Linklight plays Super Mario Galaxy but it is on the PC! Using the power of emulation, specifically the Dolphin emulator. Thanks to an incredible HD 4K texture pack I was able to give this game a breath of fresh air. They really reached for the stars with this one.

whats crazy is that the base visuals STILL look amazing. Definitely one of nintendo's best games visually. The fact that it's taken nintendo this long to make a new mario game with more unique visuals (mario wonder) is really a testament to how great this game has aged. I really hope nintendo gives smg1/2 a proper rerelease/remaster for the switch outside of the 3d all stars bundle.

The bee queen's fuzzy effect is created by just layering hundreds of textures on top of each other. If you look close at them you can even see where they break apart. It's an effect that really works best from a distance.

I'd love to see a comparison to the Switch's 3d all stars version of Super Mario Galaxy (spoiler alert it looks nicer than the Switch version, the switch version lacks anti aliasing which can be fixed with the mcable or mclassic, or a TV's inbuilt processing)

i'm not one to get all surprised and blown away by graphics, but MAN does this game look so much better with the HD texture pack and custom resolutions within the emulator's settings. i could never go back and replay this game on my original wii system ever again because of this.

Not gonna go through all the comments to check, so im sorry if someone already said but the fur on the Queen Bee is done with fur shells Basically you make copies of the geometry you want to make look fuzzy, expand it into several layers, aka shells (the more shells the better the effect) and you texture each shell with smaller and smaller dots of the fur color (to give a tapering effect toward the end of each strand) the effect was used in a number of games before Mario Galaxy, such as Star Fox Adventures on the Gamecube If you want to learn more, a youtuber named Acerola did a good video on shell fur ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9dr-tRQzij4.htmlsi=6g-L691HKcLxYzdP

Try rendering at 1440p or 4k even if you only have a 1080p screne, I call it brute force anti-aliasing.

I don't remember why I commented this... anyway, SSAA is more efficient due to only upscaling at the edges of polygons; perhaps with or without anisotropic filtering, it looks the same as downscaling from higher resolutions but with better performance. However in some niche scenarios, any AA can be inaccessible or may inhibit depth buffer reads for external shaders. Not that it matters for SMG, since many objects including Mario skip depth drawing in the first place (from the last time I checked).

might be a bit of a hottake, but I prefer playing mario galaxy at 480p. masks most of the graphical errors, and allows your imagination to fill in the gaps. also the reason why the hud elements float is I think for CRT burn in reduction
