One Deep River, out now: markknopfler.lnk.to/odr
I closed my eyes and made a wish
Lord, don’t let me lose this fish
Scored myself a genuine squillionaire
I’m the drawing room boy with the pinky ring
I’m here to sell you anything
I’ve got a brand new friend
And we’re doing a good job there
Thought he’d come down to sniff around
In my old blood-stained hunting ground
Walked right in, I never should have stayed
He’s taking all my sage advice
So keep it shut, you’ll get your slice
We do him both ends twice and we both get paid
In Scavengers Yard where the wild things roam
Welcome - the bag man’s home
Come on down to where the tigers roar
In Scavengers Yard the wild things roam
Welcome - the bag man’s home
You’ll find me down on the killing floor
Now as someone I’d recommend
I bring you in, a dear old friend
Who knows just where there’s another shiny toy
It goes the way I want it to
There’s a major drink in this for you
Finder wins and seller too, old boy
He’s a greedy swine, he loves a steal
We tell him here’s one killer deal
I’ll hold his hand and a reaming there will be
I’ve let him know he’s number one
I’ve told him as a rule of thumb
I don’t trust anyone, not even me
Never had a sucker come on like this
He’s giving me arthritis
I feel like I have grown a set of claws
I’m not going to let this one slip
And I don’t intend to lose my grip
Now that I’ve got him in my jaws
In Scavengers Yard where the wild things roam
Welcome - the bag man’s home
Come on down to where the tigers roar
In Scavengers Yard the wild things roam
Welcome - the bag man’s home
You’ll find me down on the killing floor

This song made me think why Mark Knopfler and Slash haven't collaborated yet. There is no doubt that they would be super delicious together.❤️❤️

I thought the same. A guitar sound like Planet of New Orleans or Millionair Blues. Which i find pretty cool because that's a rock sound you never hear from "old" Knopfler anymore. I love it!

The style reminds me of Millionaire Blues, Single Handed Sailor and Sneakin Around by Chet Atkins/Jerry Reed. This track really surprised me and I've been listening to it a lot ever since the release. Really one of his best. Thank you Mark!

I’ve been listening to Mark since 1983, 13 years old, Dire Straits, Jean Michele Jarre, Gary Moore, The Shadows, Depeche Mode, Rainbow, Rush and Chris De Burgh were my first serious introduction to the world of music - then came Whitesnake, Def Leppard, Europe, AC/ DC, Hawkwind, Motörhead and Lemmy thanks to The Young One’s TV Ace of Spade’s - but it was aged 10 though I bought my first single - The Pistols & Friggin in the Riggin - mainly to embarrass the old man who was a Motorway Traffic Cop (or Bobby in his Jam Buttie Car or Range Rover) - then my next single was Emerson, Lake and Powell’s Touch and Go, things could have gone in literally any direction from there but it settled mainly into Rock, Metal, and Synths when Jan Hammer was scoring for Miami Vice - I learned classical guitar and Piano, then just before breaking into it professionally with local guys aged 19 I went and joined the Army - I didn’t tell them, and when I came home after 6 months for my first decent 14 day leave I was blamed for them “not making it, and I’d ruined their live’s 😂) we were absolutely sh1t. Then I’m suddenly 54, 7 kids, and a scientist and been playing keys on and off for 35 years, listening to Mark putting his life stories to music, wondering where all those songs were coming from, and *still* wondering - he’s got me through some good times, bad times, horrendous bloody times, but he just keeps on going, the music constantly flowing; like the Tyne itself, same old river, wide and deep, but fresh waters flowing on by each day since I don’t know when - I had The River Dee and The Mersey and no appreciation of the incredible period I was growing up in, but other than Mark and my mother, I can’t think of anything else that’s been there with me the whole way - all older, going grey, aging disgracefully, sounding like the old man whining on about becoming more and more Americanised - that was the word we had for Westernised in the 80’s. I wish we were born with enough wisdom to listen to all the advice about life passing in the blink of an eye and then your bone’s creak, your Dobber is like a wrinkly old sock, your knees and ankles ache from tabbing, shin splints which I got right up to my pelvis 😂 I was a celebrity at the Queen Elizabeth Military hospital in Aldershot, where my first son was born in 1992 - and now I rant and ramble like I’m 84, looking forward to late onset alcoholism and becoming a lecherous old pervert in a nursing home - maybe some decent speed if I can find any, or the ingredients and the inclination - thank you Mark, it’s been a blast old friend, I hope it continues for a few more years yet, I gotta feeling I’m due another dose of fubar from the May Queen - whatever the heck that is. 😉👍👋🫶🫡
