Mark Knopfler is quite simply an absolute genius - period. Nobody, but nobody, can make love to the guitar in the way that he does - his music will forever be his legacy.
Gets me in the feels every time. "I've run every red light on memory lane, seen desperation explode into flames and I don't wanna see it again..." Story of my life. Favorite lyric ever written. This guy destroys me song by song.
Just pure GENIUS! Sadly we live in a society of wannabees, but for those of us who were born at the right time we have the Best Musicians ever! If you are my age 64 then THANK my God I can listen to this and all the Great Musicians of this era! GENIUS
Some of Dire Straits music wasn't commercially successful because it didn't fit into radio's and many people's 3 minute attention span. Thank you Mark / Dire Straits for listening to the beat of your own drums.
I remember exactly when I first heard Dire Straits. I was 15 years old (early summer 1978), and I went into Kithaeron, my local music shop in St Albans, Hertfordshire, UK. I got on well with the proprietor, Dave, and he said, "You need to listen to this." "This" was the first album, _Dire Straits_ and from the first electrifying song, "Down to the Waterline", I was hooked. I'd never heard anything like it. Then, Dave said, "They're playing next week at the City Hall." It was a five minute walk from Kithaeron, so I was there in a minute, blowing my paper round money on a ticket. Wow. That's all I can say. I've never forgotten it. It was that that got me into playing guitar. I love metal, but good bands are good bands, so I don't just listen to metal. Dire Straits is all about sheer talent. Of all the bands I've ever seen, Straits played live more differently and inventively, and Mark Knopfler always seemed to find a new twist. Amazing.
9:00 - The lights dim, the quiet melancholy part is over, the piano strikes those sombre notes, Knopfler sings the final line "Down the Telegraph road ..." and the gradual build-up begins to the best part of the song, the final gallop if you will. Sends chills down my spine every time I hear it.
This recording is a high quality gem! I listen often on my nice audio setup. Another masterpiece from Mark Knopfler! His live performances take amazing songs to another level!
Quite possible the greatest guitarist of all time. Quite possibly the most distinctive and most recognisable. Amazing. His sense of melody is phenomenal.
Truely one of the Guitar Gods just visiting from the Musical Heavens! Thanks for stopping by our planet Mr. Knopfler. I hope you'll be no worse for the wear.
I`ve always said that Lyndsey Buckingham absolutely rapes his guitar but Mark Knoppler makes love to his !!! both end up with a similar result but it depends on your mood at the time!! i would go for Marks 6 out of 7 days!!!
nik rothe That's it! I would add a third one? although never considered as a "great guitarist", he is one for me: R Hodgson. Listen the solo at the end of "waiting so long".. for me one of (if not THE) best guitar solo of all times.. (not that technical but emotional..)
The fact that he comes up with different versions of this masterpiece at live shows is incredible, all have some of the building blocks but each different to the record
OH WOW!! If this does not send a shiver down your spine then you are not of this world! First time I have seen this version! oh my God! Just as good as it Gets! WOW
Oh wow....ye old National guitar...resonating in the hands of a star....Knopfler gave rock and roll CLASS...few artist progressed writing from a youthful stage to a masterful self-actualization...a performance MASTER...still entering our minds through our ears...and delivering a neural enlightenment sans the drugs of other artists...
Calle Söderberg. 1986 Darwin OZ, in midst a huge tropical storm Dire Straits live rain pouring down sheet lightening, 2=3" mud underfoot. Amazing rocking music. Lovely memories, tks D. Straits.
Mark Knopfler is a god on guitar as always , just gotta love him playing guitar not much moves unless his fingers on the guitar... not even his lips moves when he sings or play hard tunes on the guitar and he always been like that... guitar genuis for sure!!
Perfection. If god wants to learn the guitar he knows who to ask! Stunning!! It just doesn’t get any better than this song, this band and this singer, songwriter and guitarist.
NOBODY, has ever been able to "borrow" his sound and style and pull it off. One of the very few that after 2 notes, you KNOW who it is. He pulls sounds and harmonics from the guitar that are other-worldly, and yet are universal. Then throw in his song writing/lyrics that span the whole range of emotions, and genres....and what we have been gifted to hear for 34 years is a musical force that will never come around again. AND, he's a good man...modest, and respects his craft and fans! Lucky us!
