To Celia Goldberg: A restaurant is not the best place to rain down discrimination due to the owner, for when the worker's sue -- it's the end of the whole business. Eateries are too mom-and-popish to survive the big hits. When the workers complain and repine -- they lick themselves! (Pardon the pun.)

I worked for a restaurant chain. I was sexually assaulted by my boss. I went to the regional and national heads of the restaurant chain. I was eventually fired as a “troublemaker”. Two years later the restaurant boss was successfully convicted of sexually assaulting teens who worked for him. The company claimed they had never been contacted or were made aware of any misconduct by this person. It was a complete lie and incredibly insulting considering I had approached them years before and went through all the right channels to seek assistance. Bosses take advantage of their positions because young adults and adults alike rely on the financial aspect of employment.

I see many comments attributing part of the problem to the restaurants not having an HR department, as if that would have made much difference...!!!..It is an overly optimistic view to think that having an HR Department would have made much difference. The simple fact is that in both private business and in government, the primary job of the HR department is to protect the Boss..!!! And the HR is happy to hear the complaints so it can be reported to the Boss and allow strategies to make life difficult for the employees. More often than not, the head of HR, in both private business, and especially in government, are delighted to go to the Boss and present themselves as the protector of the Boss to get higher salary and bounces. In short, the very existence of the HR often fools the employees to believe that they have a safe place to complain about abuse...!!! It is sad and pathetic.

I lived in NYC in the early 2000’s and worked in the upscale restaurant industry. I knew a girl back then who had been harassed by Batali while working at the Spotted Pig. Am kind of amazed that it actually finally came to light. This is the norm rather than the exception and is rarely acknowledged. Sad.😢

This is the case with most high profile figures. It was an open secret about Weinstein way back in the early 2000s. Everyone knew about him, you didn't even have to be part of the Hollywood scene or an insider. That's why it's so eye-roll inducing when you hear famous actress' feign confusion and shock at the accusations....they all knew and they all allow it to happen because that person has power and influence.

I worked in the service industry from the age of 16 to 36 and I have had more sexually inappropriate things said to me by men in positions above me than anyone should ever have to endure. The problem is that server staff are easily replaceable and if it's a restaurant where there is money to be made, there is always someone waiting to be the replacement. So if someone speaks up, they will likely be fired for some bogus reason. And may in fact, have a very hard time getting a position in another restaurant in their area. Everyone knows that managers of different establishments hang out together, party together, speak regularly, and often blacklist employees that are "problematic". As long as restaurants are allowed to continue to pay their serving staff and kitchen staff such low wages, this will continue. There's so many problems with the service industry this is but one of a million.

It will end when we are 100% intolerant of this behavior and these people are treated as the criminals they are. No amount of money or “stature“ should save these people. They need to stand trial and be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. To anyone chastising women for not speaking up in the moment have no concept of what women in these circumstances deal with…

I once had an owner at a restaurant where I was working fire the chef on the spot because he brought a new server to a party at his house where she was sexually harassed and groped. Instead of closing the restaurant for the day and causing the workers to lose out on a day's worth of money, the owner, who hadn't cooked in years took over for the chef while the kitchen manager put out the word to all current and former employees that there were shifts available if they wanted them. From what I understand the whole week was a wash in terms of profit after which he was up to speed and after two months we finally had a replacement chef. The sacrifices that come with protecting your employees are great, the owner worked 7 days a week for two months and I wish I could say the chef never worked again but that's not necessarily how it works in the restaurant business.

I have also worked for the other kind of owner. I had one that refused to approve raises for something like 4 years, but was always in the market for a new yacht to replace the one be had at the moment. Idiot used monopolize the breakroom (a closet really) while he was there, and once left his yacht magazine when he left, after which I spent 2 hours trying to keep the serving staff from walking off the job. What a farce. Dude ended up going to jail for stealing from his partners. Who'd have thunk it?

Top jobs that sociopaths gravitate to: Politicians, Surgeons, Chefs, Preachers etc....any job that they can have power & control over others. Look up the traits of a sociopath. These types are everywhere blending into society but, behind closed doors they are the emotional, mental, verbal, financial & physical abusers. It is believe that 4% of the population is a sociopath or psychopath. All sociopaths also have narcissistic personality disorder. Experts believe that we meet one in passing everyday, whether in a deli line, friends party, at work etc without even realizing it. And experts believe that we have one in our of friends, coworker, or family without even realizing it. Educate yourself on how to spot one and also look up the “No contact rule” this is the only way to have peace in your life is to follow this rule. Look up the book The sociopath next door by Harvard Professor Dr Martha Stout (audio version free on the net to listen to), The path forward surviving a narcissist by Lisa Scott (see her site), Lovefraud 10 signs you are dating a sociopath by Donna Anderson. Pass this on to your friends, mother, sister, etc. Education is the only way to stay safe in this dangerous world. It was extremely brave of these women to come forward (especially on a show like 60 minutes) to tell their story. To expose a sociopath or anyone that harasses others takes a village to get others to notice. These ladies should be proud of themselves for speaking the truth.

I feel for the woman who was assaulted while passed out and surprised the others who saw it weren't more aggressive about taking a stand for the woman. Secondly, i was a counselor for years with a degree... not everyone who has a high position or a position of power is a psychopath, sociopath or suffers from narcicistic personality disorder. We must be careful when using labels like these. Its not responsible. It's awful working for people like this. I'm so glad that people are being able to speak out more about this behaviour. When I was 15, I worked as a waitress and was treated awful by the managers and owners. They treated all the teenagers as if we were second class. The berated us, made inappropriate comments about our bodies, went through our belongings and were just awful. I finally told my parents what was going on. Luckily, my dad is not a hot head. He calmly went in and in front of all the other workers, told them I would no longer be working there. He then proceeded to tell them that he knew how they were treating the teenage girls and that he would take proper steps if he ever heard of any of that happening again. Later the owner brought his car into my dads garage to be worked on. My father told him he would not work on it and that he would not do business with him. The man profusely apologized (probably because he was afraid of word getting out). I'm so proud of my father for taking up for me.

