Wages of Sinn will it? Seems like a pretty large generalization. A character who is seemingly a cliche can make decisions you wouldn’t necessarily expect (not that that is the defining factor on a good roleplayer anyways). I’ve seen players who sit down with nothing more than the base backstory and an alignment and they get into character and build it based on their whim and it makes for an incredible character

Marisha mentioned in one episode of Talks that playing Kayleth led her to understand and live the perspective of someone she doesn't agree with. She mentioned she doesn't really like the personality of Kayleth, but playing Kayleth gave her the space to empathize with the character and hence play her much deeply. Beau is basically a lesbian-disaster Marisha who loves to parkour around the room and is a total badass of a character.
@TroySpartan247
@TroySpartan247 3 года назад
She also admits in one con that Keyleth was Marisha attempting to min-max a character and make it theoretically the most powerful. To that, she did VERY well, but personality-wise, it’s like Keyleth was miscast. Beau is very much Marisha having 100% fun with a character, and describes Beau as her id. It fits her so well. She was a bit grating at the beginning of the campaign, but I think that was by design because she grows so endearing as time goes on.

I haven't watched the full scene, but as far as I know she misunderstood and thought the water was right under her, not rocks. As it is, she has a legacy now, and that embarrassing moment for the others to bring up and laugh about. None of them are holding grudges, so why is everybody else?

Fritz Darchinger So you pictured a pool of fish blood turning into a pool of Keyleth blood? That makes almost less sense than a splattered fish turning into a wrecked Keyleth. I’ve always pictured it like so; Druid is a bear, bear sustains hefty damage from attack & Druid can’t hold the form - form slips & the slash that killed the bear is simply physical trauma on the Druid. Bruises, internal bleeding, etc. as they’ve protected themselves with this magical form that is essentially an extension of their life essence. So in the Keyleth situation, as soon as that fish hit & sustained such major trauma the magic can’t hold the form & it drops, revealing a battered & bruised Keyleth who drops dead from internal bleeding immediately.

Marisha did with Keyleth what Jack Gleeson did with Joffrey Baratheon: played the character so well that the actor got bile and shit thrown their way for what happened in fiction. You said it here, it's admirable. And while I can't say Kiki was the _perfect_ mirror for our own awkward selves, it takes guts of iron to stick to the role despite the internet's combined -reee- hatred in her daily feed.
@theswagonborn4164

Just gonna paste the same response I gave to the last guy who tried this line. Joffery was meant to be a dislikable asshole and the actor behind it delivered that perfectly. Keyleth's character was delivered poorly and thus became unlikable. That's the difference. If Marisha was doing it right the critter community would unite under the same banner like GoT fans united against Joffery. Instead the character Keyleth is still causing the biggest divide ever in this community.

She's the one taking more notes, she's the one who remembers the details, the npcs and the banter best, she's the one who connects the dots quicker. But also she is the one that brings emotion to the table. I mean, look at the way she reacts everytime something big happens. I really wish people would cut Marisha some slack, man. During campaign 1 she would make me cringe every now and then, but she was learning to play D&D using arguably THE most complicated class. Moon Druids have wildshape PLUS full PREPARATION spellcasting. Compared to everyone else's character mechanics the second most complex might have been Scanlan or Pike, a whole world less bookkeeping. Marisha's notes were always best. From an acting standpoint, she did at times seem the most uncomfortable, but considering that she's not even 30, and sharing the stage with people that have been professional voice actors for way longer? Like I said, I wish the critter community would cut her just a tad more slack.
@michaelrussell7806
@michaelrussell7806 4 года назад
I think her being the youngest has a lot to do with it. Also, Matt (who I assume she's most comfortable around) has to DM, and can't interact like another player could to help out. I think Laura senses this and goes out of her way to encourage Marisha too. The awkwardness she sometimes brings, while obviously uncomfortable, is actually pretty refreshingly real I think. Her weakness is the game mechanics, but that comes with time and is the easiest to teach.

@@TheKnight212 1. There’s a huge difference between playing to play and playing to stream, and like OP said, she may have been experienced with the game, but she was the LEAST experienced with acting and putting herself out there for the public eye. I can’t imagine the extra stress it can add to the game, having to be constantly performing on top of everything else. 2. They made these characters not knowing that they were going to be performing them. Not every d&d character is well suited to performance, and I think this may have been a struggle with Keylith being that she has said she made the character intentionally shy since (when their game started) she didn’t know the others. This character made with the express purpose of reflecting her less comfortable relationship (at the start) with the other players now has to be translated to a show meant to entertain millions? I could definitely see where that got difficult to translate. And 3. Experience with the game is not experience with the class. In my most recent game I was a ranger, and I made a hell of a lot mistakes- as someone who has only played sell casters before- despite it being my 8th campaign. Luckily I had amazing DM to help me out and extend some patience!!! :) But even in my most comfortable classes I stick slack on my knowledge of mechanics, because that’s not what I’m good at! I love the story telling, I suck at rules- everyone has their strengths and weaknesses (and some of the people I’ve played with, who have known the rules the best, have been the most difficult to play beside). Over all, I think empathy is a better reaction than the judgment you so kindly offered 🙃. I find Marisha to be an INCREDIBLY relatable player, amongst the ranks of CR, because where the others are seasoned actors learning to play the game, she is in many ways the opposite. Many equate her “cluelessness” to lack of knowledge without taking into account how comfortable she may be in front of their digital crowd vs the others. And we see in C2 and C3 how AMAZING her character design and acting can be when she is able to actually design her character around the knowledge that she will be performing, and not just playing.