Dear Mr. Knopfler, your music has brought much joy to my life for the last 25 years, since I was 7 or so. I love you and thank you for that. I wish there be a lot of health and hapiness for you and your beloved ones. TedBoy from Brazil.
incredible how a volume pedal can change anything :) I’m still amazed that many guitarists get a rack of pedals and cannot achieve what MK does with just one :) Don’t get me wrong, I love some of these guys and their playing as well, but yeah, there’s something special about Mark’s playing
I love everything about this track - the storytelling, the melody, the changes in feel and tempo, and the guitar playing is sublime. I never tire of hearing this.
Pure understated Skill, Awesome musician and man, So humble yet a true great! Fantastic, yet 29 people fail to realise what an incredible display they have witnessed....... I pity their loss.... Suckers!!
Mark your music accompany me in many moments of joy, moments of solitude, moments of pain, your music was a fortress, a castle that protected me many times. For 40 years, today ... life is ticking, I'm blessed by God, He gave me a blessed life .... and your music still sounds ... like yesterday ..... as always God ...... talent in your hands and fire in the soul. From Buenos Aires, Argentina, I'm Claudio Grecco
I talked to someone who knew about Knopfler him when he was younger. Apparently he just used to roll out of bed, with a cup of coffee and play the guitar for hours upon hours without getting dressed/washed apparently. Guitar genius like this don't just happen by chance.
No, they certainly do not! His talent came to him straight from his Maker and Creator, before there was ever one guitar lick in his mind or in his fingers. "Before I formed your inward parts, before you were skillfully wrought in the depths of the earth, I created you in secret; as I looked on your unformed substance, they were all written in My book, and the days that were ordained for you, when as yet there was not one of them. I did weave you in your mother's womb; you are fearfully and wonderfully made. How precious also are My thoughts to you! How vast is the sum of them! If you could count them, they would outnumber the sand. I have enclosed you behind and before, and laid My hand upon you; you can not flee My Presence for where you go, there am I." From Psalm 139 (not necessarily in the God-breathed order. My memory ain't what it used to be; so you get the point. Feel free to read it for your own self for it also applies to you 😊.)
A long time ago came a man on a track walking thirteen miles with a GUITAR on his back, and he put down HIS SONGS where he though was the best , RECORDED A LP for the wilderness... THANKS MARK ,, All the way
Uno de los mejores temas de la historia del Rock -- One of the best song of Rock´s history. Incredible song I thik this is the best version that Mark has done. Thank you very much forshare this !!
The term musician just doesn't seem to cover it here. Not that I can come up with a term that does. Every song, every note is a masterpiece. It's like he takes you on a journey, explains to you what he wants you to know, and then gently places you right back where you were. Except you're a better person for the experience. All I can say is thank you.
***** MARK WOULD NOT WANT YOU TO DO THAT FOR ANYONE!!! YOU START ASKING JESUS TO COME INTO YOUR HEART AND YOU WILL NEVER FEEL WORTHLESS AGAIN!! READ YOUR BIBLE AND PRAY EVERYDAY!!
"Telegraph Road" was written by Knopfler while on a tour bus on Telegraph Road "Downriver" in Michigan in the late 1970's. It reminds me alot of Gordon Lightfoot's "Canadian Railroad Trilogy".
tee cee wow ! what an incredible connection of concepts you have made... Canadian Railroad Trilogy & Telegraph Road... Great, accurate, spot on .. Thanks for sharing that thought!
Mark is a storyteller...he can make simple stories be seen from a tottaly different perspective and take us on a journey...a journeu full of wonders and joy in this crazy world of ours...and his guitar has this pure feeling that can make a crappy day feel better at every note he plays...and he is a modest man,a ''slow learner'' as he says...he is the reason i've started to play the guitar and my favorite musician ever...people sy they cried when ekvis dies,i will definitely cry whwn mark does...
This used to be my most fav song..some 20 yrs back would play this song evry morning..as soon as I woke up...& just imagine & visualize the melodic, lyrical & emotional story telling of Mark Knopfler.. One of the most interesting things & love about MK ..is that almost everytime he plays any given song..he improvises..with the lyrics, phrasing.. melody..guitar melody & even his solos..every time its different..Love Ya Mark..