I see many comments attributing part of the problem to the restaurants not having an HR department, as if that would have made much difference...!!!..It is an overly optimistic to think that having an HR Department would have made much difference.

@@KBWeeds I thought the whole point of Gail King's interview was missed entirely. THIS HAPPENED FIRST: *JAN 29, 2020* ...Disney heiress Abigail Disney turned to social media to weigh in on her reaction to the superstar’s legacy. “I haven’t said anything about Kobe so far because I felt some time needed to pass before weighing in,” wrote Disney Wednesday morning. “But yes, it’s time for the sledgehammer to come out. The man was a rapist. Deal with it.” Gail King's interview was a direct response in defense of Bryant by a friend, Lisa Leslie! *February 4, 2020* _GAIL KING: It's been said that his legacy is complicated because of a sexual assault charge, which was dismissed in 2003, 2004. Is it complicated for you as a woman, as a WNBA player?_ *LISA LESLIE: It's not complicated for me at all. Even if there's a few times that we've been at a club at the same time, Kobe's not the kind of guy - never been, like, you know, 'Lis, go get that girl, or tell her or send her this.' I have other NBA friends that are like that. Kobe was never like that. I just never, have ever seen him being the kind of person that would do something to violate a woman or be aggressive in that way. That's just not the person that I know.* _GAIL KING: But Lisa, you wouldn't see it, though. As his friend, you wouldn't see it._ *LISA LESLIE: And that's possible. I just don't believe that. And I'm not saying things didn't happen. I just don't believe that things didn't happen with force.* _GAIL KING: Is it even a fair question to talk about it considering he's no longer with us and that it was resolved? Or is it really part of his history?_ *LISA LESLIE: I think that the media should be more respectful at this time. It's like if you had questions about it, you had many years to ask him that. I don't think it's something that we should keep hanging over his legacy. I mean, it went to trial.* _GAIL KING: Yeah, well, the case was dismissed because the victim in the case refused to testify. So, it was dismissed._ *LISA LESLIE: And I think that that's how we should leave it.* www.nydailynews.com/sports/basketball/ny-disney-heiress-kobe-rapist-tweet-20200129-s2jg4eeiufg5doo3q7oof4mm6m-story.html www.cbsnews.com/news/lisa-leslie-reflects-legacy-kobe-bryant/

I find it interesting when a person who appears so slovenly looking and attired is hailed as a great chef. In my mind cleanliness is crucial in cooking even down to one's appearance. Add the obviously narcissistic personality too. Perhaps for some there is a weird kind of appeal seeing someone who looks as if he couldn't boil water make a tasty dish? Now I see I wasn't being harsh as his behavior was as atrocious as his dress. Normally I don't like to post negatives and just keep it to myself so I can understand why the women, with more at stake, tried to cope for so long. It's a sad story that too often repeated itself to give the letters of apology much meaning other than a lame damage control spin.

This happens in many restaurants in NYC. MANY restaurants in NYC offer a horrible, unsafe and scary work environment. I have children who worked as wait staff in several NYC restaurants, and many managers have an attitude of using verbal and emotional abuse and manipulation towards wait staff. Their attitude towards staff is "you are replaceable, dispensable, and I can replace you easily." There needs to be a ton more workers' rights for restaurant workers. As a parent, I am disgusted.

I worked in the restaurant/service industry for a little bit, and I can honestly say that these women are right, and I never treated them like that; but they are right. There’s literally no one to complain to. If you did, the manager is going to find out who initiated action against him. Then, through some form of osmosis, the other guys guilty of the same infraction get on code and shut the he he-🏒 🏒 up. After that, your shifts decrease. Finally, all your complaints (legitimate or not) go unheard. Ultimately you quit. They win and hire someone younger.

I see many comments attributing part of the problem to the restaurants not having an HR department, as if that would have made much difference...!!!..It is an overly optimistic to think that having an HR Department would have made much difference.

I'm so glad that I knew at 26 I should get out of the restaurant industry, even though I was good at my job. I got the chance and have had a 30 career in the low-voltage installation industry.

Every single male I've tried to use as a professional reference through the years ALWAYS wants something inappropriate and unprofessional. I've been asked to send pics of my smile which sounds benign, but has nothing to do with providing a prof ref. Just a week ago I had to end another professional relationship because the guy tried to start a romantic long-distance relationship when I engaged about getting a data analyst position at a tech firm and thought I could count on his reference (previously agreed upon). Too many male spotted pigs out there for sure. Pathetic.

Many people in the photography business had openly discussed Mario Batali's awful behavior. We witnessed certain disturbing things while photo shoots were taking place. Mario had a king-like air about him, as many TV celebrities do. His ego was HUGE, and he believed he could get away with just about anything. The same is true for Ken Friedman, who was known as the money man. In the restaurant business, these two guys were at the top. If you wanted a seat at or near their table, you often had to play by their rules. Add to that their love of alcohol. Party every night. It was a recipe for disaster. One can only imagine the many things they did get away with. Very few people actually have the courage or the financial ability to step forward and speak out. I hope the price they pay will last forever. They did so much unspeakable damage, they deserve every second of ridicule and rejection the public can muster. They are hoping the public will forget. I hope nobody forgets.
