll them up then, and they fit perfectly.

Wow. These are the same Marines which would fight the battles of Sipian, Tinian and Iwo Jima. 4th Marine Division. There was a huge munitions explosion during this battle.

Yes, 20 Marines were killed and it happened on Namur. Watch Richard Sorenson's Medal of Honor video (about 6 minutes long) and he talks about that briefly

The dungaree trousers were full cut in the leg. The scenes where they appear baggy above the shin is where they’re using dull yellowish colored canvas leggings. The footwear at the time was a pair of low cut brogans, so leggings were necessary. My dad told me, in Korea the Chinese didn’t like to fight the “yellow legs”.

Some Marines are still using the old 03 Springfield bayonets, all 6 and a half feet of it.
@CFarnwide
@CFarnwide 3 года назад
That bayonets were fixed gives you a sense of what they were expecting and it probably wasn’t a tickling match... 😱 I would have thought they would all have the same weapons (for the most part) but I clearly saw the 03 Springfield, M1 Carbine and Garands? 🤔

A couple of views of that enormous explosion. Was that the torpedo storage bunker that they assaulted and blew up without knowing what was inside? I don't recall if that was on Kawajalien. It killed a lot of Marines.

Why the hell doesnt have sound?
@Douglas.Scott.McCarron
@Douglas.Scott.McCarron 6 лет назад
Because there was no audio recording device I suspect. They didn't have easily portable ones at that time.
@geraldjohnson4013

+Douglas Scott McCarron this was shot with a 16mm camera and they didn't have audio. Note how other documentary footage of World War II will have rifle fire, explosions and a narrator but none of the soldiers, marines, sailors and airmen having sound from their mouths. That's the sound affect.brought in later.

This video needs no sound, Nely Ramirez. You'd know that; you'd feel that if you had a shred of gratitude. But I feel sorry for folks like you, and I truly want to help you become a better person. Hey, we all need to be better people, right? Okay, so here's the deal: I challenge you to sit back, shut up and quietly watch this video ten times, back to back. If you know the feeling, or even the meaning of empathy, then try to muster some up as you watch what these guys were going through. Try to imagine what sounds they were hearing. You can do it - you've seen war films before, and know how they make explosions sound, right? Then try to imagine those explosions being hundreds of times louder, overwhelming your hearing enough to cause excessive ringing in your ears. Sounds start to become more muffled, but not enough to drown out the sudden gurgling, gasping sounds your buddy, lying next to you makes as he struggles for a small draw of air through the blood pouring from what a piece of shrapnel left of his face; and the constant whoosh and BOOM of incoming mortar shells, as you try to make yourself flatter and flatter against the razor-sharp coral you're laying on, waiting in terror for YOUR piece of shrapnel. Finally, try having to carry those sounds in your head for the rest of your life, never being able to forget, like the Marines in this video who made it home have done. Maybe, just maybe if you have the courage to honestly carry through with this challenge, then hopefully you'll actually experience gratitude; you will FEEL it. And then, Nely Ramirez, you will know in your heart why this video needs no sound.

Please, tell these men the horrendous time you've had in the last two years, having to wear masks, being home with food delivery services, one thousand tv, movie and sport channels, cellphone and internet access to facebook, twiter, tiktok, amazon, netflix, HBO, Disney and literally a hundred other things. Please....go ahead and tell them how much YOUR life sucks.
