My personal opinion is that we need to give Scorsese's newer films more time before we can say whether or not they hold up against his older ones. In the ten years since The Departed came out, from my perspective, it seems like it has been getting more praise than it initially did. We call classic movies "classics" because they stood the test of time. I can't wait to see what people are saying about these films another decade or two down the line
It's been maybe 15 years but honestly this is overrated AF. The middle of the film is basically the same as Infernal Affairs, but the first third of the film has so many jump cuts it ceases to be enjoyable. Even the part that basically leans heavily on Infernal Affairs isn't all that. Which is forgivable if it's original material but not when it's rehashing. This film deserves to be a lot better. Taking a strong concept like Infernal Affairs, you should be able to focus on what to add, but somehow this film mostly detracts.
@@TequilaToothpick Though I’m not big on the Departed and find it a little nonsensical in places, I do quite like Infernal Affairs - the ending I find especially haunting and memorable (only seen the first one). I don’t think it’s a perfect film or anything, but can I ask why you dislike it?
The Scorsese version is really overrated. Less of a film, more of a flickbook, if you can imagine the nightmare of being stuck watching a flickbook for two and a half hours!
Completely disagree with Kermode's comment that it won't stick with audiences, DiCaprio also didn't get a mention, who for my money gives the best performance in the entire film.
Mark has his opinion but it a beautifully poetic piece Martin goes back into his sand box and draws a cast together that match and stand tall against all his other great pieces be they knights or rooks . The king here though is the masterful Jack Nicholson who with De caprio Damon Wahlberg Farmiga Baldwin Sheen and Ray Winstone to name few , all act their socks off to the direction of Scorcese whom they clearly love , and why not, his movies are the who's who of brand name films . This movie stands along side those movies with ease with gritty emotional tense performances and it's hard to find any actor who fails to deliver . Mark kermode wasn't phased because he is immune but modern classic is a good way to describe this movie .
@robaquarian the reason he got Oscar nominated is because when he is off screen we really notice he is off screen, his lines are made even better by his delivery.
You know what's kinda weird about the movie the 'Good Shepherd' is that there are a few questions that go unanswered throughout the movie and there are no videos on RU-vid that shed light on them. At the very least you could surmise that the questions are answered in a subtle fashion where only a few select people could understand. Specifically, people in the intelligence community could pick up on. Hopefully someone will create a video on RU-vid and give us some more insight on some of the plot twists in the movie.
Not sure how this film could NOT stick with you. I've never seen a slicker, tenser, more satisfying thriller. And that includes Infernal Affairs. 20 years down the line I'd wouldn't be surprised if people regard it as Scorceses best.
Di Caprio and Damon struggle a bit compared to the giant shadows of Andy Lau and Tony Leung, but Mark Wahlberg in a new role created for The Departed steals the show and is the single I slightly favor this over the original.
great film. It's no Infernal Affairs, and it's certainly no Goodfellas, Mean Streets etc. but I did like it. There's plenty in it that to me was clearly played for laughs. Wahlberg was very funny I think. I would say though that Matt Damon and Leo DiCaprio were the only character's that seemed "real" to me I agree that it is Martin Scorcese light and I certainly do't think it's a masterpiece but it is a very decent film. However if you really liked this you'd love Infernal Affairs :)
It wasn't really a remake though. It was a basis at the most. It's a great film. Everyone is great. They used that and used Whitey Bulger and the Irish mob as the focus. This well isn't a remake
It's 1000% a remake. You can take scenes from the original and basically overlay them to this film. The differences are 50 minutes which add nothing and the fact the main characters share the same girlfriend/psychiatrist which is stupid as hell. In other words it's worse. Yeah it's based in Boston instead of Hong Kong but what do you really learn about Irish mafia from that era? Zero. Just the same Drop Kick Murphies song played on repeat to paste over the cracks. It's a pathetic performance from a director who's capable of so much more.
I agree - Infernal Affairs is a far better and more interesting, edgy movie. That's kind of what i was getting at "The Departed is more Shutter Island than Goodfellas" - that's a good point too. I've watched again quite recently & I still enjoyed it on the level of pure hilarious over the top acting [i still think Wahlberg is really funny in this]. I think the nuttiest, campest perfrmance is actually Nicholson's. :)
i disagree about mark walberg's performance in this. i like walberg but i was surprised that he was nominated for the Departed. playing an angry obnoxious guy from boston is not much of a stretch for him.and the character had some good lines but so what.
@@TequilaToothpick fuck the source material at this point chief, we’re talking about THIS film and Marks character was pretty good but I wouldn’t say it was anything special, he’s mostly just pissed off and dishing out insults. Leo carries it, you could see and feel how anxiety ridden and lost he felt as Billy.
Shit film. Jack Nicholson had no gravitas as an old time crime boss. Matt Damon has no charisma full stop. Mark wahlberg is mark wahlberg. Leo is leo. Why it's so highly rated I don't know.
The film loses its way once Quillan (Martin Sheen) is thrown from the top of a building and the film's well constructed platform falls to earth with him. Flatters to deceive.
Simon frustrates me as it’s clear he knows nothing about film, it would be better with Mark on his own. Case in point when Simon looks up Dante’s Inferno. Thanks for that. Geez. 😏
+chanceie12 Indeed. Boring is the last word that should be used to describe the Departed. It may be a more shallow movie than Scorsese's other work, but there is way more action in this one than in any of his others.
The Departed is my least favourite Scorsese film ..the plot the acting the characters and the dialogue are cliché and predictable..Goodfellas Cape Fear Taxi Driver even Gangs of New York have images and characters that stay with you and get in your head..Departed was like watching a 2 hour plus TV crime thriller that's OK to pass the time but a week later I hardly remembered anything about it
