Honestly I think if you look at it as more of a water tutorial stage (which I always felt it was), I don’t even think it’s a bad level. It’s a safe box to practice swimming in. And yes-the vibes are unreal.

I think it does that for the same reason that the metal cap level drops you into the moat from a waterfall and that dry dry dock includes a random door that leads to the lake.. It provides the illusion that the levels arent disconnected locations but part of a greater interconnected world. It may not seem like much now, but im sure plenty of kids were completely amazed when they fell off the level only to end up outside the castle, as if the level had been located just above their head all along.
16:23 I am 90% convinced that the line of coins there is a (poor) indicator of the red coin hiding there. It would have been 10% better if it was an arrow of coins instead (like the one that appears in Whomp's Fortress on its arrow-shaped floating island)

Yo, thanks for covering the Bowser levels! I didn't expect the other bonus stages, so that's a nice Bonus! 11:17 one odd detail with the rising platform is that (I think) there's a glitch in the Wii virtual console where it rises up *very* slowly, but won't go back down after a while. Nathaniel Bandy did a whole video on it, leaving it on for a long time, seeing how high it'll go.
And that glitch is necessary to beat the game in 0 A presses, which means that the Wii VC version has a niche over the original Japanese release in that regard.

The most interesting thing about the bonus stages is how they’re separate from the other levels. They often exist in bizarre voids that might be connected but often feel random. The strangest ones are the Peach’s Castle areas, which seem to take place in pocket dimensions somehow related to the castle.

There was a lot of thought that went into the aquarium! The secret aquarium was there to teach the player how to swim, and to teach the player that the game had secrets. Before this game very few people played anything that was 3D, and there wasn't a lot of information on where to find game secrets (unless you bought a physical guide). So, developers had to design that information into the game without making a literal tutorial or words for explanation. Remember: in the 90s, games like this were designed for children.

the vanish cap makes you invincible, so if youre rushing to the switch and ignore the red coins you can see that the fire and amps dont hurt you. going for the coins first makes the level more challenging on purpose cus then you have no invulnerability for the fire, but in exchange you have a shot at getting a star.
0:48 It makes sense to put them in the main level tier list to me. If you just rank how good/fun the level is and how well it’s doing its job/role in the game.
Actually I kind of like the aquarium stage because I think of it as like it's not as bad as dire dire docks and also I think it's just a needed break in case someone that needed like a slow paced level after doing like secret slide
Man, it would have been cool if you also included the extra bonus stages from Mario 64 DS, like the areas where you unlock Mario, Luigi, and wario, as well as that one random one in the courtyard, and the silver stars on the isle.
Something I think could be worth noting here is how 64’s bonus stages have a tendency of being similar to Super Mario Galaxy’s shorter Galaxies, at least for the first game. The main difference, aside from what’s actually featured in each stage, is that Galaxy’s main stages only have six stars (two of these have seven), only five of which are original missions, meaning that to match the amount of Stars included in 64, Galaxy needed to have *13 more bonus stages than 64 does*. I’m not sure if that’s a good or bad thing.
Can relate on the Wing Cap stage struggles, I always just flew right onto the tower and hit the stage without even trying to get the coins because I'd have so much trouble with them LMAO
Personally, I like that Bowser can teleport in the Fire Sea boss fight. Ever since the manual of the original Super Mario Bros, Bowser has been claimed to be a sorcerer, but we really don't see very much of that. I think Nintendo should lean more into Bowser's magical abilities.
I really enjoy the rainbow bonus stage. The falling to the beginning is frustrating, but it only takes me 1-2 attempts to get so it doesn’t bother me that much
That red coin in Bowser 3. Sometimes you are supossed to look for things, so you would think "In the big open area, there's gotta be a coin around here."
They should really have a marker on the menu that shows you which bonus stars you have. I've replayed a LOT of bonus levels since I keep forgetting if I completed them yet.
Thanks for putting Wing mario over the rainbow higher up. Yes it sucks that the stage puts you outside of the castle if you fall down but the level itself is solid and its a true test of the wing cap. Maybe if the game used the wing cap in a level thats on the top floor people might have got more used to it but alas it's not the case
Another sm64 level comparison can be between bob-omb battlefield, whomp fortress, Tall tall mountain, and tiny huge island aka 4 outside levels with the same theme
Only bad part about the bowser fights (especially sky) is how much you have to spin bowser and how fast he has to be spinning to hit the bombs. that messes up your controller big time if youre playing with an OEM N64 controller
About that one hidden red coin in Bowser 3, I would like to assume that Nintendo inteded the row of coins on the main part of the platform to be an indicator that it's there. Otherwise, if it really was just meant as a safety net in case you fell, wouldn't it have been much more logical to make the coin row go towards the platforms that you can use to climb back up?
The vanish cap level should’ve been like the igloo in Snowman’s land; getting red coins by going through walls to show what the vanish cap actually does
I personally kinda consider the aquarium to be somewhat of a swimming tutorial and it functions fine as one, but yeah it’s not very interesting even if you consider that

I fully agree with the Mario over the rainbow criticism of being kicked out of the castle when falling out, but then why did you not say the same for the metal cap stage? You also get booted out of the castle, and you not only have to get back to hazy maze cave, but also to the bonus area again, making it way longer and difficult avoiding all the obstacles
You have to be TRYING to fall off on the metal cap stage. There is so much land to catch onto next to the flowing river that I think it’s a non issue and a cute little Easter egg
8:59 Now that you mention that, I think what they should have done to make sure you could see the use of the vanish cap start out with its effects is they could have put one of those red walls of bars that you can run through right there at the top of the slide so that you would have to use the vanish cap and run through that right away. That is also no problem if somehow you're too dumb to do that, because you could just press the start button and accept the course if you somehow didn't figure that out.
For awhile I was confused about it too but I think I’ve figured it out. If you go inside the cage, but didnt have the star spawn, and then let your cap run out you’d be trapped. So the hole gives you a way out if that happens
I completely forgot how bowser's lava laur worked because the only time I played the game seriously, I used Kaze emmanuar's mario 64 odyssey mod and violently cheated the whole level (like many others) I shouldn't be surprised to suck that much at the game after that one...
Wing Mario Over the Rainbow deserves to be in F-tier for more than the falling back down to the castle grounds problem. It's the worst bonus stage of Super Mario 64.
Wing Mario over the Rainbow is very bad, but Pachinko and Lily Pad Ride make that SM64 stage preferable. Pachinko, Lily Pad Ride, and Corona Mountain; the last of which is not a bonus stage, are the worst 3D Mario stages of all time.
