I've never heard bad music by Mark Lanegan. At a yard sale, I was lucky enough to buy a second-hand copy of his duet album with Isobel Campbell, Ballad of the Broken Seas . . . not one stinker. Mark reminds me of Iggy Pop in so many ways. Both have gravelly, earthy, road-weary voices that are melodic and real all at once. And both are storytellers that you can't really categorize or pigeonhole. They are the opposite of the dreck that's hoisted by Apple or Spotify.
Quite simply, my favourite audiobook. I have 400 in my library but this is the only one I’ve listened to 3 times. I love his voice, his honesty and the fact he’s talking about 2 of my music heroes. So glad to hear a warts and all take on that time
I thought the exact same thing after listening to sing backwards. Wish he would have had more time to write more books and narrate. It's also amazing he was able to remember stuff so well despite being on heavy stuff. I had some rough years too but I can't remember shit
I was devastated the day Chris passed away, I still am. And yet it is so beautiful when two people manage to talk about someone who is gone, recalling memories that make them smile, or actually chuckle. so heartwarming
💯💯 it makes my heart happy to see him finally getting some recognition... better late than never. So many of Seattle's deepest secrets exist deep in that man's memories........
“Down to the water Drawn to the flame This life will leave you crippled Don’t you know the game?” Slip Away My favorite Mad Season song, (Which is saying a lot because it’s sung by Mark, whereas Layne is my favorite singer) So heavy and good. The guitars near the end bleed and cry…you can FEEL it
"This life is a monster, Dont you know its name? " Layne is my personal favorite but Mark Lanegan can sometimes convey the same degree of emotional power in his singing, technical ability aside. Also, I smoke cigarettes so I can identify lol. To understand the point , listen to " down in a hole" and then " first day of winter". Kudos to Josef Arthur for pointing out this fact to mark, though he didn't seem to believe, or even understand it.. he legitamately didn't seem to get how great he was, which is kind of beautiful. What a legend. RIP
Layne is my favorite too and Mad Season is one of my favorite records ever made. Mark did a great job on those songs on the rerelease, Slip away is a great song. I'm not a big PJ fan, after the 1st 2 records, I kinda lost interest in them. I really like McCready though, Mad Season, Temple of The Dog and Walking Papers are all great records.
Yeah, Layne has been my favorite since the night I watched them open up for Van Halen - bought dirt the next day and searched and waited for everything else AÍC and Layne from that day forward. Mad Season I think takes thé cake for me, can't imagine how many incredible songs they would have had if only Layne hadn't gone that way.. Still breaks my heart, but I gotta listen to the rerelease and hear Mark's singing along with the rest of the band-- loved McCready from the first time I heard Alive when it first came out - immediately heard the Hendrix influence which being a Lefty guitarist of course he's been a favorite since I can remember..
Layne looks so vulnerable in that thumbnail. I know it’s a photo still but compared to the other guys/.. whom I love all of. Rest In Peace all four of you ❤️❤️💕💕
Mark is an underrated writer and singer. That guy has a great voice, snd a poetic mind. Heard "Black Book of Fear " on Mad Season deluxe, Jesus..... beautiful
Mark Lanegan was in Poland in Festiwal Ars Cameralis 2012 and I was at this concert. Then I also bought a CD Blues Funeral placed in a cover with colorful flowers (mallows popular in my country). He was serious, focused and taciturn, and the concert was fascinating. Then I saw him on the Anthony Bourdain show, where he feasted, talked and was very communicative. Two images and the same man. I miss him so much.