As someone who LARPs emotional characters, getting into the mindset is a huge part of it. You have to get into the mindset that you are not you. You are your character and everything people are saying are directed at you, not the character, while still understanding that it's not personall oog. My character has had a melt down multiple times, once to even get into character due to something that tore me violently out of game (sort to speak). If a character's an asshole in a game I'm playing in or DMing and I or someone else at the table is getting uncomfortable, it's worth discussing. Thank you for making this video. I recently started reading the comments on the episodes on RU-vid and I was surprised to see the flack Marisha gets from people because Beau is one of my favourite characters in the party and she plays her well and consistently. What you said about Marisha trying to encourage others and making space for them to play their character is something I hadn't realized until your video but it's very apparent to me now. On an interview with Google she talked about the aftermath of [redacted] 's death and how she told Ashly Burch off-screen that Beau would want to go pretty hard on her character and Marisha wanted to make sure she was cool with that. Beau's anger made room for Ashly to play out Keg's guilt over the situation while driving the scene forward emotionally. If I ever had someone like Marisha as a player sitting at the same table I'd be quite happy.

I think people get annoyed with her characters at times for being inconsistent or irrational, and extend that to marisha herself when I think it’s probably more intentional than they realize. I remember in C1 times when Keyleth would get all holier than thou with her morality and it felt hypocritical because she’s murdered a lot, including innocents. But that’s the character, and she went on an arc. Sometimes people are hypocritical. But I think people get annoyed because she’s flawed and extend her character’s flaws to her as a person, which is unfair and antithetical to the essence of roleplaying.

@companyoflosers
@companyoflosers 5 лет назад
has nothing to do with being female. Laura doesnt see anywhere near the amount of criticism Marisha does. Also Talesin got a TON of hate when he had Molly yell at Nott after they found out more about his past life. Marisha gets criticism because she has shown time and again that she doesnt know how to use her abilities and she gets a bit preachy. like i dont mean she doesnt know that she has abilities, but that she clearly doesnt know what they do exactly. its like she skims through them. remember the first time they "clouded", when she was a druid? her decision to be a monk this time around was clearly in reaction to fans giving her shit for her spell usage.

@@zennamok5428 I just think it shows that Marisha is capable of playing a character that I'd like to see in the campaign. It was funny, I'd known of Crit Role before the Covid, just never got into the campaign. The DM of my campaign had been talking about it and I decided to check it out. One of his comments was how a character called Keyleth got a lotta hate online. It wasn't until I got to episode 12 and 13 of the 2nd campaign that I ever delved into the comments. Those episodes had Beau and Fjord threatening Caleb for taking a spellcase because of the threat of discovery, even though the others had left behind a mass amount of other evidence that the home had been broken into. The first time I ever commented was during on episode 21 of the 2nd campaign. This was because I was pissed at Marisha's actions in snatching the magical nuke from Caleb in order to give it to the random person(who was a guest on the show) they'd just met the day before. The next time my DM mentioned Crit Role, I was at episode 22. I said, "Marisha played Keyleth in the first campaign, yeah?" "That's right," he told me. "I understand why she got a lot of hate online," I replied. I just figure that some people see her actions in a different light. Or possibly they see a lot of themselves in her. I'm not planning on watching the first campaign because I've heard Marisha was worse in that one. Still, beside a few instances such as the episode 10 fiasco I've enjoyed the second campaign. Watching the Darrington Brigade convinced me that Marisha is capable of better characters. Just as long as the characters are pretty close to her temperament. While I understand that these campaigns started from a group of friends playing D&D, like you I don't think that exempts them from criticism. I'm probably more willing to give Marisha a pass simply because I've had players that were a bit problematic but we all still wanted to play with them. Edited because I mixed up which episodes things happened in.

Thanks for this video. I honestly have never understood any of the hate that Marisha gets. She played Keyleth very well, and continues to do so with Beau. If you don’t like her characters, that’s fine, but don’t attack her personally.

