The video includes numerous violin/fiddle performances by Mark O'Connor throughout.
Mark O'Connor authored the groundbreaking O'Connor Method of American classics and released the first two books in 2009. Since then, the method books have become the fastest-growing violin method with tens of thousands of children learning to play violin, viola, cello and bass from the series around the world. A companion set of books for string orchestra in schools, adds to its importance, power and results. Mr. O'Connor regularly conducts 10-hour Teacher-Training seminars to certify teachers in his O'Connor Method. This 60-minute video represents a unique overview of his history-making work in violin and string pedagogy, introducing and formalizing for the first time "A New American School of String Playing". This is a must-see video for all serious string teachers as the work O'Connor has accomplished, and the information shared here is comprehensive, and in fact revolutionary for music education.
"The reason why I felt like I had to take ten or more years out of my successful performing, recording and composing career in order to author this violin method, is because of what I saw first-hand with my beloved instrument. In traveling around the country giving masterclasses and workshops, as well as hosting my own string camps, I saw that the violin as we once knew it, was dying out - no more violin-playing composers, arrangers, improvisers and ensemble leaders (like Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Paganini, Dvorak, Kreisler...) let alone classical violin players with any original ideas in music...with the attrition rate of taking 3 and 4 years of violin, and even the attrition rate of Julliard string grads, it was going downhill fast. I often ask string teachers today, who is the newest violin star they know of, and the answer is always someone from at least 20 or 25 years ago!
I found it shocking that there was no more creativity in violin-playing circles anymore. There has never been an American School formalized, and it's about time there is one. From violin studios all the way to music conservatories, continuing to ignore the important cultural diversity of American string playing, it continues to be shameful in my opinion - the complete ignoring of this great music and culture. My materials go to turning things around for the better. Western Classical music, which is in trouble from every angle one can see now, could seriously benefit from a rising "School" of American string playing because like everything in America, it is inclusive of Europe, yes, but it's also inclusive of Africa, and the Middle East, South America, Mexico and Asia... Diversity is the right message for students today.
The last thing leaders and teachers of music should be doing today in America or anywhere for that matter, is continuing the 'whites-only club', repeating music of dead white composers exclusively for children as the only music somehow worthy enough to learn. The diversity of America is the bright light we want to inspire students with and the American Violin' has been around for 400 years not only inhabiting the music, but in fact instrumental in creating the blues, Spirituals, hoedowns and ragtime, all foundations of American music. Music teachers should be leading on this, and now is the time to do so. The O'Connor Method features a lot of African American music, Hispanic music, Native American music as well as European, basically representing all of the world's culture in order to make up American string playing. Students want to be able to play in tune, in time, read music, play by ear... but they also want to be creative, and learn how to improvise and write music as well as be in bands or ensembles of most any kind. I can help teachers find those lightbulb moments with their students with the amazing materials and lessons plans from the O'Connor Method." -Mark O'Connor (2018)