6:25 exactly That’s an artist. That’s a metalhead. That’s a vulnerable creative person. We’re/they’re all overlooked and assumptions are made. But the outcasts and music makers are needed! They “force you to think in a different way”!!!! ❤️💕👍🏻🙏🏾🙏🏾
Screaming Trees and Lanegan are legends I’m glad you got to post this cus they are great I hope you can post more trees stuff soon Also most importantly RIP Chris Layne and Kurt
Sometimes it seems people think it was hair metal till Nirvana broke, but the alt scene was already underway, I remember listening to Jane's Addiction, The Pixies, Danzig, Faith No More, Soundgarden and outsider metal like Voivoid and King Diamond, the move away from the excess and cheese of hair metal was already happening Nirvana just put the final nail in the coffin
Was unaware of the history..i'd heard marks work with QOTSA and always thought damn that dude is unique with a great voice...I know need to go back over all his catalog...RIP
Do u have no family or friends ? :-( I miss these singers too but they weren’t my friends. I understand the sentiment. But I hope u have people who are dear to u in this life.
God's balls by Tad is one of my favourite albums by anyone. I can't fathom why they're so underrated. The whole album is on RU-vid. Listen and tell me I'm wrong.
I won't say "you're wrong", as music is subjective, but they don't have much pop radio appeal, meaning they were destined to never sell any records. Tad can't sing a lick, unfortunately. I personally like his voice and many do, but not the masses. Their music isn't melodic, either. It's heavy and badass (I think), but doesn't have the replay value of something melodic. They have some melodic tracks, and I love those ones. Decent singing and good melodies are vital for mass appeal, and they had neither. I have all Tad's albums, mind you. Tad also wasn't the handsome dude that Kurt, Lanegan, Cornell and Staley were, which is yet another thing important for mass appeal (fuckin dumb but that's life). Tad alsoade stuuuupid choices and fucked their momentum all to hell. The "Pepsi" cover fucked them, as did the other cover of the stoners they found at Goodwill for 8-Way Santa. Both covers were stupid anyway and very small-timey looking. Anyway, long live Tad, love them, but they're no Soundgarden or Alice or Nirvana. Not by a long shot (not that they tried to be).
When I first heard jinx...and wood goblins..tad didn't need to do much more for me...wicked band.... love the guitar tones. They came up with ..never saw them live...but can imagine tad n nirvana together on tour was one hell of a night
@@VanishedPNW I like them all too. And they are all different. Nirvana is so catchy, Soundgarden is more like prog, AIC has those dreamy stoner harmonies, TAD is like listening to a live band and standing at the front. I am glad to have them all :)
That would have been insane, i while back I remember seeing some passages from Kurt’s journals stating how he loved the albums dirt and facelift, I was never able to find the photos again though.
@@boneappletea3858 it wasn’t from anything that was ever released to the public.. I’m not sure why they were taken down though. When I saw it I was surprised. I’ll dig around and see if I can find it again.
Feels like every three minutes in this video there erupts a volley of almost semi menical laughter like Die Hard or something; Guys sitting around laughing one dude about to get blasted
A great way to describe ethos for coming up in that time... everyone had to be too cool for school..disengaged..resigned..dissonant.. in the end you just ended up missing out on a lot of stuff.. because you thought you were being pretentious.. very conscious not to do anything that would run counter to the cool guy Charter that you would have written for yourself as a cool person in the 90s.
Imagine if he was the second guitarist in nirvana how much better if even possible could they have been also with the respect he and kurt had for each other maybe he would have been able to help kurt with all the other stuff game brought
3:02 love mark. But it’s so annoying when people pronounce it mis-CHEEEEE-VEEEE-iss “ . When the word is mischievous. Slowly sound it out “MIS-chiv-iss” No EEEEEE sound or letter after the v Nothing against mark. . 99% of people say it wrong and it just really bugs me. Sorry
Lanegan - turned on later Staley - grew as time passed Cobain - in the whole time Cornell - realized his contributions and admiration was present All of them - a little crazy but they entertain to the hilt - you almost want to make a judgement before gaining more insight - they are a brand that rose and took everyone along for a ride
ALL THESE DUGGIES AMUSE AND DEIFY THEMSELVES IN SUCH AN INBRED MANNER, IT'S HYSTERICAL. POOR WRETCHED ONES...THEY'RE SUCH GENIUSES BUT THEY CAN'T HELP BUT TO DESTROY THEMSELVES. RIGHT...REAL GENIUS...
