@@joecalhoun6476 by that I assume he means Usher was already an established artist while Mario was up and coming. Usher could afford to let that record go as oppose to Mario who needed it to blow up
Just found out today lol Usher passing on the song made sense it sounded very teenage young puppy love vibes. Usher was 20 something he needed something grown to match his progression as a young man, U Remind Me was the contrast to Just A Friend....
Usher was 24 and singing about being just a friend would have been going backwards after being this big time player and shit personally I think usher would have been too old to be singing about that but 24 isn't old but considering usher was in the game since 14 that just a friend vibe wouldn't have hit the same coming from a "grown man"
Yep. I remember they put that Pop Ya Collar record out by Usher, but it flopped badly. Just A Friend would've did the same. Those records were too bubblegum. He needed something more grown up, but still youthful after the success of the My Way album. 8701 ended up being a masterpiece.
My thoughts exactly this was Ushers first true mature life song and Mario needed an innocent breakout single. The industry promotes there can only be ONE mentality but brothers There's room at the top for all of us.
I love how it worked out perfect for both brothers. Usher had a mature hit for him and Mario had an innocent breakout single. There's Room for everyone.
U Remind Me sounds much more mature and was def a better look for Usher being on album number 3. Much more interesting theme behind the song as well. Just A Friend worked great for Mario given his age at the time and the sample giving new listeners some familiarity. win win on both sides tbh
Usher wasn't feeling it and truth be told Mario did it better because it fit his energy better and he was hungry to break out with a banger. That song feel like it didn't fit Usher's album either.
Oh wow! Usher sounds good singing it. I love how he turned it down and Mario picked it up and we all fell in love with him. This is an amazing story! I love both Usher and Mario. Both have amazing vocals! ❤️
Definitely a more mature approach for Usher and I’m glad he chose the route he took, cause “You Remind Me” is still one of my favorite songs and videos til this day. Mutually, I believe “Just A Friend” was the perfect introduction to Mario, and I’m glad it worked out for him in gathering that younger audience and generation.
That worked out perfect for both of them because they both were hits I was about 9 years old when they both came out and the effect it had on school kids was enormous!!!
He looked out for Mario true enough but it turned out to be an even better decision for himself. You see how doing good for another fellow man turns out?!
Man I can’t tell you how proud we were of Mario here in Baltimore from coming out of Milford Mill High School (even though it my was schools rival lol) to shooting his first video here in Bmore to really making a success of hisself.
