You can give ANYONE all the peds in the world and and noone will come even close to the totals ed put up @ 220 and 198. On top of that he walked out squats and the gear he was using was basically what would be considered raw today. Roids arent magic. Yes without them he would not have gotten as strong as he did, the body can't get that strong naturally, but that doesnt discount anything. Do you disregard the physiques bodybuilders have? At the highest levels of bbing/pling drugs are REQUIRED.

10000% true. I get so sick of ignorant people always thinking and saying something along the lines of “oh well sure he squatted 4x and benched 3x his BW but if I took steroids I would be able to do that too”. Meanwhile these people have been lifting the same weight for 5 years with no signs of progressing whatsoever and it’s due to some combination of poor training plan/program, poor work ethic/discipline, poor nutrition, or poor recovery protocols. Sure if this person took steroids it’s likely that the drugs would help whatever areas this person was deficient in and they would progress. Here the drugs are being used to compensate for lack of other things in the strength and muscle building process, so improvement will be seen. However, without optimizing every facet of training, nutrition, and recovery, while not being coupled with great genetics, then steroids will allow improvement but never will they make someone average into someone extraordinary. All of the pieces must be present in the right ratios to make someone as impressive as Ed Coan.

The only argument I have is against the "nobody will ever come close to what Ed Coan did" mentality. Raw lifting is gaining popularity again (thank god), and it seems like on a daily basis you have more and more guys lifting unbelievable numbers and they aren't even in their prime. Look at Eric Lilliebridge, he is only 23 year old, competes 275, and is Raw, and just totaled 2,353. He has another 10-20 years to do even MORE. Ed's buddy says "nobody will come within a country mile of Ed's 900 deadlift at 220". Well, there is a Russian guy who pulled 861 @ 198 raw. I would say before his career is over he could definitely pull 900+, and that is at 198 vs Ed's 220. No disrespect to Ed, I have met him more than once, seen him at competitions, talked to him, etc. Another lifter I know if great friends with him. He is a legend in the sport, he is a great guy, and unbelievably kind and humble. However, it is just wrong to suggest that "nobody" will EVER come close to what he did. I mean, some of his records have already been beat.
@Grottman96

Could be a equipment matter. shirts, wraps and belt usage has seen some advancements and alterations in rules.
@SkylerKingTW
@SkylerKingTW 10 лет назад
I don't understand? I am not comparing equipped lifting to Ed's numbers, I am comparing modern RAW numbers to his hold numbers (most of which weren't truly "raw", as he was using the original versions of squat suits, bench shirts, etc)
@Grottman96
@Grottman96 10 лет назад
Punchy317 Well If I understand correctly RAW In the Coan, Marty and Kaworski days was just a belt. The end. Now we have more equipment being used, RAW and otherwise, and the equipment is alot better than anything the Iron Giants ever used. They discuss this in the video and marty express the same thing in his book : The purposeful primitive. One comparison. Bench shirts. Iron Giant days it ads 40 pounds. In our day and age up to 40 percent (sounds alot to me but that's the quote).
@Jimmy-up2xk
@Jimmy-up2xk 10 лет назад
he pulled that 861 in a deadlift only meet, ed did the 901 after squatting and benching. thats a pretty massive difference. also saying "he could pull 901 at 198" is completely a shot in the dark. he may need to gain so much muscle to pull that that it puts him out of the 198 class. re eric lilliebridge, theres a good chance the way wraps are now, he gets the same as ed did out of wraps and a suit. so if he can total more than 2426 or whatever it was, at 220, in wraps, then hes better. if not, ed is still better. if belyaev outpulls him, but coan still totals more, ed is still better.

Great interview, I for one think geared powerlifting only makes powerlifting foggy and numbers tough to relate to. A perfect example is how it is difficult to compare an all time great like Ed to modern lifters. I feel like the only equipment that should be allowed are knee sleeves, belt and wrist wraps.

Outstanding video, However I would debate Marty on Ed's superiority over his sport in relation to other athletes in other sports. Gretzky in Hockey, John Brzenk in Arm Wrestling, Cael Sanderson in NCAA Wrestling were all in a different league in their sports, Maybe Kaz in early Strongman... But I believe Ed's all time total were acutely superior to Kaz's all time total, in terms of powerlifting. However from having competed in both the strength of one sport doesn't necessarily transfer into the other.

are they fuckin kidding me? this guy in the slippers must be fuckin ed coan because.... if you are telling me all ed coan did was do his routine, eat, and work hard, and he was able to deadlift almost 1000 lbs you are completely ignoring the fact that this man used PEDs and was suspended and eventually banned from the IPF. it would be INSANE to think that PEDs did not help him break records and the fact that he "worked hard" doesnt absolve him of that.
@musicum22
@musicum22 11 лет назад
i dont consider them elite athletes. my deal is these clowns giving PLing advice to people who may NOT be using PEDs. They give advice regarding routines, rep ranges or what have you, when they were using steroids. its completely dishonest and misleading to average person. And its dishonest for mark rippetoe to not even acknowledge this point. but he doesnt care, he gets paid in cash.

The "efficacy of a workout routine" is not being changed by steroids. The only difference when not using and using is the amount of time it takes to reach those results. Anyone who trains and knows anything about steroids should know that much. As far as it being a hushed topic, maybe it would be an ignored subject if the use of steroids was federal crime in the US.
@cscsontren5666

When I first meet Larry back in the mid 80s he was a super nice guy. I remember joining his gym in Dayton called Muscle World back in 1988. About 2 years later his attitude totally changed and we parted ways. I remember a good 5 plus years later he was allot smaller and had moved to another location and was again a pretty nice guy. Overall for most of the time I knew him he seemed to be a very nice guy. I new when he got pissed at me he was having allot of issues at the gym and his personal life. He had gotten into some hot water of steroids. I am not dogging him I still feel he is a pretty good man. Everyone has their ups and downs. Overall he was a much nicer guy than Jim Cash. I get along ok with Jim later on but back in the late 80s he was a total prick.

If there were no such thing as steroids. The numbers would be much lower but the work ethic is still as hard in theses elite lifters. Now, that there is steroids people do enhance their strength tremendously. The first time a person used steroids in competition with others that were natural is cheating. But, since now its the norm....steroids are required. Natural lifters should only be compared to other natural lifters, and vice versa with PED lifters.

Did you just call Ed Coan a clown? The guy is a single best powerlifter in the world EVER period. Now first of all lets gets something straight, if we remove steroids out of the equation completely and assume that everyone is exactly the same, the same people will be at the same place because of their dedication, genetics and hard work.
