I like that line, "practice makes permanent". It's a good shout on us practicing, because getting rid of bad habit is a loooooot harder than building good ones from the start.
for the LONGEST time i thought he was using hammer-ons for this run and it just didn't sound right to me. I figure out YESTERDAY that he was picking in and practiced it for about 20 minutes. Now today you come out with this? where have you been for the last 2 years?! haha man thanks for this video, it was the last thing in this whole song i needed to learn!
Another Great Lesson Justin. Also, I just opened your latest newsletter and read that you recently got to meet Mark. That's awesome enough on it's own but for him to then tell you that he's a big fan of your site and visit's regularly, Unbelievable, Must have been fantastic to hear that from such a Legend. I read an Interview Mark gave recently and was stunned to read that he believes he actually could be doing with a few lessons himself and would love a teacher to call round with him once in a while. I've included this little section of the interview below. “I certainly think that my playing has suffered from just being so preoccupied with writing songs over the years. I’m not bitching about it, I love songwriting more than anything and that is why I’ve ended up where I am with it, with the guitar. “I tell you the truth, though, I’d like to have a guitar teacher come round on a Tuesday morning or something and ring the bell, and not set me a load of theory but just talk about a little passage or a little sequence and leave it with me and then go through it with me the next week… That’s exciting to me, because I’ve never had a teacher like that. I don’t want to start learning some shit that I’m not interested in, but there’s lots and lots of other stuff I’d still love to get into.” Sounds to me like he's looking for something similar to what you wanted yourself in your recent uploads with Chris Buck. 😉😉
I don't use a pick at all, so these Mark Knopfler lessons are perfect! Thanks Justin! Maybe you could do this same idea but also with rhythm guitar next?

Wow. Wonderful. I think you've set a record for packing useful information into a video. When I saw it was a 20 minute video, I thought, uh oh. But it felt like 5 minutes. Great video.
I use metronome to be faster. For instance; Sultans of Swing nearly 148BPM. I started 90BPM, then 95, 100, 110, 120, etc... It's very useful doing practise like this way.
Interesting, learned this the other day. It depends where you want to start the cycle of notes but I found the easiest way was to use a plectrum and play downwards, first note on the B string, second note being the lowest note of the E string, then hammer on the pinky and finally pull it off again for the fourth note. Alternatively, hybrid pick B strings with plectrum and E string with finger followed by the hammer on and pull off. Your way sounds better but the sequence of notes is the same!

You've covered alot of his stuff but it would be great to do a multi video series like this on his plaiyng like you're doing with MK. Justin do you think beginner who admires MK and is inspired by him should use Thumb-Index-Middle fingers and forget about ring finger - or maybe that would be wrong choice and detrimental for future of his playing. Thumb-Index-Middle (no ring) feels so easy, good and natural for me.
Thank you for this video! I've been trying to use picks for many years and I can't ever get used to it. I've bought just about every style of pick know to humanity and it just doesn't feel right. I've played fingerstyle most of my life and feel like there have to be other alternatives to a pick I finally found your lesson for alternatives to picks and I thank you. I hope I can find more of these types of lesson. Wes Montgomery and Lawrence Gatemouth Brown just to name a few played without picks and sound incredible. Take care and keep up the great work. Hello Justin, Please allow me to have a little comment on your technique: You are breaking "my golden rule" to avoid using a finger twice, like you do with your thumb. Using a finger twice makes you lose half of your maximum speed, as if you were walking using only one leg. So how do I do it? I play the: - first note with my middle finger - second note as a pull off - third note with my thumb (B-string) - fourth note with my first finger (index??) What is your opinion about this? Gerard
Been practicing this last solo sultins swing for months I have it but,its hard to keep speed! About 4 months been practicing this I dot seem to be picking up speed its frustrating,just that part,my picking hand,my thumb index only goes so fast then goes sloppy why is this its frustrating how long can this take been 4 months

50 years ago I was advised to learn to play on an acoustic before moving on to an electric. Would you give the same advice to a to a beginner? And no...if you read the prior comment, I never did move on...lol. Do you think it’s time for me to try out an electric?

Soltano...thanks for that response...and finding Justin’s thoughts on the matter. Seems he has covered everything in terms of learning in to play. The advice I received was, start hard and move on to the easier stuff. Justin blows that out of the water, and it makes pretty good sense. Many beginners do get discouraged very quickly with a cheap acoustic that is just difficult to play. Maybe it’s time to pick up an electric...lol.
If you keep your thumb for playing the B string, then use your First & Second fingers for playing the E string you will find you dont need the up & down movement in the wrist and you will be able to play it faster than Knophler 😀 Enjoy
I do not play an Electric...does this technique transfer to an acoustic in a way that makes any sense? Also it seems you have move away from the acoustic in recent times. Not that it is a bad thing...just curious.
Just play the lick for a few bars as heard on the record, then slow it down to half speed for a few bars... THEN show those of your viewers who are novices specific picking techniques and which strings and frets the licks are played on. As a fairly accomplished Blues and Classic Rock guitarist who has dedicated tens of thousands of hours throughout the past 45 years diligently bettering my guitar chops (with great success and pride) I must advise you -- I rather quickly lost interest in your tutorial, good sir. Playing the licks at speed will, not only, pique the continued interest of more accomplished players, but inspire those less accomplished to practice harder. Don't baby your followers! Thanks for the hours you've dedicated to producing this lesson!
Not interested in these fancy schmancy things on guitar or in music period. Just play simple chords with little simple fill in licks like feel like makin love
