FHIR Shorthand (FSH) is a friendly language for defining the content of IGs, and more recently, FHIR resources. Making simple declarative statements, you can define a wide variety of FHIR artifacts such as profiles, extensions, and value sets. With the addition of a bit of markdown, you can define essentially everything you need for a complete IG or resource page in the FHIR specification. FSH is a HL7 mixed normative / trial use standard (pending publication as of January 2022) and is currently used in over 200 IG projects worldwide.
If you need to build a FHIR IG, or if you are in an HL7 work group responsible for creating and maintaining FHIR resources, you should learn about FSH. Fortunately, as a purpose-designed language, FSH is concise, readable, and quick to learn. In this tutorial, we introduce the basic concepts of FSH, learn some basic FSH language, and explore some of the tools in the tackle box for creating an IG. .
