I consider Super Mario RPG a hidden gem, since it was a late SNES release, was never released in PAL terrirories (sans VC release) and was the last SquareSoft game on a Nintendo system for half a decade. Its a wonderful game, with a well written highly enjoyable story with great characters, fun battle system, nice side quests, awesome soundtrack and good pacing. It took me around 20 to 25 hours to beat, so it's not the longest RPG, but its so enjoyable that it stuck with me for a long time.
All the characters are great, I really like Geno and Mallow, how they had SquareSoft esc qualities, but still managed to fit in the Mario universe. Probably one of my favourite SNES RPGs alongside FFIV and the almighty Chrono Trigger.
another great video MJR. I love when you have kinsley and reggie as guests, they have great gaming knowledge and passion. Another Mario PC game i can think of is Mario teaches typing.
I'm very surprised you didn't mention the Game Boy version of Donkey Kong. If you like Mario vs DK you will love Donkey Kong '94. There are 101 levels and it's almost exactly like Mario vs DK. It's one of my all-time favorite Game Boy games. It's honestly up there with Tetris, Metroid 2, Pokemon, Super Mario Land 2, Link's Awakening, and Kirby's Dream Land 2. If there's a part two I suggest you look into that one. Also, if you want to count Wario games you should look into Warioland for the Virtual Boy. All the Warioland games are fantastic, actually. Wrecking Crew is also a decent game, though not the best. And if you like Picross, I've heard Mario Picross is a good version.
Yes! Donkey Kong 94 is awesome. It starts like regular Donkey Kong, but then it goes on and introduces more gameplay mechanics. I have it now in my 3DS, since it's available to purchase on the Virtual Console, but playing it on Super Game Boy is the superior way.
Absolutely. Donkey Kong 94 is actually where Mario's movement style gets fleshed out (backflips, crawling, handstands) and thus what Super Mario 64 uses as its template.
Wow. When you guys spoke about 6 Golden Coins, I honestly started to tear up. I actually had to pause the video. That just brought back memories of how much that game meant to me at that time. I played it over and over on my gameboy that I saved up for as a kid, and fell in love with that game. There's something about seeing someone else's appreciation for that game that really gets me.
Well done, as always. Mario Picross is one of my favorite Game Boy games. I even like 'Mario is Missing'.. not sure why. I think it's because it asks questions even I know the answer to.
John Riggs: RIGG'd Games I played that as a child on a site where a person put up a bunch of NES games. I'm not sure what it says about me that I preferred it over Mario 1
I played (and still have the box) Mario is missing for PC. Didnt know how to play it at the beginning but then I learned! Great game to know famous locations and learn English!
Mario Golf and Mario Tennis for GBC/GBA are excellent! Way better than the console games. They both have a really cool RPG mode for the main game that's so much better than anything in the console games. I prefer the graphics and chiptunes of the GBC games, but the GBA games are great as well.
The Mario that came with the snes was the best. When you jumped on Yoshi you would hear the cowbells that had never gotten out of my head that tune is so catchy
MetalJesusRocks If you do a part 2, I could record footage of DDR Mario. I have the mat and the game (I think) lying around somewhere. I know for sure I have the mat. If I don't there's always emulation. Haha! EDIT: Also dood, epic hair. \m/
Fortune Street (or Boom Street as it's known here) is one of our most played Wii games. Really cool to see it in this video. The more people who know about it the better, I want a Wii U version. :)
The gameplay of Mario vs Donkey Kong's is actually very reminiscent of Donkey Kong on the GameBoy, which for all intents and purposes is a Mario game, and progenitor of the MvDK series. So yeah, MvDK was far from the first to have Mario doing puzzle platform gameplay :)
Mario is in it, and it's certainly more of a Mario game than Alleyway or Golf. I was really expecting Kinsey to mention that, given the top she's wearing.
I agree about 6 Golden Coins, I remember it fondly in my childhood. I got it on the Virtual Console on the 3ds and finished it more quickly than in 1 year, it definately has some replayability also by comparing your skill now that you are an experienced gamer.
Personally I wouldn't say Super Mario Land 2, as I and most people probably got that with the game boy back in the day. Good game though. Oh I love Alleyway by the way, good call!
Mario Land 2 is one of my top Mario games as well.. And I feel its right up there with Mario Bros 3 and Mario World. Also a fan of Fortune Street and the mario sports games. -Golf and Soccer being the most fun
Super Mario Land 2 is DEFINITELY one of the best Mario games around, especially when you take the limitations of the platform into consideration. It's also probably one of the EASIEST games in the series, I'd wager, though: as nice as the free-roaming aspect was, letting you tackle the levels in any order you wanted, it quickly became obvious that the levels were all balanced toward a lower skill set than the later stages of other games. That final castle is a bit of a pain, though. Mario DOES have other appearances on the PC as well! The original Super Mario Bros. has a VERY crappy PC port without scrolling levels, rendering many of the jumps and platforming segments far harder than they are in the definitive NES version.
This is a really cool video; I've never seen anyone focus on the often overlooked Mario titles like this! Super Mario Land 2 really does need more recognition; one of my absolute favorites as well and a fantastic game. The Wario Land games that came afterwards need more love as well!
Great games! I had a CDI growing up in the Netherlands (where it was build by Philips) and yes Hotel Mario is one of the best games on that system. Including 7th Guest and 11th Hour.