I feel like a lot of people look at some of the mistakes she has made on camera and see a little too much of a person who elected to ruin the game for them. Most players and GMs have run into someone that uses the "I'm playing my character"as a free pass to be an asshole. Marisha's actions sometimes push close to that boundary.
@PhileasLiebmann
@PhileasLiebmann 5 лет назад
@@SpasticEliteStudios I would agree and honestly I didn't want to bring this up, but if that's what people hate so much, why are there still people saying Tiberius was so great? (And yes there're people like that even after everything Orion pulled on and off the show.) I mean Keyleth wasn't my favorite c1 character either, that place is firmly reserved for Percy, but it really does seem like the people that shit on Keyleth mostly do so because she keeps the party from going murder hobo and presents the others with moral dilemmas (I'm here fresh from rewatching the Whitestone arc over the holidays so that's new on my mind) even if the resulting discussion goes nowhere because those people think that isn't as fun as an actually engaging story or character development.
@Kade_Bauman
@Kade_Bauman 5 лет назад
Jennifer Rogers, I don’t ever really remember Keyleth/Marisha doing anything to be an asshole in C1. I mean yeah, Keyleth sometimes preached of her moral superiority, or made some irrational decisions, but I think that’s part of who Keyleth is as a person. Furthermore, some of Keyleths famous speeches such as “Only big men talk big words that only fail on the battlefield” showcase Keyleth’s awkward transition into leadership. Otherwise, I think Keyleth’s goofs make for some of the funniest moments of the campaign. After all, “we’re basically gods”
@TheGreatDrake
@TheGreatDrake 5 лет назад
I've seen people bitch about things she does that other members are allowed to do with out batting an eye. Like just this campaign people were bitching that Beau has slept with multiple people even though last campaign Scanlan tried to sleep with pretty much anything that moves and Grog hit up the brothel pretty much every other town and in this campaign Molly flat out had an orgy but yet Beau is the one that they call out for it.

I'm not gonna lie. I didn't like Keyleth, like, at all. (Okay that's not completely true, she had her moments). I just didn't connect with the character and I didn't find her motivations as interesting as the others. But I never held it against Marisha. I think the level of hate she got was unreal. It was supremely unfair. I like Beau a lot more. I think this for a few reasons. First, she just reminds me of an actual friend of mine (minus the punching). Also, Marisha knows a whole lot more about D&D now. Also, Also monk is a way less complicated class to play than druid. I know this was kind of an off-hand joke in the druid video, but I really do think not geling with your class and having to hyper-focus on what your class does can really drain from the quality of your RPing. (For me it's rogues. I can't rp a rogue to save my life.) Tl;dr Beau is a pretty great character, and while Keykey was probably the weakest character, roleplay-wise, Marisha did not deserve the treatment she got. We all have classes we're better with than others. I rock cleric, but rogues make my head hurt, for example.

I personally think that Sam or Travis are just cosmically better for this video due to the small details they pull off with their characters, and I was never really a fan of the 10 minute long moral monologues from....anyone really in any campaign, but Marisha does get a lot more shit than she deserves, though keyleth is definitely one of my less liked CR characters, haven't quite caught up to S2 yet but I hear beau is great

You should do one on Liam and Laura and the importance for bonds between characters. Vax and Vex were such an amazing duo :3 They even both carried it over a bit i C2 - both Jester and Caleb has a person that they know and trust more than the rest of the group, at least in the beginning.

Love this Marisha appreciation. I'd be honored to play at her table. She's the kind of player I want to play with. yeah, yeah, she's misunderstood her spells and made some bad decisions but literally EVERY person who has played D&D for any length of time has misunderstood a spell and made some bad decisions. And most of us don't have millions of people scrutinizing our every word. All the love to Marisha.

I am a newbie who joined at around ep 10 of s 2 and really didn't understand all the Marisha hate. I had played a total of 2 trpgs neither of which were very roleplaying centric and neither of which were D&D. But I legitimately loved how much she roleplayed. This is probably because I started at s2 and watched s1 later. The two characters balance each other out. Being a voice actor and having played this game for years made her a brilliant roleplayer and the fact she is basically a shipping bicycle atm is probably not a coincidence.

@someonessidechannel1485 5 лет назад
To be honest, I'm 50 episodes into the first season and I can't recall moments where she's "shouting over others." There's definitely a lot of moments where there's three pairs trying to roleplay at once and all of the mics are feeding at the same volume, and it just ends up drowning out Matt, but that's down to a technical issue and not them shouting at each other.

This reminds me of my favorte dnd session ever. My friends and I were tracking a Necromancer through the woods, when we finally found him we agreed on an ambush. What we did not agree on was who to kill. You see: I was playing a zealot rogue that was pretty much indorctinated by a hardcore anti crime religious order to kill all criminals that associated themselves with evil and had absolutely NO CHILL when it came to killing these people (he was LN bordering on LE). On the opposite end of the table was one of the most seasoned RPers in the group, and my best friend. He was playing almost the exact opposite: a cleric that believed everyone could be saved and that life should be cherished at all costs even his own. Just the previous session he had stayed my blade and I had warned him that, if he did so again, I would kill him. And yet despite my warnings he did so again sparing the life of nearly all the mercinaries he had hired after he even healed the last one, I was so invested thanks to his strict rp that I made good on my promise. I ran him through with my poisoned blade critically striking him pinning him aainst a nearby treestump, he promptly raised his hands to indicate he meant no harm. The DM was just sitting there jaw on the floor. And my two companions were trying to talk me out of finishing him off. I ended up pulling my sword out of him, we technically leveled up after the encounter so before even 1 deathsave was made he was back on his feet and my rogue was forever changed by the ordeal. We still fondly recall the session when a single encounter almost resulted in a TPK by friendly fire.
