Hey guys, loosen up! I know MDM did not sang this aria the way it was usually done by many baritones. But we must examine the context of the video, this was made for a TV show in Germany and in these cases, many unusual things can happen. This is strictly entertainment for the people. We can be sure many who saw this on TV was not an opera fan. MDM is having a JAM! Having fun at it! Letting loose and rocking out. Look he is even wearing a simple sweat shirt not even a tuxedo.
A Master class by the Master tenor.Precision personified! Versatility, control, range, presence, power, class, agility, verility, durability..and to end with that note after such a demanding performance defies logic and comprehension..No wonder he performed Othello so many times when most tenors don't dare to take it on at all. Bravo King Mario👏👏👏
This was FASCINATING! The first time I ever heard a tenor sing an aria for a baritone...he actually sang some notes higher than the baritone G. Very well acted and thought out... What an ending!!
Allegedly Caruso sang Colline's coat aria in a performance of Boheme. The bass suddenly lost his voice and mimed the number, while Caruso, who was playing Rodolfo that night, turned upstage and sang the aria.
"Sempre imitado, nunca igualado, impossível de ser superado!" "Always imitated, never equaled, impossible to overcome!" "Sempre imitato, mai eguagliato, impossibile da superare!" - Jonathas Gagliardi Madeira.
@bpabustan That's the exact point that I made above. He has a baritonal quality to his voice so why not have fun with it? This is exactly what he was doing. If you haven't seen the entire performance you should. It was filmed in a radio studio in Germany with a huge orchestra with terrible acoustics. He chose to sing Otello, Wagner, Rossini, Bellini (Norma), in this recital and most of it was too loud. I own this performance at home, his singing was forte but exciting nevertheless.
@@Monnarchmonnarchy Even Tenors can sing that one cause it goes to a High A, they really have to re-write the Vocal part in Treble Clef so Tenors & Baritones who Read Treble Clef can read it. Even Sopranos can sing that one as written in the Treble Clef.
Perfect, merveilleux ,fantastico!!!!! He could do everything with his voice !!!!!he maked show, his voice was powerful, lot of squillo.....he sung with balls!!!! When i read some of your stupid comments i want to vomit!!!! How can you make critics with such a big artist??? Or make comparison with domingo(who never had any high notes, nasal voice ,always pushing ...etc.....) Guys we are talking of a legend!!!!!!!Mario Del Monaco!!!!!
+Mickael Fischi I'm sorry, but this is SHIT. Mario was amazing but this has got to be the crappiest piece of shit I've ever listened. Good for the laughs, though.
Why not sing this aria-- said MDM...:-) He knew it wasn't his aria to sing..It is fun to watch it ,and was fun for him too.. I LOVE him TOO MUCH !!!
+sugarbist I think Del Monaco joked. He also unable to sing, The Young Caruso ... some songs, + Fedora, Pagliacci, Andrea Chénier, he sang with much breath pressure, never Caruso justice. Its dynamic Scala, only, from forte to fortissimo, Del Monaco was just at the height of his skills. I estimate Del Monaco, but he could not service every genre. Sorry for bad english.
It's a show made for TV dude and therefore the goal is to reach as many people as possible. Yes this is made for baritones but remember MDM is ENTERTAINING. The guy is having tons of fun here.
I have heard so many Largoes, however, when I listened to Monaco, I felt that when Rossini composed it, he may have had this performance in mind! Stunning!!!!
Because he is a tenor and this aria is not suitable for his voice. As simple as that. Do you like also Domingo as Rigoletto? IMHO both of them are unacceptable.
LoqueMan . I think I am quite clear above. Not everybody singing with baritonal notes is a baritone and can sound beautifully. Here MdM is unacceptable IMHO.
@@sugarbist love that aria, maybe the best interpretation. Gobbi, Cappuccili, Rufo, Magomaev did their best, but Mario del Monaco can sing everything! So powerful! Just imagine, if he singing this in his prime!??? And this is in 1969, accident was in 1963!!!
Gran Novedad. Esta Genial.
Is a tenor and he even did a falsetto. The really first part him and the band(orchestra ) were not on perfect timing but I have to say I have so many recording of this song and I love this one . I have slower versions, more polished version with costumes but this is something else! yes maybe a bit of show off as somene said but is really something that I will listen again and again.
It was not too choppy IMO. It was devoid of nuance, but not of agility. No one can say that MDM's voice is lacking in color! His diction is excellent save for one moment. And milking endings excites people- this is how he become the vocal power that he is, by milking the ending of "Addio fiorito asil" in an audition. It's thrilling. Distateful? Sometimes. Most people are afraid of the sheer size of his instrument to realize that he had everything that of an immortal singer, except for restraint.
@UCjU1uzCpM5uIkS24spyQG0g Yes this aria works best for either Baritenors or Dramatic Tenors. Sopranos can sing this one up an Octave since the transcription for Soprano Voice isn't available yet.
Not an "academic" nor a "very pure" performance at all. But, incredible voice, and the greatest freshness and passion I've ever seen in this aria. Bravissimo!
I guess Figaro had a long day and decided a quick trip to the bar was in order 🤣 Del Monaco enthralls us once again. We all gotta cut loose and have fun at some point.
Atroz!!!
halavey how true. Bastiannini was very good but he sure as hell wasn't Warren who, by the way, sings much higher than Del Monaco at times. Another classic redition is the performance by Robert Merrill who sang the opera a great deal. But the fact remains that if today we had a baritone with the power and ring of a Del Monaco there wouldn't be enough money to paid him. It must be hard to believe that a voice could have the power of Del Monaco without forcing. Bravo Mario
QUE TECNICA TAN ASOMBROSA, TODOS TENEMOS NUESTOS PREFERIDOS Y DE NINGUN MODO SERIA ACERTADO EL COMPARAR LA INTERPRETACION DEL GRAN MARIO CON LA DE UN BARITONO, YA QUE ES UN ARIA PROPIA DE ESTE. PERO EL ARTE ES CAPRICHOSO Y HABREMOS DE RECONOCER LA AFINACION EL FIATO Y LA GRAN INTERPRETACION DE ESTE TENOR EN UN CAMPO AJENO A SU TESITURA ASI COMO SU GRAN POTENCIA, BRAVO AL GRAN MARIO DEL MONACO.
@Nello7 I made a comment 2 years ago on this very same video and I said he wasn't able to pull this aria off. This being a song for baritones although I loved that Little Richard/Robert Johnson like falsetto on the last "Figaro" inflection. Then I revisited this again just now. It got me thinking, rock, soul, blues and jazz artists have no problem jamming on tunes. Maybe, MDM is just jamming! He probably will never have an opportunity to sing this onstage or on record so why not jam it on TV.