Guess I didn't realize 6 Golden Coins was a hidden gem....I used to play it all the time, and still enjoy it. I definitely agree with Kinsey...it's by far one of my very favorite Mario games.
Another great hidden gems video. Always love to see new games I don't know about, helps me to grow my collection. Like the Dreamcast, I added 7 new games to my collection because of your hidden gems review. Thanks MJ and to all your guests.
Fortune Street has been around since 1991, seven years before the first Mario Party. Also, before the Wii version, there was a DS Fortune Street in 2007 that also had Mario characters, but only in Japan.
I agree with Kinsey on super Mario sunshine. It doesn't get the love it deserves. It has wonderful mechanics, and to watch a speed runner master this game is quite beautiiful. It is unique.
Agreed. The mechanics are perfect, just running around the hub world is fun. Unfortunately, some the level/mission designs aren't great. I hope they make a sequel. Forget the voice acting, create some new creative areas, bring back the mechanics and setting: amazing game.
There's also a pre-qual, if you will, to Mario vs. Donkey kong on the regular Gameboy, simply called Donkey Kong. Great game as well! Thumbs up on this video. I love the Hidden Gems series!
Watching you guys gives me hope. Video games are a passion of mine. I've grown up playing video games and I am going to continue to play video games until the day I drop. Though, sometimes it's difficult to be excited about collecting and playing my video games when I am met with nothing but judgement and negativity by my family and peers. It's a hobby like any other and I don't understand why they can't see that. Watching you it gives me hope that I will find people to connect with and share my hobby with. People who shares my passion for this great medium.
Fortune Street is part of a long-running series named Itadaki Street, which has been popular in Japan for quite some time. There is also a version on the PS2 which pits Dragon Quest characters against Final Fantasy characters. It is one of the bests in the series, next to the SFC version.
I can't believe you didn't mention "Donkey Kong" on the Gameboy. That is a true Mario hidden gem...and in my opinion, better than the Mario Vs. Donkey Kong series. It's got like 99 levels, and all of them are unique!
I didn't expect a hidden gems video for Mario, but that was a pretty good list and I really enjoyed the video. the only thing that bugged me was the emulator filter you had running, I think you should present the games as they are thanks again for all the great content
Mario tennis for gba looks cool. I have the one for the color, very challenging game! Love Kinsey's purple highlights, would love to cuddle up to her while playing some games. Super Mario sunshine is incredible. Amazing graphics and gameplay, not to mention brilliant music!
Great list, I would have never even looked at Fortune Street if it wasn't mentioned. Another game that wasn't on the list is NBA STREET V3 on GameCube, it features Mario and the crew as well.
MetalJesusRocks Have u guys heard about the original donkey kong for the gameboy? I was shocked to find out that after beating the arcade stages it turns into a mario v donkey kong game w/ 100 levels. Its an awesome game to check out if u love mvdk. Thanks for another great video tho!
Aaaactually, the first Mario vs. Donkey Kong was mainly modeled after the original GB Donkey Kong game, which had very similar gameplay. Mario vs. Donkey Kong 2 for the DS, however, was modeled more after Mario and Wario
Oh! I ordered Super Mario Ball (Mario Pinball Lands Name in europe) yesterday with complete packaging & instructions for just around 10 dollars, that so amazing
I don't know about the US, but Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins was a huge hit here in Europe. It was even a packing game for the Game Boy. (not a launch title)
I really enjoyed Mario vs. Donkey Kong(I didn't like 2 as much) and Super Mario Land 2! One hidden gem for me that I think is less known than some of the games in this video is Yoshi's Cookie for the NES/SNES, it's a fun puzzle game.
Love the video and channel. Mario vs Donkey Kong is amazing, but it's predecessor Donkey Kong for the Game Boy started that series which is also an amazing hidden gem starring our favorite mustachioed plumber. Definitely check that one out for a great time that not many people know is a immersive platform puzzle masterpiece.
As an educator who teaches keyboarding, I'd love to give a shout out to "Mario Teaches Typing." Learning to type is never much fun, but when you throw Mario in, it makes the experience worth the while. :)
What about Yoshi's safari? It's a rail shooter for the SNES that uses the Super Scope. It was also the first instance of Princess Peach being called Princess Peach instead of Princess Toadstool in an NA release, which is quite interesting.
To answer your Question about PC Mario games, there was a few more the just "Mario is Missing". There was Mario Teaches Typing 1 - 2 Mario's Time Machine Deluxe Mario Gallery Super Mario Bros. Print World Mario's FUNdamentals and about 20 more PC games from the Apple ][ to Win 98 / Mac os 8. Hope this helps. Loved the video! Thanks.
Fortune Street is actually a longstanding series in Japan with the first game being released in 1991. So far only thee 10th and 11th have been released outside Japan
What happened to Mario Golf Advanced? Same as Tennis as it had the RPG leveling and stats. I assume you guys don't have it but you should have mentioned above the GB and GB color Golf games.
Super Mario Strikers (or Mario Smash Football as it's called here in Europe) is a freaking excellent game. I used to play it with a friend of mine almost religiously. It's still my favourite football video game ever made. Last game I ever bought for the Gamecube brand new :D And yes, we both thought the sequel on the Wii was a little over the top as well.
The second she was holding what appeared to be a Gameboy Game, I knew it was 6 Golden Coins. Best handheld Mario game of all time, period. When I put copies of it up for sale, they sell in a matter of minutes, regardless of condition.
