I'm standing here just staring at my instruments. They're made of wood, they have strings. I spend long hours trying to master them.. I can make music. Mark crawls right inside of theses instruments and becomes the music. I think I understand how Salieri felt! Here again is a gift from God.

I've played bluegrass fiddle all my life; started at 5. Mark was always a hero of mine, so much talent and drive. I wish I sounded half that good.

It's a shame we're no longer acquainted with the steam locomotives this song was written to evoke, once a daily feature of American life. You can just picture the Special headed down the track at 90 mph, the running gear a blur. The musicianship here just melted my face.

I am just gonna say it okay... This guy (Mark) is in a another stratosphere. I'm just saying that he plays notes with an ease that seems unnatural. Seriously... he is just crazy good. He seems to have ice water in his veins, and plays these seamless runs with a cool little grin on his face that makes it look like he is just about to fall asleep! Truly one of the very best musicians that we will ever see on this planet. That's just how I feel, so there you have it. Thank you for the post!

@@deansurratt7936 Ervin Rouse is the writer of Orange Blossom Special, not Erin Rouse. Spelled Ervin wrong...mistake. Chubby wise helped put the song on the map, but he sure didn't write it. He told that lie for years & years. Ervin Rouse is the only name on the copyright.

Man that Was Incredible Mark ! !I 've heard all versions,including the one rare Silver Creek version,now on here finally with Doug Atwell playing the viola using an echo in Orange Blossom and Pizzicato also a mesmerizing song..That used to be my favorite before this.And I' not sure if even Darrell Mansfield's Harp skills could've kept up with Terry's.Superbly done! I remember listening to my Daddy's oldest brother playing this on his homemade fiddle back in the forties. Brings back special memories. My uncle wasn't as good as you, Mark, but we all loved to hear him play. He had a recording system to put the performances on record. I don't know if any exist today. Thanks for posting this. Yes, this IS "Orange Blossom Special" at its best!

This is awesome (O'Connor is ALWAYS awesome) and I love the way he quoted other pieces throughout. Nevertheless my favorite "Orange Blossom Special" performance was by Sweet Mary Hattersley at a Greezy Wheels gig.

For you purists...it's called IMPROV! lol... Flintstones, Bach...made me laugh out loud! Great stuff. I mean, really...this is Orange Blossom, not Beethoven's violin concerto. As a classically trained violinist...for me this was just fun fun fun.

+houndzark I don't know about the Flintstones, but there's actually a little bit from Bach's E Major Partita for Solo Violin (Prelude), from around 1:30 to 1:46. That doesn't prevent the entire thing from being improvisation, including "stolen" bits here and there...

It's not improvised. Mark is an incredibly good improviser but he plays this exactly the same way as on the studio recording. Having said that, it's an unbelievable version!

At one time it was an improvisation, or a few of them. Now it is an impresarios' version.

@@brianpatterson7332 He means improve from the standard way of playing it by throwing Flintstones and Bach in there. When I worked at summer camp back in 1991, we had a 'rodeo' and I was one of the announcers and this was what I played over the speakers for the horse race. :)

When somebody is SO GOOD that it defies human comprehension. That is Mark O’connor. and I don’t agree that it is too fast there is also entertainment value in someone who can play that fast it makes it just that much more amazing it’s like Coltrane playing a slow song but trying to cram as many notes into it as he could.

This fastest fiddle tune was named for the Orange Blossom Special, the fastest train on the Seaboard Line. It always came through Columbia SC, my hometown. It was on its way to Florida to the Orange Blossoms down there. The piece was written by Fiddler Chubby Wise, who played with Bill Monroe.

This song was not written by Chubby Wise! It was written by Ervin Rouse! Wise helped put it on the map, along with Bill Monroe, but Ervin Rouse penned it! The copyright has Ervin Rouse's name on it...NOT Chubby Wise!
