DUDE! My fave episode yet. I"m a Hard Rock and Metal guy, progressive in the mix. Old and new schools both. This episode struck me the most though. I was not aware how much swing and groove was already in my playing. This made it fairly obvious. Thanks @Martin Miller and @Mark Lettieri for enlightening about myself :P

So much patience and respect from Martin here. Mark didn't want to 'teach' Martin or to patronise him in any way BUT... Martin was trying to slow him down so us mere mortals could follow. Martin waited for a gap and then slipped it in where he could. Great interview technique Martin, well done. Mark, your playing is emotional even when you're doodling!

Lettieri is very clinical in his playing, very precise. I myself find players with a bit more swing to be more groovy. I personally think John Mayer is the grooviest guitarist of our time.

@@caliathleticfitness5602 I don't know if this makes sense as English is not my native language, but I make a difference between "timing" and "groove" where groove is more about rhythm playing and the picking hand plays the main role. I admire John Mayer very much and think he has great timing, but I have not heard him play rhythm grooves like Mark L and Paul J. I don't doubt Mr Mayers ability, I just haven't heard him do that groove thing.

Awesome stuff!...it's great to analyze and break things down this way as sometimes we tend to do things on guitar as second nature but our learning of "why" and "how" we do things increases as we dig further into our playing. I really enjoyed this, made me think about my own rhythmic guitar playing and added some extra ideas to keep adding spice to my chops. I also like the respect you two show for each other as musicians...it's always good to have that kind of relationship and camaraderie without feeling like it's a competiton of who's better or who knows more...just playing and sharing ideas and growing together...it's what music is all about... Thanks to both of you for this video!

Appreciate alot that you are open to other guitarists approaches at your level, and not let the ego dictate instead. Even if it's a tenth percent of someones concept you take with you in your "backpack" that's valuable. And you are probably very aware of that too Martin, otherwise you wouldn't take these lessons.

It's all about the time. Like a drum fill or pattern. You can tell the difference between a drummer who's trying to cram some chop they learned into a space vs. someone who's listening to the clock in their head and playing to land on the one. Let the ghost notes and such fall where they fit to keep it in time.

This was amazing! Thanks for setting this up! I feel like there are a lot of lead guitar lessons out there but very few on intermediate/advanced rhythm guitar like this one..very very cool! I'd love to see more rhythm lessons if you feel like making more!

Thanks Martin for this excurse, Mark is one of my most favourite guitarist and I enjoyed very much. Its quiet interesting how individual is the tone of everyone playing finger style, especially seeing/hearing this at you both guys with such a high technical level.

Martin ! Great subject matter ! Very cool to see that rhythmic evolution behind mark’s leads, especially seeing his performance with easy lover, definitely helps explain the origin and perhaps the roots from his rhythms, especially the percussive nature of his playing….. so cool, love to see more from you guys together, like fire and ice!

Feel maybe Martin needs to compress his sound a little more for this type of playing, it sounds like his bottom and top ends are a little loose. Great lesson, keep coming back to this one

That looping part at 33:13 ... man, that boogies! Thanks for the awesome lesson! Two guitar wizards come together, too cool! I'm trying to follow the theory comments, but it's hard! For ex. in the part at around 30:00 I don't see it as D/F with an added 9, why can't it be simply Fmaj7? I think Martin you even explain it as 5-1-3-7 (as in intervals). Anyway I thoroughly enjoyed the lesson! Greetings from Austria!

How did you achieve the zero delay during transmission that made you able to play together?

There are several jam platforms like jamulus, jamkazam, sonobus where you can play together with a pretty low latency. I live in Germany and play almost every day with people all over the world. Playing with musicians in the U.S. works better, if they are located at the east coast. West coast or South American countries usually doesn´t work but in case of a fast fiber connection it might work.

it's to achieve perfect tuning. guitar frets are inherently not in tune. if you tune the open strings to be perfectly in tune then certain notes along the frets won't. so they do these compensated frets to be more in tune. some people like it some don't. it just doesn't sound like the guitar timbre your ears are accustomed to. the chords ring out almost like a keyboard
