This is one my favourite Mark Turner Solos, I transcribed it a few years ago.
If you like it give me a thumbs up ... I have a couple more lying around on my computer that I might upload at some point.
Wherever possible I've written the long altissimo lines an octave lower to make it easier to read.
Apologies for any mistakes.
I've had the pleasure of having a lesson with Mark I would advise it to anyone who can get hold of him....He has so much knowledge that will blow you away!!!

I'm not sure if I can think of a more creative saxophonist than Mark Turner, his solos always come from a place of intense focus.

This was a well constructed and very interesting solo, thanks for posting. He keeps it interesting by having phrases cross over the usual boundaries, motifs with short rhythms are introduced and varied, leading to the long eighth note phrases reminiscent of Warne Marsh wandering in and out of the changes.

I feel like its kinda jive, honestly. He plays the changes for one second maybe two or three times. Sounds like a lot of scales and out licks somewhat close to the changes. Even if thats what his intended approach was, it was still just noises. No story, no shape, just pure technique.

I don't mean to be rude, but I find your comment pretty baffling. To me it sounds (and looks) like sublime, creative and fresh voice-leading throughout the entire solo. Can you point to a phrase where he's supposedly playing 'outside'?

How did you listen/watch the first chorus and a half of this solo and conclude that there was "no shape"? He starts with long tones and builds up to sequenced phrases (he doesn't play an long eighth note line for a good solid minute - mostly just tightly organized simple ideas). And there are no "out licks" because Turner isn't playing "licks" period. Nothing is a typical "jazz pattern"; it's either long, irregularly sloping lines or concise, unexpected ideas that still follow the changes.

Why when we don't like some soloist we feel the necessity to put him down? To me, it sounds weird and I didn't get it but is obvious that this cat knows what his doing, specially if you follow the sheet while listening.
